Dave Burnley column: Claret Kightly has shone in the background

Lancashire Telegraph: Michael Kightly Michael Kightly

IF there is one Clarets player who has made a significant but largely unnoticed contribution to put current standing at the top of the table then it is Michael Kightly.

Our most substituted regular starter has quietly done about his business on the pitch without hitting the headlines until his screaming shot settled the game against Barnsley on Saturday and he must have thought that hitting the winner would keep him on the pitch, especially when the number 14 was flashed on the substitutes board.

But although David Jones trotted off to the sidelines he was quickly waved back on and Kightly was taken off for another early departure.

Yet there were no signs of any discontent or gesticulations towards the manager Sean Dyche as he accepted the decision in a professional manner.

Remember this was once a footballer courted by Sir Alex Ferguson before injuries slowed his progress.

He’s been a more than useful addition and maybe a successful spell with Burnley could rekindle his prospects.

You're right, even your own supporters must be unaware they are playing judging by the amount of empty seats this under the radar squad can achieve

This weeks "Spot the supporter" sponsored by evans timber was won by WLUV who correctly predicted that there would be between 10 and 10.5 K on at the turf for the last home game. He will be presented with his I love pot noodle onsie at the next home game.

Poor old Blackburn mongoloids.

A club that managed a paltry 12500 home fans recently has the cheek to attempt to criticise Burnley's crowds? What a set of hypocritical horse-fondling neanderthals.

As officially the best team in Lancashire I suggest you run along and bother some other club that is nearer your team's levels - like PNE for example - they also have a superiority complex and think they are better than everyone else, and ended up getting relegated with their tails wedged between their legs - you will definitely get along.

Blackburn, the Preston North End of the Championship.

After all what's the worst that could happen, new owners, after a cheap awareness campaign of their brand.
To be humiliated by the chaos on and off the pitch, and by lack of forward direction that the club is moving in.
To be made aware that the club expect to have made a loss of over 100m by the end of this season, FFP fines and embargo's to come.
And on top of that, the team you took great joy in mocking, now sits on top of the league, and financially better off too, even with less gates than you.
Once able to boast of premiership status, now a mid table joke of a club playing in the championship.
80% attendance (with which the club was losing money) now down to less than 46%. No way of breaking even with those numbers. Their so called supporters, ain,t putting their money where their pretentious mouths are, and are prepared to watch jacks dream crumble and disintegrate into oblivion.
A living nightmare, thank god I'm a Dingle.
And even if Burnley lose automatic spots, even if they don't make play offs. Its a club I'm proud to support and has proven to be so much better than Venky fc on so many levels, UTC
