Jansen warns Blackburn Rovers: Don't fail like we did

EWOOD Park favourite Matt Jansen has called for Blackburn Rovers’ class of 2010 to ‘keep their bottle’ after warning them not to let relegation history repeat itself.

Jansen was a member of the Rovers squad that suffered the Premier League drop in 1999, after a disastrous late season collapse, and he believes tomorrow’s visit of Hull is crucial if Sam Allardyce’s current squad are to banish fears of any similar slump.

Rovers do not figure highly on most people’s lists for relegation, as they currently sit in 12th position in the Premier League and seven points clear of the bottom three, but Jansen knows any talk of safety is premature.

Brian Kidd’s Rovers side were in a similar position back in 1999 but just one win and 11 points from their last 14 games saw them finish six points adrift of safety and relegated to the Championship.

Former Rovers striker Jansen, 32, remains confident Allardyce’s men will comfortably survive and can look forward to a brighter future but warns home games against Hull and Bolton in the next fortnight could yet prove pivotal.

He said: “It only takes a couple of games to be dragged right back into trouble and Rovers will know that going into these two very important home games.

“I think people thought we would be okay in 1998/99 but once our bad run started, the pressure just built up and built up and you just started thinking ‘where is the next win going to come from’.

“You are always looking at that forty point mark to ensure safety and until you get there, the nerves will be jangling.

"I actually think it will only take about 37 points to stay up, but you can’t know that.

“The problem is these games do become very nervous now.

"We found that back when we were relegated and I suppose results show we didn’t respond very well. It is hard to get yourselves out of a slump.”

Jansen though, who was at Ewood to see Rovers win over Fulham last month, has belief in Allardyce’s Rovers reign and is predicting some better times ahead.

He added: “Sam Allardyce has got a lot of very promising youngsters coming through into the first team and they will all be better for this experience come next season.

“You need experience at this time of the season and Rovers have that, but they have also some good young players which suggests the future is looking good.”

You are spot on Matty, I had to sit through that season and this brings back some bad memories, I sadly don't think Sam has the motivational skills needed at this time, maybe his heart problems have mellowed him. Speaking of some good youngsters coming through, they coudn't be any worse than half of what is on show.

Matt Jansen will always be a hero at Rovers, but I am not sure why Mr Cryer is trying to make a story here. We lost against SToke, granted, but we took 7 points out of the previous 9. Is he trying to stir up some nervousness and aprehension amongst the crowd, or is it just the usual drivel we come to expect?

Lol Jeppo :)

Well history cannot repeat itself as I'm not absconding to Portugal as of 1999 when I watched my beloved Rovers relegated in a youth hostel in Lisbon !!

A big differance under Kidd is that the team didn't want to play for Kidd or the shirt?

For all the SA detractors, I am confident that Rovers won't suffer the same fate as 1999. It won't be pretty, that I admit to but, we will live to fight another day.

3 points is an absolute must tomorrow eve & I do not give a chuff(at this time) how we get them & I hope for happier days ahead ?

Maybe its the fact we have an extremely difficult run in, terrible away form and an underachieving squad who struggle to score, defend and even play the most basic football.
If we don't take maximum points from our next 2 games, we will go down I think.

Matty scored a corker on his debut and then Kidd dropped him to the bench or played him on the wing - that's why we went down along with long term injuries to Gally and Sutty. Matty, Gally and Sutty - oh dream on for that qaulity up front!
.
This season we should be thankful there are some really bad teams around. Still does not justify the awful football though - there are better managers around for naxt season who can play football not hoofball.

Well said Matt! I agree with Morst that there are some bad teams around this season, but unfortunately on some days we are one of them!

Luckily we also have some good days, and we certainly need for two of those good days over the next two matches v Hull and Bolton.

If we dont win both then that wont kill-us off, but it sure will make it harder for us to get the total points we need to stay-up.

Both games are real 6 pointers!

