IF recent history is anything to go by, we should be in for a hatful of goals at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

Burnley and Tottenham have met four times since the 2008/09 season and there have been 21 goals in those fixtures.

There might have been just 12 goals in Burnley’s last six games, but if the floodgates are likely to open at any point this season it could well be against Spurs.

In January 2009 the two sides met in the League Cup semi-finals, with a final spot at Wembley on the line.

Owen Coyle was still in charge of the Clarets and it was a season that would end with another trip to the national stadium for the play-off final victory over Sheffield United, and promotion to the Premier League.

The chances of a first major cup final appearance since 1962 looked to be over when Burnley were beaten 4-1 in north London by Harry Redknapp’s side.

It was a month that brought freezing weather and heavy snowfall across England, and the first leg was played in arctic conditions with temperatures plunging to -10C.

Things had started well for the Clarets when Martin Paterson gave them a 15th minute lead which they held on to until half time.

But Spurs struck four times in 22 minutes at the start of the second half through Michael Dawson, Jamie O’Hara, Roman Pavlyuchenko and a Michael Duff own goal.

Fifteen days later the sides met at Turf Moor for what was expected to be a formality, with Spurs 1/100 to secure their place at Wembley.

But on a famous night, Burnley took the lead thanks to a superb free kick from Robbie Blake.

On 73 minutes Chris McCann made it 2-0, and when Jay Rodriguez scored two minutes from time the comeback was complete, and the tie went to extra time.

It wasn’t to be for Coyle’s side though.

As legs tired Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe scored in the 118th and 120th minutes to secure the 6-4 aggregate win.

The following season the two sides met in the Premier League.

Under Coyle’s guidance Burnley were thumped 5-0 at White Hart Lane, with Robbie Keane scoring four and Jermaine Jenas getting the other.

Burnley were already relegated by the time the two teams met again on the final day of the season, and Brian Laws was now in the dugout for the home side.

It proved to be a memorable farewell to the Premier League.

Tottenham were 2-0 up just after the half hour mark, with two players who now represent Real Madrid getting the goals, in Gareth Bale and Luka Modric.

But remarkably Burnley roared back. Wade Elliott got one back before the break and Jack Cork made it 2-2 after 54 minutes.

Paterson put the Clarets in front on 71 minutes and Steven Thompson made it four two minutes from time.

That last meeting was four-and-a -half years ago, but only one of the 28 players who either started or came off the bench might be involved this Saturday.

Every one of the 14 Clarets players involved has since left the club, while only Aaron Lennon remains with Tottenham.
