BURNLEY suffered yet more away day agony as an Andre Gray double wasn’t enough to earn a result at Swansea.

The Clarets had briefly led in the second half to spark dreams of a first away win of the season, but Martin Olsson levelled the scores before Fernando Llorente headed home an injury-time winner.

It was heartbreak for Burnley but they had been at their resilient best to stay in a game that the home side had dominated, with Llorente heading them in front in the first half before Gray had equalised from a controversial penalty.

Jeff Hendrick returned to the Clarets side after his suspension, with Ashley Westwood making way, while illness ruled Tom Heaton out so Paul Robinson started in goal.

Swansea hit the woodwork twice within in a matter of seconds after 10 minutes. Alfie Mawson headed Gylfi Sigurdsson’s free-kick against the crossbar before the ball was sent back into the area and Mawson swivelled and sent a low shot against the post.

It was a scare for Burnley but they were behind within two minutes. Leroy Fer had the beating of Jeff Hendrick down the right and his cross was perfect for Llorente to attack and he headed it past  Robinson from six yards out.

Burnley were level on 20 minutes but it had a stroke of good fortune about it. Robbie Brady’s corner was handled by Sam Vokes as he tried to attack it, but referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot for a Clarets penalty, and Gray made no mistake, clipping his penalty down the middle as Lukasz Fabianski dived out of the way.

Swansea tried to respond, with the Liberty Stadium venting their anger at Taylor, and Paul Robinson made a reflex save on 25 minutes to deny Olsson from close range, before Sigurdsson sent a left-footed shot from the edge of the area across goal and narrowly wide.

The hosts twice went close in the final minute of the first half. Llorente sent a looping header from Olsson’s cross onto the bar before Sigurdsson’s 30-yard free-kick was punched clear by Robinson.

Sigurdsson was close again right at the start of the second half, his low curling effort went past the dive of Robinson but it had been read by captain Ben Mee who got behind his goalkeeper to clear off the line.

The Swans continued to make the running and Llorente should have done better when he glanced Tom Carroll’s cross wide of goal.

On the hour mark it was the Clarets who struck against the run of play. Matt Lowton’s diagonal found Sam Vokes, who flicked the ball into Gray’s feet and he turned 15 yards from goal and fired a left-footed effort into the corner of the net on the turn.

The lead just eight minutes. Sigurdsson was the architect for the Swans. His backheel sent the charging Olsson into the area and he crashed a shot beyond Robinson at the near post and into the roof of the net.

The equaliser saw the pressure mount from the home side, but Mee was again in the right position to clear off the line from Carroll in the final minute.

But it was heartbreak for the Clarets in injury time. They had been under pressure from crosses all afternoon and Carroll’s delivery saw Llorente get the better of Mee in the air and his header hit the back of the net.
