MARVIN Sordell made his pre-season comeback by making one and scoring another in Burnley’s win over Graham Alexander’s Fleetwood Town.

The Clarets welcomed back their trio of injured forwards, with Sam Vokes and Jelle Vossen also returning, having earlier added to their attacking options with the capture of Everton youngster Chris Long.

Sean Dyche’s side displayed a better tempo in response to their disappointing defeat at Chesterfield on Saturday.

Although Fleetwood offered an early threat with former Accrington Stanley favourite Jimmy Ryan stinging Tom Heaton’s hands from distance, before Antoni Sarcevic’s shot was deflected wide off Michael Keane inside the first 10 minutes, Burnley went on to take control.

And they took the lead in the 14th minute through Stephen Ward.

While Michael Kightly was picking out Sordell on the edge of the box with a left wing pass, Ward was sprinting through to meet a quick and clever lay-off from the fit-again striker.

The first shot was saved by the keeper, the second blocked, but Ward persisted to turn the ball in from a tight angle.

After creating the first, Sordell scored the second from the spot in the 26th minute after being brought down by ex-Claret Stephen Jordan, who wore the captain’s armband against his former club.

Burnley had led 2-0 against Chesterfield on Saturday but let that lead slip to suffer a late 3-2 defeat.

There seemed little danger of a repeat last night with Ward looking sharp in both attack and defence, and Keane looking to take his chance to earn a first team place. Keane started central defence alongside Ben Mee, who was given the armband.

Kightly was also determined and went in hard on Forbes, and was duly booked.

The only blip was when Sarcevic beat the offside trap to put pressure on Heaton when Ward raised a hand and the rest of the defence stopped.

Heaton ran out but the midfielder was first to it, and to Burnley’s relief he rolled his shot across the face of goal.

A front two of Sordell and the fit-again Jelle Vossen was packed with power and pace, with Vossen particularly effective against the ball on this occasion.

Great feet from Scott Arfield created space on the right to send a diagonal to Vossen, but the Belgian could not get his shot away.

Burnley started the second half with Sam Vokes, on for Sordell after recovering from a minor knock, and Cameron Dummigan for right back Matt Lowton.

Both sides made changes on the hour.

Kightly, who played the full 90 minutes, had a shot spilled by Chris Maxwell.

Soon after coming on, Lukas Jutkiewicz found himself helping out the back line in heading over Sarcevic’s shot. Jordan climbed at the far post to meet it, but could only flick his header behind.

Kightly could have wrapped it up with a late free kick, while Cameron Dummigan was unlucky not to hit the target with an excellent shot from distance.
