ASHLEY Barnes scored the winning goal for the second time in four days as a strong Burnley Development Squad beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0.

The Clarets played a behind-closed-doors friendly at Wednesday's Middlewood Road training ground, fielding seven first team regulars.

Northern Ireland Under 19 international Conor Mitchell kept a clean sheet, while Ben Mee featured at centre-back and Steven Reid captained the side from right-back, with Danny Lafferty and Kevin Long also featuring in the back four.

Ross Wallace played on the left of midfield, with Steven Hewitt and Nathan Lowe in the middle, and a trialist on the right, while Marvin Sordell partnered Barnes in a strong looking forward line.

The Clarets could have been ahead inside the opening minute when Lowe burst through Wednesday's back defence and curled his effort just wide of the post.

The hosts had a goal disallowed when Emmanuel Dieseruvwe converted from an offisde position.

The decisive moment on 16 minutes when Barnes volleyed Wallace's free-kick over Brad McDonagh in the Wednesday goal.

Wallace could have added to the Clarets lead with two shots from distance which went narrowly wide, while at the other end Mitchell pulled off a wonderful save on the stroke of half time to deny Mani Dieseruvwe.

Barnes twice went close in the second half, while Mitchell saved Rhys McCabe's dipping 20-yard free-kick.
