GEORGE Boyd is hoping regular first team football at Turf Moor can help get him back in the Scotland squad – and he wants Scott Arfield to join him.

Boyd’s two caps for the national team have both come under Gordon Strachan, most recently as a substitute in a 2-2 draw with Nigeria at the end of May.

But the former Hull City winger did not make the squad for the Tartan Army’s 2-1 defeat in Germany in September or this week’s double header, which sees Strachan’s side face Poland tonight after beating Georgia 1-0 on Saturday.

Boyd, who made his debut playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying defeat in Serbia in March 2013, has not given up on his international ambitions.

“I really enjoyed playing for Scotland and hopefully if I can play well for Burnley then I can get back in it,” he said.

“But obviously playing well for Burnley is the most important thing, and if I play well for Burnley it helps itself out if I’m going to get back in the Scotland squad.”

The 29-year-old, who signed for the Clarets for a fee of around £3m on September 1, qualifies for Scotland because his maternal grandfather was born in Glasgow.

Before his move to Peterborough from non-league Stevenage, Boyd was a regular in the England C team, which is for players outside of the Football League.

He is now playing regularly alongside Scott Arfield, who has so far not been called up by Strachan despite impressing for Burnley in the opening weeks of the season.

“They’re doing so well at the minute and he’s (Gordon Strachan) got his squad together,” said Boyd, “but you never know with a few injuries there’s a chance for the likes of me and Scotty Arfield, who's been playing really well, to get in the squad.

“I think he’s deserved to be in the last two squads the way he’s playing, if he keeps playing well that’s all he can do, keep playing like he is and hopefully he will get in.

“I think he (Strachan) knows what we’ve got, so it’s up to him to put us in the squad.”

Boyd is relishing regular first team football at Turf Moor, having started the last four Burnley games since his arrival from the KC Stadium.

“This is the first time I’ve played regularly for a while,” he added, “and I’m just loving playing week in, week out, it’s nice to train all week and have something good to look forward to at the end of the week, so I’m loving it at the minute.”

Now he has set his sights on helping Burnley to a first win of the season, with successive home games against West Ham and Everton up next.

“The way we’ve played at home, obviously I missed the first two, but we’ve played really well and Sunderland we created enough chances to win the game so we go in full of confidence, especially after last week’s result, to get three points.”
