BURNLEY and Sunderland will have to do it all again next week after a dour FA Cup third round tie at the Stadium of Light.

The two sides will meet for the third time in just over three weeks in a replay.

It’s a match neither side wanted, with the battle for survival in the Premier League the number one priority, but they couldn’t find a way through.

The big team news was a second Burnley debut for Joey Barton, who came into the side after completing his Clarets return earlier in the week.

Also coming into a much changed starting XI were Nick Pope, Tendayi Darikwa, James Tarkowski, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Steven Defour and Sam Vokes.

In a first half of few chances Burnley had the best of them.

After five minutes Darikwa’s low cross was missed by Vokes but fell to Andre Gray, who fired wide from 10 yards.

Ten minutes later Scott Arfield’s excellent through ball sent Vokes clear but his shot was saved by Vito Mannone.

At the other end the Black Cats were seeing plenty of territory but producing little end product, with Jack Rodwell twice shooting wide from distance, while Pope made comfortable saves from a Seb Larsson free-kick and Adnan Januzaj’s low 20-yarder.

It didn’t improve greatly in the second half. Again Rodwell tried his luck from distance, with Pope tipping the shot over.

At the other end Tarkowski planted a header against the post from Defour’s corner, while substitute Jeff Hendrick saw an angled shot blocked by Papy Djilibodji.

It was the Clarets who were finishing strongly and Ashley Barnes was next to have a shot blocked, this time by Jason Denayer, after he’d collected Defour’s pass inside, while Vokes headed Defour’s corner over the bar with five minutes to go.

A replay was almost avoided in the final minute, with Barnes shrugging off Djilibodji to latch on to Darikwa’s ball, but he fired over the crossbar from an angle.
