FULL-TIME: Aston Villa 5 Burnley 2

BURNLEY were swept aside by a rampant Aston Villa outfit in the second half as they fell to a heavy defeat at Villa Park.

The Clarets went ahead when David Nugent teed up Steven Fletcher in the 10th minute, but Villa levelled just after the half-hour mark as Ashley Young's low cross found the far corner after Danny Fox had missed the ball at the near post.

The home side went in front in the 56th minute as Young broke and found Stewart Downing, whose right-footed shot beat defender Leon Cort on the line.

Downing made it 3-1 two minutes later as his 25-yard shot deflected off Fox and left Jensen wrong-footed, before the fourth arrived only three minutes afterwards as Emile Heskey converted Gabby Agbonlahor's cross.

Ailing Burnley then conceded a fifth in the 68th minute as Agbonlahor turned home James Milner's low centre.

Martin Paterson grabbed an injury-time consolation goal for Burnley with his first Premier League goal after a fine cross from Jack Cork.

I have said before.the Clarets are naive and are too easily brushed aside.Three goals in as many minutes says everything.
From the games I have seen the clarets do not even give the opposition a game to remember.
I hate to say it because anything might happen but it is difficult to see where a win is going to come from.

After today's fiasco I feel it is time to put on the old team from last year that fought for 61 games to win through to the Premiership. Maybe they can pull something out of the bag and get us out of this rut we are in. It could work.. but I doubt that Brian Laws would even consider it.

I agree, sleepy Bikey out, I cant run Cort out. Nimani total rubbish out & Jenson catch the F**king ball out! Nugent I can make one good pass in a game out. Sorry I can't think of anything possitive except it was pleasing to see Pato score.

I could take defeat alot better if throughout the majority of our away games we were beaten by a bit of class. Not many teams we have played away have had to score goals by some classy moves or stunning sublime finishes. Look at the way villa scored there 1st,2nd,3rd,4th and 5th. We have given them the goals like most of the other 38 we let in previous. Something needs to change big time for the final run in. Portsmouth is no easy game at home and with the pace they have up front they will score against us they are a dangerous wounded animal fighting for there lives. Defence, what a joke.

Owen Coyle may go down in history as the man to manage two teams to be relegated in the same division in the same year. Remarkable.
.
I listen to his post-match comments and his interpretation of events is contrary to what actually happens on the pitch.
.
I appreciate he has to put a positive spin on things. But is it delusional?
.
He's done brilliantly for Burnley, getting em promoted, then jumping ship. What's that all about. There must be more to the story than is being said.
.
Gonna be tough for you Dingles and I don't know if you can survive.
.
If it's any consolation, we gave him plenty of 'stick' today. The man's a prat, but he's on the managerial circus wheel, making a living from whoever will pay him. Job's for the boys.

we were equal to villa for 55 minutes but as soon as their second went in heads dropped and we rolled over. when you take a good look at our squad, we don't have many premiership class players,we don't pay the wages to attract class acts.
it was always going to be a struggle, we can survive but it will require more bottle than shown today after 55 minutes. looking at the remaining fixtures i believe the team that finishes 4th from the bottom will do so with less than 39 points. so our home form could save us. hope so utc.

On current form, you will end be back where you belong before mid April. Those lucky 1-0 victories at the start are now distant memories of the dingle bandwagon.

We cant bank on home form. A few deafeats and or draws could spell the end. The defence yesterday was a joke and the lack of fight astounding.

I repeat these are not PL players in terms of quality. Whatever happens this season stay up or go down we need a big clear out and bring in some proven quality players.

Our main hope is some winnable home games and fact rivals are just as poor in terms of current form. We dont need 40 points : i reckon 36-37 might well be enough.

I cant wait for the clarets to be relegated, in a season when only two teams are going to be relegated as Portsmouth are already as good as relegated, I believe it has never been as easy to fight of relegation from the premiership.

The clarets are on 23 points with 12 games remaining, one win in the last 6 games is relegation form.

And if the clarets continue to collect 3 points every 6 games then we might as well turn off the lights and go home.

Championship here we come......

mr. morris accrington,
please refrain from being so foul mouthed and aggressive with your comments when replying to other peoples opinions.the so called experts in the sky studio all agreed that for 50 minutes we were equal to villa, so did the manager. i read all comments on here and to be honest yours are always tinted with panic and anger, not good at any age. i never did " dare to dream " once i realised the budget that coyle had i wrote on here stating that we would be odds on for relegation. however i will agree with you that it could have been more than 5-2, in fact i'm surprised that we've not conceded 7 or 8 in a match. as for the league 1 comment i disagree, we will go down but with a better squad than what we got promoted with. then we will see how good or not laws is.

philipmorris, Accrington says...
12:46pm Tue 23 Feb 10

OK. Fair comments. But the bottom line its another stuffing which creates great pressure for home games.

Re Champiomnship : im not so opitimistic. Lots of clubs can go on a slide and we are one of em.

philip thanks for the reply and i totally agree that the away form puts massive pressure on home games. personally i don't think we will survive, we are going to lose some more home games and our away form is a joke. i do worry a little about going on a slide and as you say we are capable of that. if we are relegated it will be interesting to see what transfer money laws is given. my main worry is our best players wanting to leave. i hope this is not the beginning of another 30 years in the wilderness. like you i saw the 70s team off dobbo, james, casper etc. great team i also saw the 60s team adamson, miller, jimmy mc. etc. a wonderful footballing team and to see this present team oll over like on sunday makes my blood boil.i may not agree with some of your stronger language but i would defend for ever your right to voice your opinion.all the best.

philipmorris, Accrington says...
12:50pm Wed 24 Feb 10

OK. Some good points well put. We agree on most things and simply expect better performances based on our upbringing as it were.

I totally agree :we might stay up based on home wins esp if other teams show poor form but its terrible to just write off away games. If you do that your beaten before you even step on the pitch : the likes of Noble, Kindon, James etc would never adop that attitude .
Ossy Claret

johnkit@tiscali.co.uk, shirebrook says...

spot on, we cannot write off away games and rely on home form. if our home form saves us the difference in statistics between home form and away form would baffle a scientist. all the best.
