Blackpool boss Ian Holloway on Rovers radar

Ian Holloway Ian Holloway

BLACKBURN Rovers are mulling over making an audacious approach for Blackpool boss Ian Holloway – but the Seasiders would fight tooth and nail to keep their man at Bloom-field Road.

As the prospect of luring Shebby Singh’s favoured can-didate Tim Sherwood to Ewood Park continues to look unlikely, with Spurs desperate to keep him on their coaching staff, Holloway has emerged on the radar as a potential alternative.

The Bristolian and Sherwood are understood to be only two of a number of names on Rovers’ shortlist, but the former is believed to be the preferred choice of sections of the club’s hierarchy.

Holloway is not the unan-imous favourite though within the club as exploratory moves are still being made in an attempt to narrow down the short list, with the interviewing stage still yet to start.

Rovers have yet to make any other official approaches to clubs since an initial move to talk to Sherwood was knocked back by Spurs two weeks ago, with it looking increasingly likely caretaker boss Eric Black will be at the helm for Saturday’s trip to Derby County.

Going after Holloway would prove a popular move among sections of the Ewood Park faithful, with the Blackpool boss topping the Lancashire Telegraph’s readers poll with 20 per cent of the vote almost a fortnight ago.

But Seasiders chairman Karl Oyston will be determined to hang on to the man who transformed his club’s fortunes on a shoestring budget and sources close to him believe he would deny Rovers permission to speak to Holloway – if an approach was to be made.

Holloway is on a 12-month rolling contract and is treated as Blackpool's 'crown jewels' and it is understood he would have to attempt to force a move for it to happen.

The 49-year-old was linked with the job when Sam Allardyce was sacked at the start of Venky's reign and he quickly dismissed it as he also hit out at Rovers' poultry giant owners.

He said in December 2010: “I know I've got a few chickens but it is ridiculous to link me with that. It is absolute rubbish.”

“It seems an absolute load of nonsense (Allardyce's sacking), but they own the club, they can do what they like and they have obviously done it,'' Holloway said.

"For me, they obviously don't know what football is about because a good manager like that with a great track record, and where they are in the league, it is not easy. Not everyone can do it and I hope it doesn't backfire on them.

"Sam has a proven track record of how he does things. Good luck to them, that's all I'd like to say. None of it makes sense, but maybe football doesn't.''

Holloway has grown increasingly frustrated at a lack of funds available at Blackpool though and, despite buying a new property on the Fylde Coast , is believed to be ready to move on if the right job is made available.

I'm realistic about where we are, but I want to keep moving forward,' he said. 'I'm even more determined to be a success.

'There's something special about this club, it seems to just fit me perfectly.

'I'll keep going, I believe in what we are doing, and we won't stop working hard. If we keep doing that, who knows where we'll end up."

Good man , a bit more presence on the touchline than Laurel and Hardy who we have now, he has just bought a house in Lytham , the downside is Holloway has a agreement on his contract that he gets 10% of the profit on a player he brought to the club , and with Tom Ince looking to be off to Man Utd in January for between 6/8 million ,he could lose 800,000 pounds if he jumps ship now.

I suppose Rovers could offer him a welcome golden parachute payment to compensate , I hope he has his own coaching staff , otherwise the "coaching team" we have right now will drag him down to their level..

Blackpool suits Holloway and he should stay there....why go for him (and have to cough up compensation) when Mick McCarthy is available for nothing and has 2 promotions to Holloway's one under his belt?? Makes no sense. Clearly the small-time idiots involved in the decision-making have to go for someone they know, rather than the stand out candidates. Probably haven't the balls to approach someone they don't know personally.

I would also echo the name of Mick McCarthy, due to the decent style of football he plays (with two out and out wingers) and he prepares a solid defence too.

In addition he knows what it takes to get up from this division.

Granted he comes witha swift releagtion from the premier division too, but that can be rectified, if he is provided with cash to keep us up.

Holloway is a top choice. But he is a man who speaks his mind - aka comments on BFS sacking. I think I remember at the time this forum being full of 'you dont know what you are talking about Holloway' type comments.

Seems he did.

