Blackburn Rovers role is a fantastic job, says caretaker boss

ERIC Black believes filling the Blackburn Rovers hot seat is a ‘fantastic job’ for somebody – but insists his sole focus is on keeping their promotion bid on track for as long as is required.

Rovers’ caretaker boss admitted he feels he has ‘unfinished business’ in his managerial career but will not be thinking about his ‘long-term’ prospects ahead of Wolves’ Ewood Park visit tomorrow.

Rovers are understood to have received interest from more than 30 candidates in the race to succeed Steve Kean, with the likes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Bernd Schuster, Alan Shearer and Roy Keane believed to be interested.

But, with Rovers putting the managerial search on the back burner as they focus on getting back to winning ways, Black is adamant the only thing on his mind is on winning three points.

Black said: “It is a fantastic club there is no doubt it. It has phenomenal history, it has got a great fan base. The facilities are first class. That is why I am sure there have been so many people handing their CVs in.

“I have not thought about it. I am just focused on the result. I am not daft enough not to know that two points out of nine does not look as good as five points out of nine, but I just have to focus on the team. That is the short term impact I can have.

“I am sure the time will arrive pretty quickly where I have to decide if I want to be considered. But I am not getting too fixed up on it I have to be honest.

“We will see what happens. If things work out my way maybe they will decide I am the right man but I know there are a lot of high calibre candidates out there and I know how football works and operates. There won’t be any surprises for me.”

Black has previously managed at Motherwell and Coventry, the last time being back in 2004, before also enjoying caretaker spells at Birmingham and Sunderland.

And he admits he would relish the opportunity to get back into management one – whether it is at Blackburn Rovers or not.

He said: “I always felt when I left Coventry I had unfinished business. But I never felt I was a big enough name to come out and pick and a choose a job.

“I very much enjoyed working with Steve Bruce over eight and a half years and I had an awful lot of experiences that I think would stand me in good stead.

“But I am not a big enough name to go on a few holidays and then someone picks up the phone and offers me the ‘Man United job’ or the ‘Tottenham job’.

“I want to work in the game and at that time working with Steve was the best option. I had offers to manage, even when I was with Steve Bruce, but they were not ones I thought were attractive enough to give me a real opportunity to do what I want to do.”

If Black gets results then I dont mind him as manager. He speaks far more sense and is 100 times better then Kean with the fans.

Blacks right, he hasn't got a big enough name and its nice to see some honesty. I think we need to start a fresh with a new manager so we get a real sense of a clean slate. If the new manager wants to keep Black then fine but I think the Blackburn Job is too big for him.

This guy is like a breath of fresh air after Kean. Sensible, down to earth, realistic comments. Just highlights yet again what a b*llshit merchant Kean was.

But sorry Black, we need to get back in the Prem this season, so I think you are just too big of a gamble for the top job. This club doesnt have the luxury of time. Hope he sticks around and provides some continuity for the incoming new man though.

Yeah, but he has already made an impact.. Is it a good one though? I think he has left players out in the two games that should have been playing, however it was a slight improvement on kean. Are we happy with a slight improvement on kean or do we want someone who will have full control over his dressing room and make destinctive changes that show the class that we have in the team? I think he should defo be the second man to whoever comes in because he does know the game, but I don't think we need to take another gamble after the blunder of the last gamble.

What we need is a clean break! A clean break from any influence of the 'old guard' is needed. And that includes Eric Black!

Black may be a more open and honest guy, but it doesn't take us away from the fact, that this guy was taken on, and was number two to the odious one!

Sorry, Eric. You do se more approachable, and arguably likeable. But it doesn't take us away from the fact, that you're not experienced enough. We need a high profile manager. Simple as.

Ole Gunnar solksjaer please step forward!

The set up of the team and emphasis on keeping a clean sheet clearly indicates a change in the philosophy of the importance of keeping clean sheets. Black and hendry previously would have been working under the remit of kean and how he wanted the side set up. Now he is history sense has prevailed. it will however be interesting to see the team selected and the formation for the Wolves game to reveal Blacks ambitions to win the game. Certainly an improvement on Kean but whether upto the No1 job is unclear and too much of a risk imo.

