JOSH Ginnelly struck a late winner for Burnley as the Clarets Under-21s moved to top spot in Group A of the Final Third Development League Cup.

The 1-0 win over Morecambe means the Clarets have seven points from a possible nine and top the four-team group, although they will need to stay there with only the group winner qualifying for the semi-finals.

Senior squad members Dean Marney and Kevin Long both came through another 90 minutes on the road to recovery from serious injury in the match at Gawthorpe, while Matt Lowton also played the full game.

Coach Michael Jolley said: “It was a tough game. We had to be really patient, but we wanted to get the win and we succeeded in doing that.

“Morecambe made the game tough because they camped in, got a lot of men behind the ball and we had to be really patient to get the goal, but we got there in end and I thought we deserved the win.

“Having a settled back four helps and I thought young (goalkeeper) Tony Aghayere did well coming in. Although he didn’t have a lot to do, he did well with his distribution so defensively you always want to get a clean sheet and we did that.

“We want to win games and lately we have had a couple of games where results have gone against us, but the performances have been good and today we have got back to winning ways, which is pleasing.”

Burnley have finished their group games but will be pipped to top spot if Fleetwood win their final game against Bradford.
