MICHAEL Kightly scored the goals that pushed Burnley over the line in the promotion race last season, and he hopes he can go on another goalscoring run after netting at Leicester City on Saturday.

Kightly’s goal against Wigan Athletic confirmed promotion for the Clarets last term, after he had netted in a crucial win at Blackpool days earlier.

The winger scored five goals in total as a regular in the starting line-up during the 2013/14 campaign but was making only his second league start of the new season after minor knee surgery in the summer.

Kightly ended Burnley’s 655-minute goal drought when he scored their first goal in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at the King Power Stadium.

“It was nice to get a goal,” he said. “It would be nice if I can get a few more. I just want to knuckle down and work hard. It was only my second start of the season, I missed all the pre-season, so I want to build on my fitness and hopefully I can get a few more goals.

“It was a shame to concede straight away, every time we’ve scored so far we’ve conceded straight after so hopefully we can stop doing that.

“But we showed great character and deserved the point.”

Kightly insisted that there was a feeling within the squad before Saturday’s game that they would improve drastically on the 4-0 loss at West Bromwich Albion six days earlier.

“Last week was so disappointing,” said the former Stoke wide man.

“The gaffer gets disappointed when we don’t try doing the things that he wants us to do.

“He wants us to play with freedom, there’s none of this sitting behind the ball and trying to nick a point. He wants us to go out and attack. We didn’t do that against West Brom and we all know that.

“He spoke to us last week and told us that nobody had died, it’s not the end of the world. We lost a game. Other than that we’ve performed pretty well.

“On Saturday you could just feel that we were going to play better than last week, which isn’t hard.

“There was a different feel about us. Last week just wasn’t us. We worked so hard to get in to the Premier League and last week we were miles below our standards.

“You could just feel in the dressing room that we had that belief that we were going to be a lot better.

“We created loads of chances against Sunderland so we looked at that and knew that’s what we had to keep on doing for the goals to come. They came on Saturday.”

Burnley have conceded six goals in their last two games after a previous run of clean sheets, but the Clarets were just relieved to end their drought at the other end.

“It was nice to get two goals because we’ve been criticised for not scoring,” said defender Ben Mee.

“We’ll take a lot of confidence from getting a point.

“To score a late goal to win or draw a game will put you on a bit of a high.”

Mee admitted there were similarities on Saturday with the important draw secured late on at Watford at the end of last season, when the Clarets were also severely depleted with injuries.

“It was a similar game actually,” he said. “We hung around in the game, and that’s because we’ve got a lot of character in the side. You can never count us out.

“It was a one-off against West Brom and it’s the first time it’s happened since the gaffer's been here.

“It was a good game to play in on Saturday and it must have been exciting to watch.

“Our fans were fantastic and for them to travel in the numbers that they did, it was good to see them happy at the end.”
