ANDRE Gray says he wants to be the player to break Clarets legend Willie Irvine’s 50-year goal record.

Burnley marked the anniversary of the former Northern Ireland striker’s achievements on Sunday, the day that leading Championship scorer Gray took his overall tally for the season to 11 goals.

All of them have come in the Championship - with two of them for former club Brentford - leaving Gray on course to break through the 29-goal barrier that has never been breached since Irvine set the post-war benchmark in the 1965/66 season.

The club’s record signing says he was not aware of the record until Sunday, but has now set his sights on beating it.

However, he admits the ultimate aim is to win a place in the Premier League.

“It was the first I heard about the record, but hopefully I can break it,” said the 24-year-old.

“I don’t really set a target but obviously I want to score in every game. Hopefully I can keep the momentum going. But the main thing is that we get promoted. Fingers crossed.

“The main thing is for the club to stay at the top. I could stay on this amount of goals for the rest of the season but as long as we get promoted then that’s all that matters.”

Gray’s fourth minute penalty on Sunday earned the Clarets a point after Bobby Zamora gave Brighton the lead inside the first minute.

“I’m not really a penalty taker but I seem to be now,” said the striker.

“It’s just a case of making your mind up on where you want to go and hoping that the keeper doesn’t save it.

“It was good to get us back in the game and obviously get us that point in the end.

“We knew they’d come out quickly so it was disappointing when they got the goal early on.

“We managed to get back in it though and it’s a good point. We could’ve nicked it at the end but we weren’t at our best so it’s probably a fair result.

“We came out in the second half on the front foot but we weren’t able to nick it.

“They’re obviously up there for a reason so we knew it was going to be a tough game and it was always going to be close.

“They’re organised, solid, they’re hard to break down and they keep the ball well so there’s no doubt that they’ll be up there this season. I’m sure we’ll be up there with them too. There’s a long way to go, we’re not even halfway through the season yet, so we just need to stay in the mix.”
