Clayton was my inspiration, says Blackburn Rovers advisor

AS Shebby Singh slid Ronnie Clayton’s autobiography across the desk to cite it as his footballing inspiration, the immediate thought is of a painful attempt to ingratiate himself with an angry Blackburn public.

After all, who would really believe that a Malaysian 11-year-old would fall in love with football due to reading a book about a footballer he had never heard of before. And then end up running that club some 40 years later?

The phrase ‘oldest trick in the book’ springs to mind and I can already imagine the cynical response of hoardes of Rovers fans as they read these words.

It has to be pointed out then that ‘Shebby’ was on the record hailing Ewood Park legend Clayton as his inspiration in 2009 – long before Blackburn Rovers and Venky’s had ever crossed paths.

Proof then that the former Malaysian international and new ‘global advisor’ at Ewood Park isn’t just attempting to win favour and that Blackburn Rovers has in fact played a huge part in his life.

He said: “English football shaped my life, shaped my career, and for the last 15 years I think I have been most critical of English football because I think you should have won a World Cup already since the introduction of the Premier League.

“The autobiography about Ronnie Clayton: ‘A slave to soccer’ was my inspiration. I read this book when I was 11 years old. It left an impression on me, all I wanted to do for the rest of my life was to be a footballer. That is it.

“I think I have achieved a lot of what Ronnie achieved in this book.

“As an 11 year old reading a book that you thought was a story book and then realise it is a true story. This book is awesome. It is about being a professional footballer, the big games, the big crowds. Playing for the national team.

“This is simply wonderful and that was it from 11 years old I just wanted to play football.”

It may sound a romantic fairy tale to football outsiders but, for most Rovers supporters, it is what he can bring to the club that really matters.

Fans are already asking what credentials Singh has to be running a Premier League football club because, make no mistake, that is what he has been brought in to do.

After a detailed look at Singh’s life story the answer doesn’t exactly spring to mind either. Playing the game in and for Malaysia, while spending the last decade as a pundit for Asian TV, isn’t the normal route to take for football club supremos.

“I am a Malaysian, born in Malaysia and brought up in Malaysia,” said Singh. “I started my football career in Malaysia and I played for 18 years – from being an amateur, to semi professional, to professional. I have been through the mill.

“From 1982 to 1991 I played for my country. I have very, very fond memories and some very important people in English football helped to shape my career.

“One of my earliest coaches in 1983, playing for the national team, was Frank Lord. Winning the 1989 South East Asia gold medal with Trevor Hartley was brilliant as well. Trevor was in a class of his own.

“I also worked for a short spell with Keith Burkinshaw during a pre season break in 1991. Keith came to Malaysia at a request of the Sultan. I worked with him for two months.

“Trevor Brooking was once my team mate. I don’t know if he will remember but if you meet him remind him. It was at Kuala Lumpur in about 1986 or 1987. He guested for Kuala Lumpur.

“I very much enjoyed my time as a pundit. From day one as a footballer I was considered rebellious. I had my own thoughts and ideas about how we should play.

“I am a student of the game and am very, very passionate about football and like talking about it. I like innovative football and the way football has evolved has just been amazing.”

The now 51-year-old may be a new name for the majority of Rovers fans but he had been combining his media duties with working for Venky’s for the past 12 months as head of football development in Asia.

He said: “It is surreal now that I actually sit here and am going to run the club. This is really weird. For me it was wow, it was coming back full circle.

“Now one year on it gets weirder. It is like a story.

“In the last September when I visited Ewood I met Mrs Clayton and I had to tell her my story and when I told her my story she was in tears.

“It is just a pity. If things had happened one year earlier I would have met Ronnie himself.”

If Singh was not aware of the size of the challenge on his hands when he arrived in England last week, you can be assured he is now.

We are talking about a club divided. A club whose supporters have lost all faith in owners Venky’s and who are furious at their decision to stick with boss Steve Kean.

Singh’s appointment has understandably done little to ease the unrest and he is the first to admit it will be a ‘long battle’ to turn things around.

“The past is the past,” he said. “When I recall the past, the past is about that book. When you talk about the past you want to remember 1995 and the Premier League win.

