Simon Garner: 'My top five picks for the Rovers job'
4:09pm Friday 12th October 2012 in News
By Simon Garner, Lancashire Telegraph columnist
Simon Garner's contenders, from top left: Eric Black, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Roy Keane, Gianluca Vialli and his number one overall choice, Tim Sherwood
Simon Garner picks his top five contenders for the Rovers managerial vacancy, in different categories, and analyses their strengths and weaknesses . . .
The incumbent: Eric Black
Everyone I speak to says that Eric is a good man and a very good coach. He knows the club, he knows the players and he is well respected by everyone at Ewood Park.
I’m sure he would be a safe pair of hands to take over in the interim but the problem is I’m not sure the appointment would attract the fans. They would see it as a ‘Steve Kean’ scenario.
That is probably a little bit unfair as well because Eric has managed before, unlike Steve, but maybe this has just come at the wrong time for him.
Rating: 3/5
The experienced: Roy Keane
A controversial choice but he could be the man to bring some discipline back to the club. He is experienced although it has to be said he didn’t set the world on fire at either Sunderland or Ipswich.
A lot of people are saying Mick McCarthy as an experienced choice and I’m sure he would get the club back up but he would probably take them down again.
Kean would be a bit of a gamble but he might just be that no-nonsense man the club need now. They need someone to tell them exactly how it is and to not be bullied by his bosses. Keane is that man.
Rating: 2/5
The foreign ‘name’: Gianluca Vialli
This one is a bit from left field, but if Venky’s decide they want a glamorous name in charge then why not someone like Vialli? He has managed in England and everyone in the game knows him.
We don’t know what Venky’s want but if they wanted a name, then Vialli would put Rovers back on the map. People would be talking about the club for the right reasons.I don’t believe a ‘name’ is the way to go but if it was I would go for Vialli.
Rating: 1/5
The managerial starlet: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
A lot of supporters seem to think Ole is the man. I see the merits in him as well as he has done brilliantly in Norway and will have learned a lot of under the stewardship of Alex Ferguson.
You have to question whether he would seriously come though, as he turned down the Villa job and that was in the Premier League. Why would he come to Rovers?
Ole would be a very interesting proposition though and I would be tempted to go and sound him out. He’d be a gamble but what isn’t?
Rating: 4/5
The Rovers legend: Tim Sherwood
Sherwood is my choice out of everyone. Whether that is possible financially, I have no idea but I would be all for breaking the bank to bring him to the club. People say he is inexperienced but I don’t agree. Maybe he has not managed before but he is highly thought of in the coaching set-up at Tottenham and has stayed in the game since his playing days. The likes of Alan Shearer haven’t got that.
Tim would bring the feel-good factor back. The fans would be behind him and that is something we need.
Rating: 5/5

Goes without saying. He's young, dynamic, hungry for success and has proven his credentials, albeit with a smaller Norwegian club.
OGS is the guy we need at BRFC NOW!
Taking on ANY manager is a gamble, but I'm sure the vast majority of fans agree, that he will not only give us a feelgood factor, but will also draw in the crowds, something which has been amiss at Ewood for several years now.
Come on, Venky's! Prove yourselves as worthy owners, and give us somewhat of our pride back by appointing OGS!
Long reign the ROVERS.....

Serwood has had no managerial experience whatsoever.
He may be highly regarded as technical advisor at Spurs but that doesn't mean he will make a good manager.
Remember Brian Kidd & Ray Harford - both excellent coaches but they could not make the step up to manager.
And let us not forget Steve Kean - another coach with no managerial experience.
It has got to be OGS and quick bcause I am sure Bolton are thinking along the same lines.
I just hope that we haven't wasted the past 14 days and now need to get our new man in place by early next week so he has time to prepare the squad for Derby next Saturday.

Sherwood is a gamble, but an expensive one, he gets a million at Spurs, plus compensation to buy out his contract.
My bet is the cheapest option and that looks like Black.
Second best, some out of work hack - McCarthy, Coyle, Reid.
The OGS, Schuster, etc list is a repeat of the Ronaldhino, Beckham nonsense, it's just Shabby clowning around.
What odds on a coaching job for Ali ?

I really fear they are going to put someone like sherwood or shearer in the hotseat... While this is nice as a gesture to give them a proper chance in football management, and a cheaper option probably, I see it turning sour if they oversee a couple of early losses (seen to not be up to being a manager)... Where as Ole would be seen as more proven success in management just 'getting his squad sorted'
I just want to see venkys actually do something, speak to us about your intentions... Or have you literally not got a single fcuking clue what you are doing??'

As I am sure you know, you have wronged this club. We have gone from being a respected and well-run Premier League team to the farce of English football. your handling of the Kean situation was ludicrous, to the point of suspicious. But you have a chance to take a step towards amending the wrongs you have done.
Please listen to the fans on this message board, if you want to unite the fans then pick the name the majority agree on- Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Do everything in your power to convince him to come- he has learnt from the best, and Sir Alex once said he was the only player to actually WATCH the game and learn tactically when he was on the bench- a sign of his promise as a future manager. He has had unbelievable success so far and could be a marvellous manager for Rovers.
If you want the fans' forgiveness, don't take the easy decision of Black or an over-hyped ex-player. We as a club have gone through a lot of torment during your tenure- I hope you will listen to us now.
Sincerely,
A Rovers fan.

