FULL-TIME: Reading 1 Burnley 0

READING exacted revenge for their play-off semi-final defeat by dumping Burnley out of the FA Cup.

The game looked to be heading for a replay at Turf Moor with the Premier League visitors' chances restricted, while Reading squandered theirs.

But the Clarets were caught napping in the 88th minute when Andy Griffin's hopeful pass from the right touchline was snapped up by Gylfi Sigurdsson, and the young Icelandic stroked his finish into the bottom corner to secure a second consecutive top flight scalp for the managerless Championship strugglers.

The Royals have only won once in the league this season, but having drawn with Liverpool in the third round and caused an upset in the replay at Anfield, spirits have been lifted at the Madejski Stadium by the cup.

And their buoyancy spilled over into this game as they were the better side in a dire first half.

Grzegorz Rasiak conjured a host of half chances, while Sigurdsson also had a couple of sights of goal.

Chris Eagles produced Burnley's only effort on the stroke of half-time; an ambitious overhead kick that dropped wide of Adam Federici's goal.

The Clarets were better after the break, but struggled to make an impact with only one man up front.

Lone striker Steven Thompson was replaced by the fit-again Martin Paterson at half-time for the striker's first appearance since suffering knee cartilage damage in September.

He blazed a good chance over with about 15 minutes to go as Burnley enjoyed a spell of pressure.

But Reading found another gear in the closing stages, and Sigurdsson finished well to clinch a late, and deserved, win.

And your point is? Thats why everyone loves the FA Cup because you cant take anything for granted , ask Mr Ferguson. We didnt play a full strength side and yes we didnt really play well but it gave those guys who have been injured and on the fringes of the first team a chance to play and the manger to see what he has to work with. No one likes to see thier team lose but our priority has to be on staying in the premiership as i for one want the good footballing derbys between us and the hoofers because its good for the premiership and great for us fans and the banter that comes with it. Some of the comments today have been a little close to the knuckle.
.
It's only a game after all, and we're all football supporters.
.
An example of this is when i was walking home during the recent freezing weather. I came across a guy in a Burnley top, drowning in the frozen canal, so i saved him........as the screensaver on my phone.

I live in Oxfordshire and was able to see the Clarets at MK Dons and at Reading. They were lucky at MK and were lucky at Reading not to get a real thrashing.
The away system used by Laws left most of the team baffled and wondering what they were supposed to do.Lots of running but no ideas and when the opportunity arose no finishing ability.
There was no one on the field for the Clarets who could dictate the play.
If I hadn't been aware of the difference in league status I would have thought that the Clarets were the side at the bottom of the Championship.
From the evidence of the last two performances the Clarets will struggle to avoid the drop. They need a goal scorer and two quality defenders besides a playmaker but I can't see the board spending even if someone with proven ability was available
