THE Football Association have announced that they will not take retrospective action against Burnley striker Ashley Barnes for the challenge with Nemanja Matic in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho called for Barnes to be handed a six-match suspension after the striker's controversial role in the game at Stamford Bridge.

Barnes caught Matic on the shin in the 69th minute after attempting to lay the ball off to a team-mate, and the Serbian was then sent off for leaping to his feet and pushing the Burnley player over.

Mourinho also felt Barnes should have been sent off for a 30th-minute challenge on Branislav Ivanovic, and called for retrospective action to be taken against the Clarets star.

But the FA have now released a statement confirming that no action will be taken against Barnes as the Matic incident was seen by referee Martin Atkinson, who did not award a foul at the time.

The statement said: "In the vast majority of challenges for the ball, no retrospective action is taken as the incident has been seen by the match officials.

"Retrospective action was introduced as a deterrent for ‘off the ball incidents’ (eg kicks, stamps etc) committed out of sight of officials.

"The whole game is in agreement that, in the vast majority of cases, match officials are best placed to deal with incidents to avoid re-refereeing.

"In line with this rationale, FA confirm no further action in relation to Ashley Barnes as the incident was seen by the officials."
