JASON Shackell is targeting Burnley’s first win of the season on Saturday – insisting the Clarets need victories at Turf Moor if they are to stay in the Premier League.

The Clarets’ first two home games in the Premier League came against Chelsea and Manchester United but Sunderland are the next visitors to East Lancashire this weekend.

Burnley moved off the bottom of the table with an encouraging draw at Crystal Palace on Saturday and Shackell says that point will become an even better result if they can claim victory over Sunderland, who are also yet to win a top flight match so far this term.

But the skipper has warned that the Clarets, who have scored only once in their opening four league matches, will need to be at their best to secure a crucial three points.

“It will be a bit of an opportunity so hopefully we can get something, but we’ve got to be on it,” Shackell said.

“Obviously you want to try to get your wins at home and if you get anything on the road then it’s fantastic.

“The result at Crystal Palace becomes a really good point if you get a win.

“But we’ve just got to get our heads down, keep working hard and keep doing what we’re doing, hopefully the goals will come and we can try to pick up a few points.

“It will be another really tough game but another we've got to try to pick up something from and one we're looking forward to.

“We'll see what we can do.”

While Burnley know they must improve going forward, defensively they have impressed so far after conceding only four goals – three of them to a Chelsea side tipped by many for the title.

The Clarets have gone into the new season with the same back four and goalkeeper that helped them claim the best defensive record in the Championship on the way to promotion last season.

“We're confident,” centre back Shackell said.

“We know what we've got within the squad and how we played and defended last year, so we were confident coming into this season.

“You want to be tight at the back and if you're tight at the back then you can nick the odd goal and get some points.

“We've started all right and we're confident the goals will come.

“We're quietly confident after the start we've had.”