Hmm. Two points out of six. I suppose you could call those results, especially in the circs that he took the job. But what do you propose? Having had a Telegraph Poll on who the fans want - its very clear that they want an experienced Manager in all aspects of the word and Blacks name didnt stand out as being the wanted man. Just hope that the Venkys have taken note of this and dont go down the easy and cheapest route of promoting from within especially from Keans mates - will you ever be able to trust them and will Kean always be in the background passing comment to them!!
No I am afraid Black/Hendry & Co are not the men for me, we should now take the opportunity to have a clean sweep with an experienced Manager and his own backroom staff.

Balck comes across very sensible, level headed and realistic. From the two games he appears more defensive in play. Will he be more attacking at home? Can Rovers afford to take a risk with him or someone like Solskaer? Venkys have to make difficult decisions soon.

always a strange time when a caretaker managers is involved because everybody has to say the right things, shebby can`t exactly say to eric " look after this for a bit mate , but you`ll be out on your ear as sonn as we find someone better " and Eric cant exactly say i am not interested and kind of has to apply or you could argue when its time to go that he could have applied for the big job and did not want it so we are going to pay less compensation. Im afraid we have to wait and see what happens here , everything we hear will just be media speculation and people saying the right things at the right time.

clearly any managerial appointment will be a gamble. he hasn't put his name forward at this point, but should he do so, he should be asked to provide a short, medium and long term plan just like any other and should be evaluated fairly. we shouldn't exclude him because he worked for kean, just as we shouldn't favour him because he's here already.
unfortunately, we will be left entrusting this decision to the venky's regime and will just have to hope it is right. however, we should be willing to accept that it is not the case that there will be the right man and a load of wrong'uns. whoever we chose will bring something and we hope that means promotion and some top flight stability with room for improvement. it's great to have a lot of interest, but thinking purely logistically, this will take time to resolve. so whatever happens longer term, i just hope black can be a decent short term manager and set the team up for the next phase!
i would certainly like to see a bit more ambition at home than we have seen in the last two matches, but there is certainly no deep shame in the last two results. a home game provides an important test for black if he has ambition to take the job on full time. let's hope he can give himself a chance.

I agree,now we are starting afresh managers have to be looked at realistically.Big names are rareley a success,Roy Keane and Alan Shearer come to mind.Others usually get the sack whoever they are, do the circuit, then get forgotten.Ian Holloway,Mick Macarthy, good managers,flavour of the month at the moment but still sacked in the past and will be again in the future.There are exceptions like Fergie and Harry Rednapp,but they are few and far between.

I believe he was quoted somehwere as saying that he will be more adventorous at home on saturday. His formation adaptation of the 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 is like a breath of fresh air rather than Kean's 4-4-1-1.

I would have the team as:

With the ball:

robinson
givet, Hanley, Dann
(right to left)
orr, formica,dunn,murphy,
olsson
rhodes,rochina.

Wihout the ball, Orr and Olsson will revert back to make a 5 man defensive.


Lets get at them on saturday, close down quickly, remeber we are at home and once the roar, the wolves palyers will freeze.

High powered jobseekers react in such a manner!

The likes of OGS, in many cases, will deny that they have made an application. The reason being, should they be unsuccessful in getting the job, it doesn't bring into question their ability.

The claim is, that there have been around thirty applicants, yet none of them has cone forward and confirmed that they have thrown their hat into the ring!

Dunn needs to shed a few stone before he even steps on the pitch in my opinion, perhaps for experience but I'd rather pray Etuhu's fit.

What's going on with Murphy? He's been absolutely shocking so far - I was really looking forward to seeing him this season, thouht what a signing!! But now I'm starting to understand why he left Fulham... let's hope he can buck his ideas up tomorrow and pass to the blue/whites rather than oranges.

Wish we'd see Rochina Weds night, think he could have done something special.

If you look at what OGS has been quoted as saying he said he has "not spoken to Blackburn as yet" and "cannot say more about Blackburn now"

These statements are not definitive rejections to an approach, they sound to me like he is interested and is waiting for the process to go further before saying anything. Why would anyone in a job start saying they want another job before any real talks have happened??!! What do fans expect, OGS to come out and say "yeah I really want the Rovers job" before he has even properly discussed the position, get real.