Keans been gone 2 weeks now and Rovers have been linked with just about every manager, ex manager, young manager, wannabe manager and ex player, yet we are still left dangling without the first clue of who it might be. Once again Venkys and their cronies prove their complete and utter amateurishness and failure at running a football club. What the f00k is going on!? I realise this is a very big decision but surely they can shortlist 3 or 4 of the best candidates, interview them, make a decision, employ a proper manager and try to redeem some of the mayhem and shambles they have created over the last 2 years! Whats the odds we will have to wait another couple of weeks whilst Singh talks more political spin only to watch in horror as they make yet another catastrophic decision and we're back to square one!

Sherwood is the next best choice - his football knowledge and technical ability is top class and he has already organised the Spurs academy and youth set-up to the highest levels. He is 'seemingly' the chosen one for the club to be their next manager once all the terms and compensation is agreed. They do not seem to talking to anyone else so the shortlist must only have one name on it like Shebby hinted the other day - and that name is Tim Sherwood.

Yes we are Asians we own lot of business in UK likes of Land Rover/ Jaguar,British Steel,Tetley Tea,Dr Reddy,New Look,Bestway Cash and Carry ltd,Accrol Papers,Northern Foods,Poundstrecher,
B&N,Voi Jeans,Caparo Groups,Euro Garages and many more.Britain's richest man is a Asian Mr Laxmi Mittal who owns the largst steel plants around the world. The Venkys are worth £2 Billion and they are one of the richest family in India. They bought this club from The Walker family of Blackburn and the Venky wrote of the Club's debt.Brfc was in the market for over two years no American or Arab buyers were intrested so the Indians have bought his great club because of the town's large Indian population.Bollywood or bust !

"They need someone to tell them exactly how it is and to not be bullied by his bosses. Keane is that man. "
And Keane wouldn't bully them at all would he?
And then his best idea? To appoint Tim Deadwood, a no good selfish lout who will fall out with players quicker than Nzonzi chinned that bald Alkie Steve Kean
On Deadwood "I would be all for breaking the bank to bring him to the club."
BREAK THE BANK ON THAT PR*ICK? You mug Garner. Deadwood is utter filth of a person and is so thick he finds Jamie Redknapp a good conversationalist.
But Garner's best comment comes later where he manages to contradict himself in one sentence.
"People say he (Sherwood) is inexperienced but I don’t agree. Maybe he has not managed before...."
Garner, the reason people say Deadwood is inexperienced is because he has no experience. NO EXPERIENCE. Zero. So you disagree all you like.
They say you get what you deserve and you mongolids deserve what Garwood is advocating. Good luck in administration

Indians are not all jiggly janglies ,not all waiters, Indians are VERY smart people, prepared to take losses in business as long as they are going in the right direction, Indians are good people, most Indians are good and decent folk.,and very intelligent.
Its not the Venkys fault it is the people giving them advice , they need people to give the VENKY`S Honest advice , believe me the Indians will very quickly find out the people that are giving bad advice and they will find out the ones providing honest advice and they will be relentless in their success in their business ,the only advice the Venkys have had so far is from people that are agents/investors/emp
loyees people that are looking for their own self gain , the Venkys (not Shebby) but the two lads have to go into town have a meeting and say ,right now how do we move on from here, with the Rovers faithful voice with them.

Shebby is Global Advisor and has said that his remit is to get Rovers promoted this season. It follows, therefore, that he will not and indeed cannot allow a manager to have full control of footballing matters at Rovers. If he did, Shebby would no longer be able to directly influence the direction of the club. And he would, in effect, be abdicating from his Global Advisor role.
IMHO, no manager worth his salt will want his every daily decision scrutinised by someone with the power to say "Don't do that. Do something else." Normally the owners are not so intrusive and allow the manager to take care of all footballing matters until such time as results don't match their expectations. But the Global Advisor, even if Shebby says he is only there to support the manager, can intervene at any time at all.
I cannot see anybody but a desperate yes-man taking on such a manager's role. Even Kean didn't want it. So when Shebby says they are compiling a shortlist of the right 'type' of manager, I think that 'type' has got to be someone who will accept Shebby's power to be able to override or suggest otherwise at any time.
Venky's have allowed someone with no practical experience of English league football to run things. This is no better than JA running things. I can see manager contract negotiations dragging on for months and months because no manager with any self-respect or common sense will want to work in that kind of a setup.
Have I got it wrong?

BRFC is a just a limited company and there is no law to say that the owners aren't obliged to bail it out when it goes tits up. They can walk away and let it die and the wonderful empire you talk of can still flourish.
And when they do, I will laugh. At you, at Hendry (not that he gives one solitary f*uck), at Shearer. And at the the memory of Steve Kean and Rao's pony tail.