I dont think Venkys will pay compo when there are freebie choices on the menu.

Shame because he would galvanise the club.
And us supporters would at least be kept in the picture because he tells it like it is .... with little diplomacy..... another reason Venkys would shy away.

Not entirely sure Holloways success will continue away from Blackpool. A lot of managers (Coyle) thrive at one club and fail at others. I can't understand why Clemente and Schuster arn't the main links, these are world class managers offering (apparently) to take the job and were discussing whos best from Shearer, Sherwood and Holloway? Somethings wrong.

I just cannot believe we are still in limbo. Holloway now mentioned ... a great choice but why has it taken 17 days to get to this position. This lot could not make a decision on football to save their lives. Clearly they must be better sticking to chicken farming.

I still fear they will go with the cheap option and appoint Black...not that i have anything against him...i just believe we need a fresh approach but that may be too much for Venkys....they really are totally clueless.

Sherwood not the man and why would Holloway want to join the 'circus of clowns'. One thing for certain unless the idiotic Managers at Ewood get their act together and appoint a Manager with Experience/Stature the 'gates' will start to fall again as the fans are becoming increasingly concerned in respect of tactics being used to find a new Manager - as usual total confusion.

Holloway is a good manager but he has a tendency towards clown-ism, and although I'd like a more outspoken manager at the helm, I can envisage the venkys/singh at loggerheads with Holloway time and again. Let's take a chance...Solskjaer could be great and it seems we are allowing him to slip through our fingers down the m61 to the reebok. Roy Keane, Henrik Larsson, Henning Berg, Simon Grayson and I also haven't ruled out the return of Shearer.

No chance of us getting an experienced manager whatsover in my opinion. They just wouldn't want to be any part of the circus that is Rovers under these muppets.

3 to get your money on:

Black
Shearer
Flitcroft

Very very sad, but most of us said before "IF they ever did get rid of Kean would any real experienced manager take on the job?" The answer is no. The only option is an ex player wanting to get into managment or another number 2 or manager from the lower leagues.

The above option will not get us anywhere near the play offs and could potentially see us in another relegation dog fight.

The downward spiral continues I'm afraid. I hope I'm wrong.

This is just another "might be popular with the supporters" name dreamt up, in a vain attempt to placate the fans, before they throw in some unheard of no mark who'll wind supporters up from the start.
I'd love to see Holloway here, just for the spirit&passion he shows, but I doubt very much it'll happen because he has passed comment on Sam A's sacking, and has very forthright opinions on most things. He certainly doesn't tick the "I'm a brown nosed , @rselicking, Yes Man" box that will be on the application form sent out by the club under these owners.
All that said, most people involved in football don't know the meaning of loyalty so if Rovers offer a big enough wedge, I'm sure he'll tell 10-bob millionaire Oyston that its time for the challenge of a big club and its been nice knowing you.
House in Lytham, sets the alarm bells ringing though, too close to that thieving, lie-ridden, useless 5cumbag Hendry.
Like other posters have said if by a small miracle he can't resist the smell of the cash&takes the short trip down the M55, I hope he is allowed to manage properly and get his own coaches in. He only has eyes for Sherwood and Spurs are reluctant to let him go. That's why it's taking so long. If it is Sherwood, he's not listening to the majority of the supporters, but what's new there. They got themselves in this mess without any help from the fans.

I quite agree some managers maybe most are suited to a particular club as are some players because everything just gells, they then get a inflated ego and think they are invincible, for example,Coyle at Burnley,Hughes at rovers, the bloke now at Liverpool who's not breaking any pots the list goes on,bloody hell shaggy we just need a decent no frills manager and FITNESS coach who can kick this rag bag set of players into shape and give them a purpose in life, the longer this takes I fear an appointment of Mr Black especially if by some quirk of fate he gets a result at Derby, this farce just goes on and on,it's a disgrace to the name of the Rovers.

Let's look at the facts, there are clearly available and employed managers who are interested, whether seriously or just in an initial conversation but yet it has been 17 days since SK left? Shebby says these things take time, why? Yes we don't want to rush into a decision but that doesn't mean we have to delay even gathering information/intervie

It is a cert that Bolton and the Dingles will hire before us, I am just hoping the news that OGS turned down the chance to talk to Gartside is a hint he may be more interested in us? God I hope so or very quickly people are going to be hoping for a loss on Saturday to keep Black away from the managers office.

