BURNLEY defender Luke O'Neill has returned a day early from his loan spell with York City.

The right back has been recalled by the Clarets ahead of their FA Cup third round tie at Southampton, and will travel with the squad.

The 22-year-old former Mansfield defender has spent the last three months with the League Two Minstermen and was scheduled to return after tomorrow's games.

But Clarets boss Sean Dyche has opted to bring O'Neill back into the fold ahead of schedule following a number of knocks to defenders.

Michael Duff limped out of Sunday's goalless draw with Wigan Athletic, although was fit enough for the New Year's Day win over Huddersfield Town, but Ben Mee went off in the second half after returning from a two-game absence with a thigh problem.

O’Neill, who played 16 times for York during his loan spell, has made two appearances for the Clarets since joining from Mansfield Town in July 2012 - his last as a substitute in the final Championship game of last season, at home to Ipswich Town.
