SEAN Dyche believes Matt Taylor is man enough to bounce back from his spot kick agony when he returns to former club West Ham United on Saturday.

Taylor suffered the heartbreak of missing a crucial penalty against relegation rivals Leicester City at the weekend – 59 seconds before Jamie Vardy scored the only goal of the game for the visitors.

Burnley travel to West Ham in what has now become a must win game for the Clarets, and Taylor will face the Hammers for the first time since departing Upton Park at the end of last season.

The 33-year-old made 90 appearances in three seasons at West Ham, helping them into the Premier League, and Dyche is certain that the vastly experienced midfielder will respond in the right fashion on Saturday.

The Burnley boss says it was not necessary for the Clarets squad to rally round Taylor.

“There was no need to,” Dyche said.

“We have one of the most honest groups in football. They know how it feels, they know the feeling when it’s like that, so they’re not rallying round him.

“He’s a man, not a boy. He’s been around this block a long time.”

Taylor’s team-mate Michael Duff similarly has no concerns about how the left footer will respond.

“It’s the life of a penalty taker, you get all the glory but you’re going to miss one every now and then,” Duff said.

“He’s spent his whole career in this league and he’s big enough and experienced enough to deal with a penalty miss.

“No-one’s beating him with a stick over it, he’ll probably beat himself more than anything.

“All the lads will stick together.”

Dyche knows Burnley need ‘a big result’ at Upton Park on Saturday, with their chances of survival looking increasingly slim. The Clarets have won only five games all season.

He said: “There’s growth in the team but it has to lead to wins and I’ve been in the game long enough to know how quickly football can change.

“Of course, we have to make it change and we can’t rely on others, but Leicester have shown that if you can get one, you can get two, three and four.

“It’s tough, but we are in it to win it and we’ve all seen how one result changes the whole look of the division at times.

“We need that next big result and it’s a big challenge for us going to West Ham but we’re in there fighting and we’ll do that all the way.”
