NTUMBA Massanka was at the double to ensure Burnley Under-21s progressed to qualifying round two in the U21 Premier League Cup at Turf Moor tonight.

The 18-year-old showed terrific composure after latching onto Fredrik Ulvestad’s throughball to round the keeper and steady himself before firing through the defenders on the line for his first just after the half-hour.

He had to be patient for his second. After being denied just before the hour by Adam Anson on the line, he finished well in the 68th minute after good work Jamie Frost and Renny Smith in the build-up.

Tom Anderson completed the scoreline with a firm header reminiscent of Michael Keane from Brad Jackson’s corner with just over 10 minutes to go.

Burnley, who fielded Ulvestad and Kevin Long as two of the three permitted over-age players, were comfortable for the most part, and the extra goal reflected that in the second half.

Massanka was involved early on as a terrific run set up a chance for Ulvestad, who forced the keeper into a good save in the second minute.

Soon after, Daniel Agyei’s knock down from a corner led to a header for Long, but the defender couldn’t steer it on target.

Wigan - who had former Claret Chris Eagles in the line-up as he tries to secure a contract on trial, and Grant Holt on his comeback from a cruciate knee ligament injury - had their opportunities limited by an organised Burnley.

Holt’s header from a right wing cross took a deflection off Luke Hendrie, who was defending the situation well.

The Clarets started the second half brightly, with Cameron Dummigan doing well to keep the ball in on the left as he skipped over a challenge and cut inside. Spotting the keeper off his line he opted for a shot from distance, but couldn’t get the better of Owen Evans.

Agyeii then had a shot from distance after good work by Aiden O’Neill to win the ball back, before Massanka’s effort from Frost’s delivery was stopped on the line.

Agyei went off with a back injury in the 53rd minute, replaced by Renny Smith who, after Anderson had thwarted Louis Robles at one end, helped Massanka with his second at the other, sending Frost’s ball into the striker’s path to finish well - taking his recent tally to seven goals in the last five development squad games.

There was no chance of a hat-trick for the first year scholar as he was replaced by Khius Metz moments later.

Anderson wrapped up the win by towering to meet Jackson’s flag kick to thump his header past Owen Evans from close range 12 minutes from time.
