BRETT Emerton's acrobatic volley has given Blackburn Rovers the half time lead against tournament hosts Sydney.

The Australian midfielder volleyed home Gael Givet's searching free kick on 37 minutes to give Rovers the deserved 1-0 lead.

After previous defeats to Rangers and AEK Athens, Rovers will be desperate to end the tour in style and have gone about it the right way.

Martin Olsson and El Hadji Diouf were particularly impressive down the left, as Rovers passed the ball around neatly and created numerous chances.

With Nikola Kalinic injured and Jason Roberts not in the squad, Allardyce has been forced to play Morten Gamst Pedersen as the lone striker in attack.

Pedersen has spurned numerous headed opportunities.