“So when we talk about the past, we talk about the glory of the past rather than the antagonism of the past. Then there is a lot of unnecessary emotions wasted from all side and eventually it affects everyone. The club as a whole is the loser. I don’t want that.

“It is an absolute necessity we get back to the Premier League, it is the aim. I think we can not put undue pressure on ourselves though. Timelines would do that and raise the hope and expectations.

“There have to be expectations but silent expectations. You have to build a spirit, build a determination first, rather than start shouting from the rooftops because that can work against you.

“It is exhilarating for me personally. I know when I was given the job and my friends in Singapore and Malaysia said ‘are you mad?’ I replied ‘I have always been mad’.

“It is a challenge. Fully explore yourself. No one said life was easy. I never shirk a challenge and it is not to prove anything to anyone. It exploring what I can do.

“I will call a spade a spade. I don’t know if I am honestly brutal or brutally honest but that is the way I have always been."

Exactly, he is not just being watched by the rovers fans but all fans everywhere, if it goes peared shaped publically this time, he'll never work again for any respectable outfit, just like kean is going to get his come uppins soon, time is running short baldy and your short comings will come to a point where all rovers fans hope the owners will see sense or corruption is uncovered....!

the past is the past...what is all this tosh.
.
the past is the premiership, the past is numerous play-offs under don mackay and bobby saxton, the past is micky speight breaking the net with thunderbolts, the past is getting "coined" at maine road, the past is getting chased round stanley park by idiotic toffees, the past is bristol rovers at eastgate - last game of the season, the past is getting relegated under iley/pickering, the past is losing loads of managers sparky, souness, smith, lee, furphy, the past is plymouth at home and shrewsbury away. the past is tony field and roger jones, the past is turf moor on boxing day 1977.
.
i can't go back much before 1972 - but i know about the past. never saw clayton or douglas play - but i did go to that testimonial game england XI versus a city/liverpool XI.....but i can't help but feel that this sob story is a cheap attempt to tug on the heartstrings of gullible rovers supporters by bringing ronnie clayton's name into it...here's a challenge mr singh - get bryan douglas to comment on your snake-oil salesman blarney and if he thinks your the genuine article then i will eat my hat.
.
i know that we have complained about no communication for months and now this guy is shouting from the highest steeple. trouble is empty vessels make the loudest noise.
.
he is going to cal a spade a spade is he??? well didn't the spades that were written/expressed by williams, finn, hunt lead to their dismissal. it seems to me that the only way to keep your job for any length of time is to call a spade a positive set of results which shows that we are moving in the right direction and no way will we go down.
.
didn't the LT's very own andy cryer get lamabasted by our "brilliant manager" for calling a spade a spade and not indulging lord haw haw in his relentless attempts to mimic mr micawber.
.
if shebby is so keen to get into the psyche of blackburn rovers he needs to sit down and talk to the staff at ewood (NOT THE PLAYERS) and ask them without fear of being fired about the last 20 months and how they think they have been treated, he needs to speak to supporters (and to be honest i don't care if its the fans forum, brag, brist etc etc) but more importantly he needs to listen and then do something about it. He must not do an all in the garden is rosy communication back to his paymasters - he must be honest......honesty is a virtue which has been sadly lacking in the last 20 months at ewood from our owners, our manager and some of our players. do that and make some decent actions and maybe then we might start believing you.....but you have a lot of work to do mr singh to establish the merest scintilla of credibility.
.
like virtually everyone, except the incredibly naive, i despair and deplore everything about blackburn rovers at the moment. we are adrift...we have become a ghost club.

My favourite line in this story is the following one....“Trevor Brooking was once my team mate. I don’t know if he will remember but if you meet him remind him. It was at Kuala Lumpur in about 1986 or 1987. He guested for Kuala Lumpur."

So in other words Trevor Brooking once played in a Mickey Mouse charity match in Kuala Lumpur that our Shabby also happened to be playing in! Hardly the kind of credentials that warrant being handed the top job at a professional football club. I once played in a charity five-a-side tournament with Alan Kennedy (who was well into his 40s at that point) so I guess I should put myself forwards for the role of chairman then. Why do we need a global adviser anyway? We are playing in the Championship next season, not the Champions League, so no-one outside of East Lancashire will give a monkey's about us anyway...