The managers that come out and say things like that are the ones that have nothing else, like Roy Keane, and have to get the PR rumour mill going.

Andy Cryer has said the process has not even begun in earnest so lets wait and see, what's the rush to get someone in if they are not the right person? We are still better off without Kean and if Black can get 3 points tomorrow we are still in the mix at the top.

If we want to try and get back at first bounce we must appoint someone with a track record.no room for sentiment look where that got Venkys with Kean.It's the wrong time for Black to be given his chance here as we don't have the time to find out if he can cut it at this level. Even an experienced manager may struggle at the beginning.

If not, you obviously didnt travel to Forrest on Wed night when we were WOEFULL and lucky to get anything against a very very ave championship side missing their main two strikers.

Infact EB tactics and his substitutions were so bad that the entire away support began singing "are you Steve Kean in disguise" towards the end of the game.

The guy is obviously uber NEGATIVE and I felt particularly sorry for JR - whats the point in spending £8m on the most expensive striker the Championship has ever seen, only to go out and "tactically starve him" of any service ???? - complete and utter bonkers !!

I didnt go to the match, it wasn't my view, just that was the comment one of the staff at Ewood said to me. He didnt say so much but it was obvious that Black's philosophy is thankfully different to Kean's!!

Got to say I would prefer Black not to be manager...My preference would be Di Canio, who has done an amazing job with Swindon....but hey some would disagree. All I am saying is if Black is given the nod then the fans have to be 100% behind him, I think some have got into a habit of moaning for moanings sake, which is not good.

There`s managers and then their is assistant managers ,Eric Black probably a decent enough chap but he is an assistant manager, sorry but Black has no presence to be manager..
Managers have presence Fergie/.Wenger/Big Sam /Mourinho/ arry Boy/ Moyes /Hughes/ list is endless for managers with presence as it is for assistant managers who do not.
Would you ask Kenny to be an assistant NO of course not.
Some are managers and some are assistants ,Black must know after 6 years of being Bruce`s assistant at Birmingham/Wigan/Sun
derland ,and eventually when Bruce left Sunderland, Black lasted 5 days as manager ,surely it must have become obvious that Black was always ever going to be an assistant.
Its appearing as though there are moves to promote Black as manager by the owners through Shebby ,it would save the cost of a experienced manager but would this then mean that is the way Rovers are going to be working from now on, recruiting from within ,we`ll be going right down the line to eventually the canteen lady will end up as manager.
No irrespective of the result tomorrow to move forward we must get a experienced manager in hopefully with his own coaching team , we MUST get rid of the coaches and start fresh with a clean slate, Keans pals MUST GO ,Kean brought them in , I can understand Black coming in , but surely Kean must have thought bringing Hendry in ,he would only be used as a buffer for Kean,and of course when Kean moved to Lytham ,Hendry would pick him up and drive him to Blackburn/Brockhall and quite often to the pub, we have no need for Hendry now, 8,000 pounds was always a lot for a taxi driver.

Shebby do what you are here for, bring in a whole new management/coaching staff , get rid of all Kean`s leftovers ,a new experienced manager and we can leave all this behind us.

Well it's not the fans choice and the big suspicion remains that Venkys might make a financial choice and not a footie choice, which means a cheapo manager like Black.
As to Black being a good tactician, that says more about the quality of Rovers staff who made the comment, than about Black's ability.
The soccer world is fully aware of the shenanighans at Ewood and Shabby is not a convincing figure. You may argue that a chance to make a name as a manager - Ole Sol is in that bracket -might overcome the doubts about working under such an outfit as the Venkys. Certianly it's a crucial moment in Rovers history. Have Venkys seen the light ? and will make a sensible footie decision ?
My gut feeling is no and that Shabby is just posturing - it's all reminiscent of the bids for Beckham, Ronaldhino, Maradona.
As always, I hope for the best, but I am not rushing to take up my season ticket yet.

