Andy Lochhead: Burnley jigsaw is coming together

Lancashire Telegraph: Danny Ings, Kieran Trippier and Scott Arfield get ready for the new season Danny Ings, Kieran Trippier and Scott Arfield get ready for the new season

SEAN Dyche is ticking all the right boxes as he prepares his squad for the Premier League.

A goalkeeper, a winger, a left sided midfielder who doubles up as a wing back, a right back who can play in midfield and a striker.

Hopefully there are more to come, but the manager has certainly made a good start to bring a good blend of youth and experience to the squad.

Experience cannot be underestimated in the Premier League. And it’s not just about what the likes of Matt Taylor and Steven Reid can bring on the pitch.

Obviously they will be looking to play as much as possible, but their influence in and around the dressing room will be just as important when we make the step up, especially to the younger players.

It makes for a better squad and a better, much more rounded team and I think we will hold our own next season.

It’s also encouraging that despite many seasons at the top level they have not come to Burnley expecting to walk straight into the team.

They value the achievements of the squad last season and the talented group they are joining, and are making all the right noises about wanting to earn the right to play. They are not taking anything for granted.

They will be looking forward to getting out to Austria for a good training camp and chance to bond properly. These trips are always useful to get to know what makes your team-mates tick on and off the pitch.

Whether any other new faces will join them before they jet off remains to be seen. Certainly the inflated fee for Ross McCormack has put a spanner in the works for buying clubs.

And what price Danny Ings – the Championship player of the year – now if McCormack can command £11million.

Hopefully that’s something we won’t have to worry about and he follows on from Sam Vokes, Kieran Trippier and now Scott Arfield in signing a new deal.

I, and all the Burnley fans, live in hope.

Who's the right back who can play in midfield or up front? If he means Reid he's made a big mistake!

Assembling a squad he may well be - but they are not Premier League quality players!!! Hull (very recently a championship club) - Jelavic, Long, Huddlestone, Livermore, Ince......Burnley Reid, Taylor, Sordell etc.. Nowhere near good enough to compete at the top table! Reid was past it when he left us (yes Im a rovers fan) - none of this is a dig - just a realistic opinion on football. You must spend to survive. Fact! even the most die hard Burnley fans surely cannot be excited by recent signings. Probably been harsh on Taylor as he does have quality - but to date the rest of your signings just spell fear. Fear of spending big and then being relegated and left with big wages etc. But somewhere along the line the chairman must take a gamble. Nothing ventured nothing gained n' all that. The teams whom you will be competing with ie Swansea, Villa, West Brom et al - all have Premier league quality players scattered throughout their squads - In my unbiased opinion, you only have trippier, arfield, ings, heaton and possibly vokes who could cut it and albeit an outstanding manager.

Thoughts???

Dont wanna get into a childish rant over how bad rovers have been, turmoil etc, just asking sensible realistic fans your honest opinion of signings and chances of staying up.

After all - that is surely what these forums are for?

Very fair and thoughtful comments I think. I have feelings of Deja vu just now, this time last year I looked at our signings and thought we were going to be relegation fodder. Shows how much I know. Nevertheless this is a big step up in class and we probably need 3 more signings who will provide some of that class. Doesn't have to be a marquee name but I would like to see Dyche be given a £20m transfer budget. Snodgrass would have been a good signing for Burnley, so would Bryson. So we should not lose out on any more guys the manager wants to bring in. We should try and sign Deeney and Dawson and try and bring in a quality midfielder who can do the kind of job that Huddlestone did with Hull last year.

Treacy out, Gilks in, works on every level just keep pounding the living sheite out of it.

Hooray, sensible posting.
Agree with both of you. Last time we brought in the quality of Fletcher up front and for me he did a great job, especially his hold up play to bring the midfield into it. I am not seeing signings of this quality this time around. Lok how much we made out of him!!
Posted a while back about how Hull went and bought long and Jelavic and did anyone think Burnley would do similar if they have a good first half to the season and a chance of survival?
all this said I do think it is a poor bottom half of the premiership and I think 1 if not 2 of the promoted clubs will stay up. Fancy West Brom to struggle and there is always another who gets dragged down from the start, Palace and Sunderland being last years examples.
Last time we were there it proved what a long hard season it was. At Christmas we were all full of optimism having just drawn with (should have beaten) Arsenal at home. Take the Coyle factor out of it and eventually a lack of quality told.
Really hope that we can do well and achieve so much, heart says we can, head doesn't always agree. When we need to strengthen in January like Hull did we all know the Burnley board will not do so to the same tune.
Yes you can live beyond your means but you can also punch above your weight, you just have to make it a slightly more level playing field to do so.
the other factor is Ings. He looks every bit a quality prem player, let him go and the message is very clear. We have absolutely no need to sell him, he is in the shop window all season so will do his best to attract a club the following year who will only have to pay a compensation fee of say 5-6m. We could probably sell him for top whack 8-10m Will our board sh1t out for the sake of 3-5m? Or will they take a chance.........
UTC and here's hoping for a great season.