My dad once bought a suite from that shop Simon Garner had in Cherry Tree. I once had a p155 next to David Speedie in the old 100 Club toilet at Ewood. My mum had her picture taken with Shearer. I once spoke to Nicky Reid. I was given a pair of Alan Irvines old Diadora boots. Surely I am therefore also qualified to be Rovers' new global advisor? Am I mad? Yes. Very. Livid infact. Livid at those Venkys shysters for employing another lying, manipulating, bull5hitting, asset stripping, propaganda merchant, spin-doctor who after 2 weeks in the job has managed to dig the already gigantic meteorite size hole even deeper.

The very fact that this germ dares mention the legend that is Ronnie Clayton in this latest desperate attempt to win the fans over is diabolical.

I advise Mr Shebby Singh to focus on something that perhaps could enlighten BRFC fans.

How are the legal actions being taken by Sam Allardyce and Ryan Nelsen against BRFC progressing?

How much does Mr Singh think this will cost the club?

How much will it cost the club for Steve Kean's personal defence against the action being taken against him by Sam Allardyce?

What does Mr Singh intend to do about the outrageous running of Ewood on matchdays; and will he be willing to openly 'advise' the fans on his views of how he sees the management of the club?

If Shebby wants to endear himself to Rovers fans and convince them that he brings something different to the table, he needs to sack Kean as a matter of urgency and show Anderson the road back to London. Then we may start to believe that his intentions towards our club are honourable. The ball is in your court Shebby.

Its hardly surprising Givet is it given their record? They go from one catastrophe to another. Do you honestly think that unless we gain promotion at the first attempt and re-establish ourselves in the Premier League that anyone is ever going to even warm to them, let alone support them. This isn't about conspiracy theories, it's about fact and the facts are there for all to see. They bought into a football club that was run like a well oiled swiss watch and systematically destroyed it by a multitude of abysmal decisions which has ended in relegation. Unfortunately for them they seem to have made another monumental ****-up in appointing Singh, who has clearly impressed them by talking the talk, exactly as Kean did and still does. What Venkys clearly fail to recognise is that we as fans of football and more importantly Rovers, see right through the utter bull5hit. In my opinion Singh has just replaced Kean as head bul5hitter. If they need people to come and 'help' them then we really are in a very sorry state. They need to help themselves and sack Kean and replace him with a proper manager.

So Shabby claims Ronnie Clayton was his life's inspiration? With a job title like "Global Adviser" I would have expected his inspiration to have been Henry Kissinger. Pompous little git! (Shabby not Henry). AND he thinks he has achieved a lot of what Ronnie did! Well, you little runt Ronnie Clayton could play football for a start, try matching that. No wonder Mrs. Clayton was in tears with you forcing your unwanted and odious company on her. She was probably weeping over how low Rovers had sunk to have you in charge, you slimy little fakir.
All this posturing about life's inspiration figures makes one wonder who Steve Kean's life inspiration was? I am really lost for an answer to that one!

I think that knowing full well how Rovers fans feel about Kean and Venky's that his interview was quite outspoken. No shrinking violet this one.

If his words are genuine (and we will take an awful lot of convincing based on previous words from Venkys staff) then we can expect some changes this season in the way the club interacts/communicat
es with the fans.

Will it be what we all asked for - proper communication about what is happening with our club - or will it just be words and more words without sense or meaning. Early days folks.

Our Shebby needs to do a lot of work to get anyone onside....but as we constantly tell our owners just one action now will make for one big step in the right direction - get Kean out. Now.

If you read the article, Singh was quoted as saying Ronnie Clayton was his inspiration, back in 2009.

My own opinion, subject to abuse from those who disagree, is to give him a chance.

At last, some form of communication is coming from the club, which is at least a start. Whether it will continue remains to be seen, however it is one step in the right direction.
I did read the article, and that is NOT the point of my contention.

I'm not addressing whether he was inspired by Clayton, or when, but rather that the statement I quoted was a poor choice in order to ingratiate himself to Rovers fans.

I agree with you that I am willing to also give him a chance, but Venky's reign has been marred by this sort of thing: False modesty masking unbelievable hubris.

