TOM Heaton is targeting FA Cup success at last after Burnley were paired with Middlesbrough in the third round.

The 29-year-old has never been on the winning side in an FA Cup match in nine appearances in the famous old competition.

His first appearance came in a loan spell at Swindon Town in the early stages of the 2005/06 season, and after a 2-2 draw with Boston United at the County Ground he was sent-off 18 minutes into a replay that the Robins went on to lose 4-1.

That has set the tone for Clarets captain Heaton’s FA Cup adventures, with defeats to Southampton and Tottenham in a replay coming with Burnley.

Burnley were given a tough assignment at in-form Championship rivals Boro in Monday’s draw, with a league trip to the Riverside to come first on Tuesday.

“It’s a tough one,” Heaton said of the draw. “Middlesbrough have started the season well.

“We’ve got them next week so that will be a nice taster for it in the league.

“The cup game is a tough one but a great one to go and beat them there and progress.”

Heaton reached a Wembley League Cup final with Cardiff City in 2011/12, with the Bluebirds losing to Liverpool on penalties, but he has not had the same success in the FA Cup.

“I haven’t had too many good ones in the FA Cup,” he said. “I had the League Cup a couple of years ago which was brilliant, but I’m yet to do something special in the FA Cup so hopefully this year can be the one.”
