BURNLEY have taken only one point from their first two games of the new Championship season after slipping to defeat at Crystal Palace this afternoon.

An early header from Jonathan Parr and an Owen Garvan penalty gave the home side victory before substitute Marvin Bartley was sent off for violent conduct in injury time.

The Clarets started slowly and Norwegian Parr ghosted in unmarked to head the home side in front from Ryan McGivern's left-wing cross in the ninth minute.

Darren Ambrose then lashed a shot over for Palace but Burnley started to take over possession as the half went on, with Julian Speroni having to make a fine save to deny Jay Rodriguez's header from Kieran Trippier's cross.

Ross Wallace then twice went close with dangerous free kicks but Paddy McCarthy might have made it 2-0 just before the interval, putting a free header over from Garvan's corner.

Burnley felt they should have been awarded a penalty at the start of the second half when Wade Elliott's run was halted by Parr, although Palace probably should have doubled their lead when Jermaine Easter collected Sean Scannell's through pass and took the ball past Lee Grant before his shot was blocked by Andre Amougou.

Aleksandar Tunchev then put a free header wide from Garvan's free kick but the hosts did make it 2-0 in the 66th minute.

Ben Mee tripped Scannell in the penalty area and Garvan sent Lee Grant the wrong way from the spot.

Amougou missed a fine chance to get Burnley back in the game when he put a free header wide from Trippier's cross, and substitute Charlie Austin could not quite turn another centre from the right back into the far corner.

The Clarets then saw Bartley sent off after the midfielder appeared to lash out at Parr in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