It's going to take a hell of a long time to repair a lot of hurt and damage.

They had the chance to repair most of this by making a SINGLE mission statement in the sacking of Kean. Instead they ignored a mountain of compelling evidence and stone-walled every fan who begged them for change.

Their dithering and colossal incompetence has driven our trust in them so far into deficit that it's going to take Mr. Singh and co a sea change in policy to win back a fan base who've been repeatedly kicked in the teeth.

I do wish him luck, however. I don't envy him; he has a mountain to climb.

There comes a point when a protest runs the risk of destroying the club completely: whilst its not ideal, maybe the best idea is to give them the money to do what they claim to be about to do.

I once played against the Manchester All Stars at Chorley FC (which featured Paul Mariner (40 at the time)) and I just happen to live in Michael Robinson's old house. I also just happen to be a 5th generation Rovers supporter. Surely this means I should be in the thoughts of the owners for their next ludicrous appointment.

All who agree with above out. Buy a season ticket and you are complicit, buy a f*cking hot dog and you are propping them up. Hit them in the pocket and force their hand, they will have to sell in order to not lose money.

Oppose what your enemies support (Kean) and support what your enemies oppose (Dissenting alternative opinion).
WELL SAID!!!!

the past is the premiership, the past is numerous play-offs under don mackay and bobby saxton, the past is micky speight breaking the net with thunderbolts, the past is getting "coined" at maine road, the past is getting chased round stanley park by idiotic toffees, the past is bristol rovers at eastgate - last game of the season, the past is getting relegated under iley/pickering, the past is losing loads of managers sparky, souness, smith, lee, furphy, the past is plymouth at home and shrewsbury away. the past is tony field and roger jones, the past is turf moor on boxing day 1977.

i can't go back much before 1972 - but i know about the past. never saw clayton or douglas play - but i did go to that testimonial game england XI versus a city/liverpool XI.....but i can't help but feel that this sob story is a cheap attempt to tug on the heartstrings of gullible rovers supporters by bringing ronnie clayton's name into it...here's a challenge mr singh - get bryan douglas to comment on your snake-oil salesman blarney and if he thinks your the genuine article then i will eat my hat.

i know that we have complained about no communication for months and now this guy is shouting from the highest steeple. trouble is empty vessels make the loudest noise.

he is going to cal a spade a spade is he??? well didn't the spades that were written/expressed by williams, finn, hunt lead to their dismissal. it seems to me that the only way to keep your job for any length of time is to call a spade a positive set of results which shows that we are moving in the right direction and no way will we go down.
.
didn't the LT's very own andy cryer get lamabasted by our "brilliant manager" for calling a spade a spade and not indulging lord haw haw in his relentless attempts to mimic mr micawber.

if shebby is so keen to get into the psyche of blackburn rovers he needs to sit down and talk to the staff at ewood (NOT THE PLAYERS) and ask them without fear of being fired about the last 20 months and how they think they have been treated, he needs to speak to supporters (and to be honest i don't care if its the fans forum, brag, brist etc etc) but more importantly he needs to listen and then do something about it.
What a great post, I did see Ronnie and Brian play I was at West Ham on boxing day 1963 for our 8-2 win and at home a few days later for our 3-1 defeat by the same time. The train journeys back from London with the players, the 3-3 draw in the cup at Turd Moor after going 3-0 down then winning the reply 2-0 aet, that was the past not last seasons garbage, not Keans weasel words, or indians speaking with fork tongues. If this guy had any conviction about doing the job the first thing he should have done was sack Kean, because that's the only way forward
Didn't Shabby come off the bench to score the 8th?

Alienated from the club. Feel disconnected. Clinging on to my interest until vile lying toad Kean leaves. Feel nothing about Goodwillie or Murphy until he has gone.
Wrote to Singh yesterday, a considered and polite letter explaining that many of us will not be back until he sacks Kean. Asking him why he is still there and why he has changed his own mind on the toad's abilities. Do not expect a reply but if I do I shall let you know.
DanBlackburn, I have done exactly the same, I also asked him to explain why our new COMMUNICATIONS guru has not replied to the 4 letters I have sent him, perhaps we should also ask to see sight of the 500 letters and e.mails that the club receive daily in support of the drunkard?