It is in our own hands - if we pick up points off the teams below us we can forget about relegation and start working on how to get ourselves safe sooner next season.

.

If we don't get a decent return from the next two games alarm bells will once again be ringing.

.

Both Hull and Bolton will come for a draw and hope to play the kind of frustrating football that will get the Rovers crowd on the backs of the home side.

.

I expect Sam to play 4-4-2 with Roberts and Kalinic up front and with Dunny in midfield. I think that Sam has been saving Dunny for these two games.

.

Let's wait and see.

Kev, do you really expect two up front with Dunny in midfield? Not a chance. I hope you are right, but I think Dunn is still injured (for a change) and we have very little chance of 442. It will be more negative tactics, one up front with the inept Diouf behind him and hoping a hoof from Robbo or a Peds long throw drops for someone. Hope you're right and I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

.2009/10
This season 25 games (to date) and 28 points.
an average of 1.12 per game.

Progress?
.
Even if we win our next two winnable games we don't reach last season points to games ratio, and then we play liverpool.

If we had continued 2009 performance at 1.33 points per game - we would currently be on 33 points after 25 games and pretty much safe and in 9th postion. Just a thought.

Forever Rover, North London says...

Can't believe Andy Cryer has done a piece on the fear of relegation and some of you actually bite - obviously this is his agenda.
In the real world we are 3 games ahead of being sucked into trouble (with 13/14 to go) with some really dire teams behind us - I don't expect Portsmouth to miraculously win 5 more games than us (to just get their heads in front of us as we stand now), I don't expect Bolton, West Ham, Burnley, Wolves, Wigan or Hull to outperform us between now and the end of the season either.
Luckily we have some big teams to play when the pressure is really on them to stay in touch with the championship/4th place race and that is when they tend to come unstuck.
Granted we have been woeful away and as someone stated we've been making some real basic errors - but I think there have only been 2 teams to beat us at Ewood in 12 months, which is excellent by anyone's standards.
I think 36/37 points will be more than enough this year so 2 wins and a few draws would see us scrape through anyway. My target is to try to get 9th/10th which is achieveable and will give us a good base to improve on next season (if we stop simply laying down to die away from home and be tougher in midfield we would improve big time).

We’ve been saying for months now that we have a very difficult run of home games coming up at the business end of the season. Given our away record it looks unlikely that we will pick up any 3 pointers on the road so can only hope for a point here or there. Therefore the next two home games are MASSIVE in the context of Rovers season and will surely set the tone for the remainder of the season. Ideally we need 6 points from these two games but 4 is an absolute must. It’s difficult to estimate what a safe total will be this season as almost all the teams in the bottom half could come into it and are all beating each other but 40 should be enough.

The big disappointment for me and I guess all of you is that a team like Hull City who we play tonight can turn in some gritty but disciplined performances against two of the so called super teams on our league and earn a draw against Chelsea and beat Man City. Both those teams hammered us, so Rovers are going to have to be at their very best to win this one to night. In my view we need to have at least 34 points on the board by the time we go to Burnley in mid March and get something from that game.

Forgive me for being pessimistic but apart from the Birmingham City game the run of home games we have after the Burnley game is scary and we’ll struggle to pick any points up after that. Possibly Everton. With Aston Villa away our last game of the season we don’t want to be going there needing to get a result so two home wins now will get us to 34 points. Hopefully we will scrape up another 6 points out of our remaining home games against Birmingham and Everton and/or a couple of points on the road. It still looks to me like it’s going all the way to the wire and we’re going be in it, but hopefully looking down over our shoulder rather than relying on other teams.

Morst 31st ………Talking about lowest points tallies away from home. Our beloved Rovers could go into that record book yet this season. We’ve only got 5 so it would only take a Burnley fluke somewhere and they would be almost level with us. Not sure about the stats but 5pts must be down there and is currently one of Rovers lowest away totals.