Interesting - my Dad spoke to some Wolves fans after the last game and they weren't impressed with McCarthy at all. That last relegation season for them made their minds up.

Holloway would be a breath of fresh air but 1) I can't see him coming to Rovers, 2) does he have a plan B (as one poster on here has previously questioned) aside from all-out attack ?

1:13pm Mon 15 Oct 12

Holloway only has to answer to Oyston at Blackpool. He's a good fit there. So why would he want to come to Rovers where he would have to answer to a middleman as well as the owners?

Shebby is Global Advisor (not chairman) and has said that his remit is to get Rovers promoted this season. It follows, therefore, that HE WILL NOT AND INDEED CANNOT ALLOW A MANAGER TO HAVE FULL CONTROL OF FOOTBALLING MATTERS AT ROVERS. If he did, Shebby would no longer be able to directly influence the direction of the club. And he would, in effect, be handing over his Global Advisor remit.

IMHO, no manager worth his salt will want his every daily decision scrutinised by someone with the power to say "Don't do that. Do something else." Normally the owners are not so intrusive and allow the manager to take care of all footballing matters until such time as results don't match their expectations. But the Global Advisor, even if Shebby says he is only there to support the manager, can be a pain in the arse and intervene at any time at all.

I cannot see anybody but a desperate yes-man taking on such a manager's role. Even yes-man Kean didn't want it. So when Shebby says they are compiling a shortlist of the right 'type' of manager, I think that 'type' has got to be someone who will accept Shebby's power to be able to override or suggest otherwise at any time.

Venky's have allowed someone with no practical experience of English league football to run things. This is no better than JA running things. I can see manager contract negotiations dragging on for months and months because no manager with any self-respect or common sense will want to work in that kind of a setup. I hope I am wrong but things are increasingly looking Black.

I have said it before on here though that if Black decides he wants to throw his name in the hat, he knows it will only take a couple more of the dreadful performances like against Wolves and he will have the fans against him within weeks. He wouldn't want that, nor has he the down right disregard for the supporters or blatant 'in denial' attitude as the woeful liar Steve Kean. I would be happy to see Holloway as manger but he had/has nothing to lose at Blackpool. Rovers are a different kettle of fish.

For me Black or Hendry still being at the club goes back to the bad old days of further boycotts by the fans and we DON'T want that again.

it will take them to the end of the season to narrow down the shortlist.leaving us with black as care taker.then they will say eric has done a magnificant job in keeping us up and annoit him boss. tongue in cheek, but not even an interview yet! come on, these points dropped are vital. i am not bothered if the manager is popular, dont care if this fan or that fan thinks he is bad or if hes got other teams relegated from the prem. i just want a manager who will get us there in the first place. which is looking less likely with every week gone without one. so all the fans out there, what would you rather have, being in the prem in the first place or dithering in the championship, like we are now.

Can't say I'm surprised. He's already turned Villa down, so why would he want to work in the championship under Venkys. He's no links with Rovers, so why would he want the job? At least that narrows the shortlist down. Plays into their hands really. Wait until everyones ruled themselves out leaving just Eric Black . It's coming a mile off.

If Rovers fans are expecting a Manager with an unblemished track record there are so few around and in any case Ewood would not be their favoured port of call - be realistic

Add to this the Venkys deliberations and you get what you see - indecision continuing unabated.

If the Black Hendry combination remains in situ then fans will rightly take it no change from Venkys and the protests will start up all over again.

Just when you think it cant get any worse you wake up and find it just has

The sight of that pasty faced blonde haired Scottish alecan fraudster sat in the dugout , doing fu.ck all every game is really winding me up
Walshy2866,
You should have been in that pub in Lytham last night, a pub the HENDRY frequents, one of his Scottish pals was drunk and mouthing off, he said " Colin knows Blackie`s nae good as a manager, but Colin`s only saying good things aboot him cos he knows he`ll no last long as a manager , and Colin will be next in line fur the job '

Real honesty and loyalty there then , it`s good to see HENDRY living up to his reputation.

