BURNLEY remain in negotiations with Genk over striker Jelle Vossen, after testing the water over a transfer fee, after securing experienced defender Michael Duff on a new one-year deal.

The Belgium club have set a pricetag in the region of 3-4million euros but the Clarets have so far fallen short of the preferred figure for a player who has a new five-year contract on the table.

After spending last season on loan with Middlesbrough, where he scored nine goals in 40 games for the Championship club, Vossen is keen to remain in England this season.

Manager Sean Dyche was hopeful of adding two players to his squad before leaving for the club’s pre-season training camp in France on Monday, and it is understood the Belgium international is one of them.

But Burnley will have to up the ante if they are to land a key target.

Vossen had been in England for talks this week, but reported back for duty with Genk yesterday, arriving at the team hotel in Belgium in the morning to take part in pre-season and a team bonding session which involved wading through a swamp.

One deal the Clarets were able to wrap up yesterday was another 12-month contract for Duff, taking him into his 12th season at Turf Moor.

The 37-year-old defender cost the club just £30,000 when he was signed from Cheltenham Town in the summer of 2004.

He has gone on to become Burnley’s joint-15th all-time appearances maker, equalling Derek Scott’s record with 358.

Centre half Duff played alongside captain Jason Shackell during the promotion and Premier League campaigns, but concerns remain over that partnership being broken up with Derby County remaining keen to re-sign their former skipper.

The Rams, who have so far made six summer signings, had a bid of around £2million rejected last month but it is understood that is not the end of negotiations.

Shackell has 12 months remaining on his contract and the Clarets are keen to keep hold of him as they bid to mount another promotion challenge.

Derby are among the promotion favourites along with Burnley.
