Blackburn Rovers interested in Aston Villa striker Heskey

BLACKBURN Rovers could be tempted into a January swoop for Aston Villa striker Emile Heskey as Sam Allardyce starts to plan for a 2010 without Franco Di Santo.

The Rovers boss has already conceded the Chelsea loanee is set for a Stamford Bridge recall, due to the African Nations Cup and the Blues’ current transfer embargo, and will weigh up whether fresh blood is needed if the Argentine departs.

Rovers hierarchy though have stressed Di Santo’s return is still far from inevitable, with Chelsea’s FIFA appeal still to be heard, and could use Saturday’s trip to Stamford Bridge to discuss the youngster’s future with their London counterparts.

Allardyce knows though he can’t afford to not plan for the worst and will spend the next couple of months deciding whether he will need extra firepower come the new year.

Heskey’s recent admission that he needs first team football to guarantee his World Cup inclusion for England this summer has alerted Rovers though, along with several Premier League rivals, as they track his situation with interest.

No official interest has been made but sources close to Rovers and the player himself indicate a move to Ewood Park would not be out of the question - although the Villa striker was quick to distance himself from any unrest in the Midlands.

Any move for Heskey, or anyone else, would probably need another departure as well as Di Santo to free up the necessary funds, especially with Dunn’s exploits in a free role leaving Rovers playing just one striker.

Out of favour Jason Roberts is likely to be given the chance at Chelsea in the lone striker role on Saturday and if he, or Nikola Kalinic or Benni McCarthy, can stake their claim before the turn of the year any transfer market may yet be deemed unnecessary.

Di Santo revealed in the Lancashire Telegraph yesterday he would be happy to stay at Ewood Park but, with Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou playing for the Ivory Coast in January’s African Nations Cup, Chelsea could need the youngster back.

Premier League rules would rule out any subsequent Rovers return with the club’s final hope apparently resting on Chelsea successfully appealing the transfer fan imposed by FIFA.

Allardyce said: “It seems unlikely we will be able to keep Franco past January. We will have to decide whether we go with what we have got or enter the market again.”

On the few occasions I’ve seen Di Santo he’s been really impressive -eager runs -quick -good understanding with other players, holds the ball up well and most impressively lays the ball off well-all the attributes our other striker sadly lack-His qualities are the reason Chelsea paid 4m for a young unknown from Audax Italian (our Chilean feeder club!) Chelsea’s scouts have obviously done their business thoroughly in spotting this young lad (Rovers take note before you buy, be sure! -one Nikola Kalinic) Being only 20, Chelsea see his best years ahead of him, realising that he’s one for the future-hence the reason for shipping him out on loan- my guess is they intended to give him a full season at Ewood renewing his initial 6 month period. That may now be on the backburner because of the transfer embargo & also the exodus of Chelsea players on international duties in the winter. The whole point of loaning him to Rovers was to give him Premier league experience which at the beginning of the season couldn’t be guaranteed at Chelsea.
.
Its still early to say weather he’ll be a success in the Premier league, after all he’s only played 13 games with 9 of those being in the substitute role, coming on for a few minutes -In those appearances he’s scored one goal and had two assists, not really setting the league alight! Hopefully the future is bright for the young lad -but we shouldn’t expect too much, remember Derbyshire coming on the scene and showing so much promise!

.
Heskey -that’s all we need -another striker that can’t score goals. Heskey’s job in the England team is to be a foil to the other players -Rooney -Lampard - Gerrard -Walcot all players with proven scoring records -In the Rovers team we need a goal scorer not nother support player!

I think you get mixed up between this site and the paper. The Heskey story is in today's Telegraph paper, which was published last night, so it's more likely the nationals copy the Telegraph

Think Heskey will be looking for a team in the top half of the Premiership.
A relegation battle isn't going to help his England ambitions.
Does fit Sam's parameters though I'll admit : Well over 6 foot, ideal for a long ball game !

And what the hell do we want with that donkey Heskey anyway???

MJ Rover, Blackburn says...

I agree with Marghen as regards Heskey. He has never been an out-and-out goalscorer, which is still what we need to find. His role for England works well, but unfortunately we don't have the likes of Gerrard, Rooney or Lampard to feed off him.

He could work at Rovers as part of a front two, possibly with di Santo (or Kallinic, if we ever see him!) or maybe even McCarthy, but since Allardyce seems happy playing one up at the moment, I doubt we'll move for him (though he would be a better version of Roberts).

Got to have some patience and keep faith with young Kalinic. By the rovers standards they've laid out a lot of money on him so you've got to think the raw materials are there to be worked with ... should see him get a full 90 min in the peterborough game and will be a better yard stick to judge his development rather than he aint been seen for 3 weeks and were on about replacing a loan striker when he returns

BluesBros, Blackburn says...

If Di-Santo goes back to Chelsea which looks likely then I think we need to make use of what we have got. The way forward is not buying tired hasbeen’s particularly striker’s. We’ve already got two on the books now so we don’t want another. Sam needs to get the best out of Roberts and McCarthy if that’s possible. Roberts misses more that he scores and McCarthy plays when HE wants to. McCarthy’s not a loan striker thou and he needs to play off someone. Roberts……. Well enough said.
