FULL-TIME: Burnley 1 Wolverhampton Wanderers 2

Burnley have slumped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to fellow relegation strugglers Wolves in crunch game at Turf Moor.

A terrible error from Tyrone Mears gifted the visitors the lead on 26 minutes when his backwards header did not have enough pace to reach his keeper and it left Matthew Jarvis through on goal.

With only a stranded Brian Jensen to beat the midfielder tapped the ball around Beast and was left with the easiest of finishes from all of three inches to give the Black Country side a vital lead.

Wolves extended their lead less than a minute into the second half when Adiene Guedioura’s effort from the edge of the area deflected off Clarke Carlisle’s heel and past an out-stretched Brian Jensen.

Wade Elliott failed to clear a corner and as the ball was worked out to Guedioura on the right he was not closed down and allowed to get his shot away, and it proved costly.

Burnley got themselves back into the game in the 73rd minute when Steven Thompson was free in the area to head home.

Mears’ cross from the right was not cleared properly and fell to Graham Alexander on the edge of the box. The Scot’s half-volley crashed into the ground and found Thompson unmarked 12 yards out to give his side some hope and set up a frantic finale.

And Graham Alexander had a golden chance to draw his side level three minutes later, but he could only drive over the bar from just inside the area after being teed up by Elliott.

Wolves substitute Michael Mancienne forced a good save with seven minutes left on the clock but his low drive was well saved by Jensen.

Referee Steven Bennett was centre of attention five minutes into the second half when Martin Paterson thought he’d won a penalty. The striker’s cross hit the arm of Christophe Berra but the man in black adjudged it to be ball-to-hand.

And if the referee and the poor performance of the players up until that point had not annoyed the fans enough Brain Laws’ decision to substitute Chris Eagles certainly did.

The Turf Moor crowd booed the move before chants of ‘Eagles, Eagles’ reverberated around the ground as Steven Thompson came on.

Andre Bikey was also replaced, with Robbie Blake coming on in the Cameroonian’s place to complete the substitutions after Stephen Jordan was on for the injured Danny Fox just before the break.

And two of the substitutes almost combined to get Burnley back in the game after Captain Alexander’s disguised pass found Jordan in the box half-way through the second half. The left-back played it out to Blake but his low cross came flying back off the outside of the post with Hahnemann beaten.

Kevin Doyle could have extended the visitors’ lead further just before the hour-mark, but after he battled through Carlisle’s challenge his left-footed effort went agonisingly past the far post with Jensen beaten.

And Doyle and Jensen clashed in the first half in very different circumstances after Beast came rushing out of his area and was rounded by the Irishman.

And the Dane was lucky to escape with only a caution as he clattered the striker and conceded a free kick.

Had Jensen not already been booked he may not have been so hesitant when faced with Jarvis for the opening goal.

David Nugent came close to finding an equaliser just before the break when he turned his marker and his effort beat Marcus Hahnemann, but his shot crashed into the ground and bounced up onto the crossbar and over.

That was the closest the home side came to getting a goal back in a quiet opening period where neither team really threatened for a prolonged period.

The second half started in similar fashion but after Thompson’s goal the game was transformed into an altogether more entertaining affair with the home side going in search of a second goal.

But it wasn’t to be and the defeat leaves Burnley adrift in the relegation zone after big wins for many of their rivals compounded a poor performance.

That's 5 points out of 60 (Sixty) for teams managed by Brian Laws! Thousands of Dingles left with 20 mins to go when The Eagles was de-landed and when 4 mins injury time was announced with them only one goal behind more than half the seats were empty according to the radio - some fans eh!

Mr-Reasonable, I have to agree with you on your comment. Serveral team members have been guilty of making that quote. Great home form before the turn of the year with 5 wins 4 draws and 1 defeat. Having said that our last 4 home games before the turn of the year were all draws.

Since the turn of the year we have had 1 win 1 draw and 3 defeats at home. Add to that those last 4 drawn before the end of the year 1 win 5 draws 3 defeats,

So the home form that will keep us up has amassed us over the last 9 home games 8 points from 27.

Now i dont know if its me being thick but i dont think thats good home form or good enough to keep us up. Am i right or wrong ;0).

Add that to our tremendous away form 1 point from 45. I cant see us staying in this league if we cant win the next away game and win the home game against Rovers.

Im not giving up hope but if we dont win those games we will for sure be leaving the premiership.

Bluerob, i think your dead right geez. I was sad to see him leave Burnley but you can't blame the guy for having ambition. I just wished it could have been with Burnley.

Many Clarets fans i guess were hoping he was going to fail at Bolton. I was'nt one of them. You can see hes a good manager and that is starting to show from there last few games taking 9 points from 12 .

So the way things are going at the moment come the end of the season he would have prooved alot of people wrong and quite right to give old fans the bird for the harsh treatment they gave him.

Bluerob , we were the better team slightly, created the better chances and hit the woodwork twice. I think a draw would have been a fair result.

However we can't keep shooting ourselves in the foot defensively and we can't keep missing the chances we make and we sure cant keep letting teams get the first goal.

Last 9 home games, 1 win, 5 draws and 3 defeats.

8 points from 27.

Now thats the kinda Home form that will keep us up!

1 point from 45 AWAY from home.

0 wins 1 draw 14 defeats.

Can we win 2 and draw 2 of our last four away games on that form?

Surely it will be 4 wins from 4 cos are away form will keep us up !

I'm afraid to admit it, well not really. We are playing Championship football next season. We are now in 18th position 4 points behind Wolves, who have a game in hand. We will not pull hese points back. We are only 4 points in front of Pompey who are at the bottom with 2 games over us. This I'm afraid could be more embarrasing than I feared. Portsmouth with their points deduction could still finish higher than us. Maybe all you Rovers fans were correct. Laws just cannot motivate a win out of this team. Heads are hanging low and they are tired. We should have beaten Pompey and Wolves at home. I felt if this happened we'd be safe but we prooved to the whole football world that we just cannot cut it in this league. Well done wolves, you deserved this a lot more than us. Start planning for some good championship away weekends next season lads.

Interesting stats on MOTD last night. Rovers away form is as dire as ours with just 1 win in there last 19 away games.

BL has 1 win in his last 22 matches that he has been at the helm at (Burnley/Sheff Wed).

Those stats make for an interesting game come the 28th.

Rovers have Chelsea, birmingham in back to back home games coming up, two very tuff games to have ahead of a derby.

Burnley have Wigan away and this has got to be a must win game and one to break our away day duck.

However easier said than done as I've said before we have never beaten them away and had only 2 wins in all compititions in 20 matches.

That has to change and it has to change on Saturday.

If we get that away win then it sets up the derby game nicely and one we have to win.

Last Home top flight win Apr 1963 lol but we all know its been just over 31 years since we picked up a win over our rivals and what a year that was as it was the double over them.

Like with anything it has to change at some point and hopefuly our luck will change at Wigan followed by a win against Rovers.

Dread to think what the squad will be next season. Eagles, Fletcher, Mears, will probably go, add to these the players who's contracts will not be renewed, and we will be back to rebuilding again. Laws must get it right or we could be looking at relegation again. With the wage restraints we have, we were never going to attract premiership class players. Our fate sealed before we kicked a ball. Lets hope for the best.
