BURNLEY striker Sam Vokes yesterday withdrew from the Wales squad ahead of tomorrow’s friendly against the Netherlands.

The 26-year-old missed Tuesday’s training session with Chris Coleman’s men after receiving treatment at Gawthorpe for the groin injury which forced his early exit in the goalless draw at former club Wolves on Saturday.

Vokes did go on to meet up with Wales, and it was initially hoped he would be fit for the game at Cardiff City Stadium tomorrow night.

But it was revealed he had withdrawn from the squad to return to the Clarets, adding to Wales’ woes up front for their first Euro 2016 warm-up match, with fellow forwards Gareth Bale and Hal Robson-Kanu also absent, as well as midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Vokes’ injury is not thought to be serious enough to rule him out of Burnley’s next Championship game, at home to Brighton on Sunday, November 22.

Having battled back from a cruciate knee ligament injury that cut short the Clarets’ promotion winning season and proved a frustration in their Premier League campaign after making his comeback on Boxing Day, the striker was in and out of the line-up for the first couple of months this season.

He cemented his place, and partnership with record signing Andre Gray, in the 2-1 win at Bristol City in late August.

Since the goalless draw at Derby County on September 21 Vokes had not missed a minute for Burnley in eight games, until suffering a second half knock at Wolves.

The Wales international, who has scored three times for the Clarets, went off in the 65th minute at Molineux, replaced by summer signing Rouwen Hennings.

Meanwhile, Red Dragons defender Ben Davies believes they can cope without key men Bale and Ramsey and prove they aren’t a two-man team.

“We’ve lost two very good players but we’re confident that everyone in this squad is there for a reason,” he said.

Midfielder Ramsey missed the game at Cardiff City Stadium after suffering a hamstring injury in Arsenal’s Champions League win over Bayern Munich on October 20.
