BURNLEY will have to wait to have their Premier League survival confirmed after claiming a point against West Brom in a seesaw affair at Turf Moor.

It looked like it would be a celebration when Sam Vokes struck to give the Clarets the lead early in the second half, but goals from Salomon Rondon and Craig Dawson had the visitors in front with 10 minutes to go.

Vokes scored four minutes from time to rescue a point that was the least Sean Dyche’s side deserved.

A win would have confirmed Burnley’s place in the Premier League next season, but they will be mathematically safe if Swansea fail to beat Everton in the late kick-off.

It was the Clarets who created the better first half chances. On 20 minutes Vokes did well to turn a deflected George Boyd cross towards goal from in front of the near post, but Ben Foster reacted quickly to save with his feet.

Five minutes later Matt Lowton’s dangerous cross was only headed clear by Jonny Evans as far as George Boyd at the back post, but he slashed a half-volley over the bar.

Scott Arfield was next to go close. Vokes linked with Ashley Barnes before the latter slipped in Arfield, but he saw his shot from inside the area blocked by James McClean.

It was a similar story at the start of the second half when James Tarkowski thumped a header from an Arfield corner just over the crossbar.

The breakthrough finally came 10 minutes into the second half. Barnes broke into the area and went down under a push in the back from Jake Livermore. Whiles the linesman flagged for a penalty referee Mike Jones waved it away and instead Barnes got back to his feet and sent in a low cross which Vokes turned home at the near post.

West Brom had hardly created a chance of note until they levelled after a brief spell of pressure. Gareth McAuley’s header from Chris Brunt’s corner hit a Burnley header and looped onto the bar, but the Baggies kept the ball alive and James McLean got the better of Lowton when the Clarets right-back got pulled under a diagonal ball and from his cut back Rondon was able to turn and fire past Tom Heaton from close range.

That goal brought Albion to life and they took the lead with 12 minutes to go as Dawson edged ahead of James Tarkowski from Brunt’s corner and his header hit Barnes’ and then the post before finding the back of the net.

Andre Gray, Robbie Brady and Johann Berg Gudmundsson all came off the bench to try and inspire the Clarets to an equaliser and it was Gray who had a chance after he linked with Arfield, but from 18 yards  his wild shot found the upper tier of the Jimmy McIlroy Stand.

It was Brady who created the equaliser and that man Vokes who finished it. The Republic of Ireland international clipped in a free-kick which Ben Foster came for and then stopped and he found himself in no man’s land as Vokes looped a header over him and into an empty net.