People are starting to talk sense finally. Problem with spending £20m is the wages to bring them in. Then that affects the rest of the squad. In reality, you either go for it and have a chance of staying up, or you certainly fall – if not the first season, miserably in the second when everyone works your one season wonder out. That means carrying a Premier League wage bill, scouting, training facilities, the works. Shoot me down for it, but it’s the reality of the situation. Until recent extraordinary times, Rovers managed it better than anyone else. You're being conned with Sordell etc

Turf Moor Tom. Used to be a Burnley fan in his early postings. Then, on the 28th April a new guy appeared on the block. His name is Another Pounding 4 Burnley.. He started as a Rovers fan who was going to shine a light on the massive shortcomings of Burnley FC and report on every game and rub our noses in massive defeat after massive defeat.

Turf Moor Tom used to post endless negative stuff about Burnley, but as a long-suffering season ticket holder at the Turf.

Then on the 18th May 2014, TMT and AP4B posted in a comment column about Sam Vokes. But a funny thing happened. TMT slated Burnley. AP4B negatively praised them in the manner of TMT! After much **** and flannel, he disappeared. When he came back both these IDs carried on with what we have today, the one named as a Burnley fan now a Blackburn fan and the one set us a Blackburn van doing the negative stuff about Burnley. Later we got rubbish about running out of letters so that he wasn't able to register Another Pounding 4 Burnley's Rivals, or some such nonsense.

Hilarious sweetie. By and for - in this context, complete opposites. Such credibility. Such savvy.

Everyone notes that, on the two occasions you've had to deny what I've written and question the evidence, you've taken nether. It's good when a guy fesses up. Well done.

Now get your shoulders back, go straight and give everyone your best double-barrelling. You are Rovers fan. Be overt about it. Go after those football matters you crave and give it your best. I recommend you drop TMT and stick with AP4B, but as a Rovers fan. Come out sweetie, you know you want to!

Still, your scraping of the bottom of the barrel for reasons to type utter claptrap about us is giving great laughs in East Lancs.

Thank you. If you think I want Bumley to fall in to oblivion you're wrong. I'm far happier playing each other, love the derby and love to hate you on those days. As much as I'd like the derby to be back in the Prem, if we have to play you over the long term we all know realistically that is back in the Championship. What I took exception to was a lot of the guff coming out of Bumley from a particular idiot that you were up above Rovers forever. That can never be true for clubs like ours. I can't honestly say I wish you all the best and a lot of comments I make are made tongue in cheek to wind up the numpties, though either way the underlying theme is always more sense than a lot of the blinkered claret tinted spec brigade would care to believe. It's going to be interesting to see what Douche does, the way he's set things up I have to say it looks like he's going for the long term and to avoid any turmoil from a likely relegation. That said, I can't see much chance for you next season and if you scrape it, certainly not the next. Painful, but perhaps sensible management and I'd hope it's not due to the Directors sticky fingers. For a manager to play it that way in this day and age I have to admit is quite honourable. Time will tell.

Our seats are wood stained. Not stained with the eternal dye that is the end of football as we knew it with the influx of Jack's cash. And we know how to make the most of what we have without the intervention of millions of pounds of throwaway dosh. What you have had is worthless in many true football fans' eyes. Success should be earned not purchased. Wood stain or not (and its paint actually) its part of real football for real fans and erm, your point was what, exactly?

Oh no, turns out you talk garbage too. Is it some qualification required to enter TurdMorgue? You will NEVER achieve anything of any note. You are defined by Rovers and your jealousy of their success. Yes a fan called Jack invested but as I've pointed out before, the team assembled was sold on for more than double AND achieved his goal - to get in and win the top honour before it all changed. Imagine that as a money obsessed Dingle - achieving your goal AND making a profit. Has any fan of Bumley got such vision or balls to back it up. Failure is in your genes. Just a matter of time. Tickety tock.
