THE future of Burnley captain Jason Shackell remains uncertain, with the centre half still a target for Derby County.

But the Clarets are still planning for a future with the 31-year-old in their squad.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche is not only expecting Shackell to report back for the first day of pre-season training tomorrow, but also to travel with the rest of the squad to France on Sunday for their training camp.

After losing Danny Ings and Kieran Trippier Dyche stressed there would not be any other unwanted exits from Turf Moor as they prepare for another shot at promotion back to the Premier League.

But the Burnley boss's defiance does not appear to have deterred Derby, who have kept their former skipper in their sights.

Having had an earlier bid in the region of £2million turned down the Rams have exercised patience with Shackell, who only recently returned from honeymoon.

Dyche is only interested in adding to his squad, though, and could renew interest in midfielder Emyr Huws.

The 21-year-old is thought to have been a target for the Clarets' chief a year ago, before he joined Wigan Athletic from Manchester City for £2.5million.

But just 12 months down the line the Wales international could be on the move following the Latics' relegation to League One.

Huws suffered an ankle injury in January and did not kick a ball again for the rest of the season, but has reported back to pre-season training.

Wigan chairman David Sharpe expects his side to pack plenty of financial clout in their bid for a quick return to the Championship, claiming their budget will be "five times more than anyone in League One".

But the lure of Championship football, to a side that will expect to be challenging for promotion once more, is likely to be a factor in Burnley's favour should they make a move for Huws.