Remember this is the same guy that was SK’s right hand man, since Blacks arrival has anyone witnessed any improvement?
And in the two games in which he could really make an impression,
3 centre halves, congested defence, huge gaps between midfield and the forwards
Against very poor opposition with no recognised strikers, opposition that was there for the taking
We spend 8 million on a striker and not a player can get the ball to him
A fantastic tactician and manager is Eric Black as well as being part of Jerome Andersons set up
If people think that all that is ok then we are in trouble

any side that is selected with Orr in is not going to get the result we need... Robbo Olsson Givet Dann Hanley/Riberio Murphy Dunn/Pederson Rochina/Formica Nunes Rhodes Gomes/KR Play as a 4-4-2 and go for it.....

We are supposed to have a forward line capable of scoring goals willy-nilly but in the last two games not so,because the whole team lacks any sort of pattern of play,poor pedantic midfield,no wingers or wide men too supply telling crosses for Rhodes to feed off,general lack of fitness,all this needs to be improved by whoever is appointed,and the sooner the better before we lose to much ground.

We are a big club,you are right and honest man Eric .We need a big name Manager like Redknapp,Benitez,Sol
skjaer, etc etc.Sorry Eric this is far too big job for you.We were in Premier League for the last 18 years ,won the Premiership Title with Dalglish and Carling Cup with Souness.We had many big name players and big name managers at BRFC, our average gate is around 25,000 .Blackburn Rovers FC is big club in the country,friends around country tells me Blackburn should get back in Premiership asap .Clubs like Swansea,QPR,Norwich,
Wigan,Reading are just in the premier league by luck while since the Premier league was formed in 1992 Rovers were in this league for 18 years and won the title in 1995.Only five clubs have won the title Man Utd,Blackburn,Arsena
l,Chelsea and Man City.That i why BRFC is one of biggest club in country and one of the oldest club in the country.

This is only a fantastic job if you can handle it in the right way,,not in the style of wednesday night,, far too negative,with this squad we should be taking it to the opposition,,,we do have defensive weakneses which need to be addressed,,but atleast try for 3 points and not 1,,clean sheets are not what we are about,,if we concede 3 we need to score 4,,its that simple,,we must believe we can win all our games,,,instill this into the players and if they are up to it,,you will see at the end of the game,,bill shankley was of the same mindset,, best of luck young man,,,

If Rovers want get back up then they need a manager who is strong enough the demand higher levels of concentration and patient with the killer ball because this is the reason for errors. They have to make the team outwork the opposition and get used to the pressure of winning back-to-back for a long period of matches, last year reading did it the hard way by starting slowly then winning nearly all their games in the second part of the season http://en.wikipedia.

Southampton results stayed consistent staying in 1st first or second position throughout the whole season.
Either way Rovers have to make sure they put themselves in a position where they are still in the race for fighting for automatic promotion, if we aim for the play-offs only then we dont want to risk missing out altogether.

No I can assure you Rovers are not a big club and more importantly we don't want to be a big club. I don't know where you have come from but you are way off the mark. Every team that makes it into the top flight does so on merit, and when they aren't good enough, they get relegated. English football is a meritocracy and is all the better for it. The smaller teams currently in the prem deserve to be there, they aren't lucky. Likewise, we aren't in the prem at this time and that isn't unlucky. You need to give Swansea and the others some credit, but I suspect you don't appreciate how things are

Blackburn were in Premiership from 1992 to 1999 and got relegated in 1999 and back in the premiership in 2001 to 2012.Blackburn won the premiership title in 1995 and won the carling cup in 2002.Blackburn,Man Utd,Arsenal,Chelsea and Man city the only five clubs to have won the premiership titles to this date. As for Blackburn and Newcastle are the oly two small clubs were the premier league for 18 years.Big clubs likes of Man Utd,Liverpool.Chelse
a,Everton,Arsenal and Spurs the only six clubs that never got relegated .Blackburn are a big club in a small town.BRFC have a bad foreign owers who knows nothing about football and bad choice of manager and people in the board room.The BRFC fans are not stupid, the fans were always right that the club was heading in the wrong direction under this new owners.