I agree. If Venkys etc do not read this newspaper, then as far as they are concerned they have at least 13000 people who support their choice of manager. And as far as they are concerned there are only 4000 who were staying away. Why were they staying away? Kean. So if more than 13000 turn up, they will see it as success and solution to the problem. 13000+ people voting with their feet to support whatever Venkys do - they are probably dead chuffed!

A lot of people are against McCarthy but he got Wolves and Sunderland up and kept Wolves up for 2 seasons without any backing from the owners, so I prefer not to judge him on the issue of Wolves relegation. Nobody ever mentions Coleman and Bell. Long shots yes, no experience at the top level granted but 12 years of football miracles, apart from Rochdale. (3 promotions and league status) Would this be too much of a gamble? Probably. OGS ruling himself out, I can only see McCarthy being the best option at the moment.

Dreaming of 'winning us'? Are you some sort of court jester proud burnley lad? You're getting all confused again. We don't have to dream about 'winning' you as you put it. That's because we 'win' you every time we play you. Heaven help us if Bonley do ever 'win' Rovers. The town would have a annual bank holiday in honor. You bunch of scrubbers. Keep on posting pbl, I need a good laugh.
Proud Bonleh Lad is my favourite dingle as well.

His posts never fail to bring a smile to my face. The unique mangling of the English language combined with the usual Bonleh delusional, chip on shoulder bitterness.

Classic.

Problem is, I don't think he dare say anything without the nod from Venkys, and they say nothing ! ! !
We don't have a Director of Communications do we? I thought he only had the title for about a fortnight before being "promoted" to Operations Director.

Remember when he was asked what his new job entailed? He said it was "to direct operations".

Thank god he cleared that up.

I agree on the one club man theory. Holloway just seems to "fit" at Blackpool. I worry, like you say, he would fail miserably anywhere else.

In fact, McCarthy would be a safer bet (although I wouldn't be overly happy if we got him).

As for Clemente and Schuster; why are they suddenly touting themselves around the Championship? Is there something we should know?

If they are (still) that good, why have they not been seen for years?

OGS still seems the most interesting; he doesn't bring any baggage or preconceived ideas with him. And most importantly of course he seems quite good at his job.

At least he may know some solid citizens from Scandinavia - a better bet than relying on Singh taking advantage of another three for two offer at a Portugese Lidl.

The clue to the next manager lies in the recent picture of Groucho in a track suit with his initials on and wearing football boots. He's obviously now fancies his chances of being a real manager as opposed to playing it on his computer as he was doing only a few months ago. Black will be happy with pay rise and having the title of manager but Groucho gets to pull Blacks' strings and run the club ! Easy innit ! In the meantime real Rovers fans get shafted yet again and the farce continues ! Plus there,s the bonus of all transfer dealings going through him with all those honest agents ! Trebles all round !

Surely but surely they must have already been tapping someone up or are they really that stupid?

For once I hope something is going on behind the scenes and that is the delay because let's face it we all know if the Venkys get this wrong we are back to square one.

For me Black or Hendry still being at the club goes back to the bad old days of further boycotts by the fans and we DON'T want that again.

My preference is simple a good HONEST hard working manager with experience.
Hi Lancs, totally agree with everything you say. I just wish they would get on with it.

Another inexperienced manager, if it comes off. I think it's too big a risk in our position. Obviously, Singh knows best and doesn't give two hoots what the majority of the fans think.....What's new ?

Hi Alphajono, hope it is Sherwood (or Olli from Blackpool or Shearer or Ole from Molde or Benitez or anyone - well anyone but Mad Mick!)

If I didn't know better I would think the club is deliberately drawing this out so by the time they actually appoint someone we will all be that relieved that we wont give a monkeys who it is...

But it does seem like the first name on the short list is still Sherwood. He will do for me....just get him appointed today!

All of this is just typical noise. Don't waste time thinking about it too much. It'll be Black by default - cheap and compliant for the asset striping venkys regime. If they were serious they'd have had a proper shortlist drawn up months ago and would have made an appointment by now.
