But the 19-year-old England under-21 midfielder, who is in his fourth loan spell, but his first in the Premier League, did not make the bench.

Keane, 21, and Chalobah both joined the Clarets on deadline day to increase competition for places in Sean Dyche’s squad.

Both were on international duty with England under-21s at the time and only arrived at Gawthorpe on the Thursday before Burnley travelled to Crystal Palace, a fixture that came too early for either be involved in.

“We’re just bringing him up to speed with the way that we work physically,” Dyche said when asked why Chalobah wasn’t involved against Sunderland. “He’s getting used to the group.”

Chalobah is highly-rated at Stamford Bridge and was impressive in a loan spell at Watford in the 2012/13 season, during which he scored in a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor.

He has since had spells at Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough, before joining the Clarets for the first four months of this season.

“He’s a young man learning his trade – I mentioned that when he came in with Michael – so that’s all it is,” said Dyche.

Chalobah was an unused substitute for Chelsea at the age of 15, in a League Cup clash against Newcastle, and also travelled with the squad to the 2012 Champions League final in Munich.
