Blackburn Rovers midfielder Emerton to have scan today

BLACKBURN Rovers midfielder Brett Emerton will undergo a scan today to determine the extent of his groin injury.

The Australian limped off midway through the first-half of Blackburn’s disappointing 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City on Tuesday night.

He is now expected to be sidelined for Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur at Ewood Park.

But Sam Allardyce is hopeful that the 30-year-old - who has recently enjoyed an excellent run of form - will not miss any more matches over the busy festive period.

David Dunn’s groin problem ruled him out of four league and cup matches and the Rovers manager will be keeping his fingers crossed that Emerton will not be absent for a similar length of time.

“I don’t know what it was. He was feeling okay before the game, there were no problems,” said Allardyce.

“It is a shame, it was a cold night, two days after the Hull match.

"These things happen.”

But Allardyce is expected to be comforted by the return of Emerton’s fellow Australian - Vince Grella - for the visit of Harry Redknapp’s Spurs.

Grella was withdrawn during last weekend’s draw at Hull following a recurrence of a niggling thigh injury, but the midfielder will be available for selection after being rested at St Andrew’s.

There is further encouragement that the influential Dunn, who has not played since November 28, may also make a return.

"An excellent run of form," really! his form may be ok, but a run....give us a break! He's one of at least four players constantly wearing holes in the physio couch. It could be time to cut our losses on these wage draining players in Jan and bring in a couple of fit hungry players who are prepared to get involved in what is about to become (make no mistake)another fight for our premier survival!

Emerton, Reid, Dunny and now Grella - the only midfield quartet in history to spend more time on the physios couch than on the football field. Sad but true. All very good players when fit. No wonder we cant progress much in the prem...

I agree with spyderleg, it is time to cut-loose the apron strings on at least one or maybe two of them and release some wages and get someone fit and strong into the team. There must be some decent midfielders out there somewhere - I'll have a look around France and see what I can find!!!

3 things Spyderleg;
1) Dunny offers us something different as a midfield player...all our others are 'workmanlike' whereas Dunny can at least beat a man, or produce a killer pass. Injury prone as he may be, he is vital to our squad
2) its harder than you think to bring in players that are hungry and and are better than what we've got, particularly as we have a lot (check the ave age of the Brum starting eleven) of older lads in the squad, so any new signings need to be investments
3) of course, we will be looking over our shoulders, but we will not, my friend, be involved in a relegation fight, so you can relax a bit, enjoy your Christmas! xx

Sorry guys…Rovers are stuck with these injury prone players -until, either another team wants them (highly unlikely) or their contracts expire. Until then their bank balance will be bulging, compliments of BRFC. The club is paying now for previous bad decisions! Dunn is a fantastic player for Rovers -when fit! My words are beginning to come true- early in the season I said these players are so injure prone we’d be lucky if they made 20 appearances between them! Told ya so nah nah…

its easy to bring in players that are hungry - you only have to look at benni mccarthy - - looks like he was very hungry.

The fact that the win bonus`s that used to persuade "crocks" onto the park on a Saturday, are now insignificant in relation to the overall pay packet, will always mean that a light twinge will be four weeks out.

Performance related pay is the answer. Give them tens of thousands a week, but only if they play and actualy contribute.

We have pretty much a set of midfielders that either can't play or don't want to play. Hey ho, the joys of managing millionaire footballers.
.
Looking forward to Saturday!!!!!
