BURNLEY boss Sean Dyche praised scorer Sam Vokes for a ‘first class’ performance, and told his players not to get worked up about the win they should have earned against Sheffield Wednesday.

The Clarets bossed Saturday’s Championship clash with Sheffield Wednesday but Vokes’ opener was cancelled out by Chris Maguire.

The Clarets dropped below QPR to third but extended their unbeaten home league run to 17 games.

And Dyche said that statistic was not to be underestimated.

“It’s a good marker. It makes people aware that it’s a tough place to come and it certainly is,” said the Burnley boss.

“If we keep giving performances like that we know where it takes you and that’s winning lots of games.

“You’ve got to look at the performance and I’m very happy with that performance.

“I really enjoyed it. I thought we played some good mixed football.

“I think it’s the most effective way of putting the opposition on the back foot.

“We want the players to find that mixture – can they play long to stretch teams but then can they play on the in betweens, get the full backs on and put good quality into the box?

“I thought there was all of that.”

Of individual efforts, Dyche added: “I thought Sam Vokes was absolutely first class. Dean Marney and David Jones again, all the good habits were there for everyone to see.

“Danny Ings had a number of chances and showed some real good qualities. He’s kept one low and hit the post, got through and – unlike him – just hit one in the keeper’s hands, had another one which was a great save, Jonah’s had one cleared off the line, in the first half Marney puts one past the post.”

Dyche was disappointed with the equaliser, saying: “It was a really poor goal from us.

“We’d just scored and was a silly free kick, which is unlike us, and then didn’t deal with a ball into the box.”

But he refused to dwell on their disappointment.

“Our markers have been fantastic defensively this year,” he said.

“I put a lot of pressure on the team to deliver better than that but they have done at large so I’m not going to over question that.”
