COMMENT: Venky's need to get this right

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

JUST a glance at the suggestions for Blackburn Rovers’ next manager shows what a difficult job owners Venky’s have on their hands.

Is experience the most important criteria? It is time to give a young manager his chance? Would a former Rovers favourite get the fans back on side at Ewood Park? These are all the questions the Raos, Shebby Singh, Paul Agnew and Derek Shaw are going to have to ask and answer to make sure they avoid the disaster of the club’s last managerial appointment.

The Lancashire Telegraph’s poll is just a snapshot of fans’ feelings, but you can understand why there is such a call for a more experienced man this time round.

The inexperienced route didn’t exactly work last time with Steve Kean, did it?

Ian Holloway would be a good shout for the job. He knows what the Championship is all about and has the respect of most fans.

Would he come? Maybe, maybe not. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.

Mick McCarthy is another solid, reliable candidate, with vast experience and it is no surprise he got a large percentage of the votes as well.

Bernd Schuster is an eye opener, while the likes of Harry Redknapp and Rafa Benitez have to be unlikely.

I get the impression the owners are keen to steer away from the ‘old school’ mould, which would rule McCarthy out.

The idea of bringing a former Rovers favourite back has also invoked mixed reactions.

You can see the appeal. Imagine the feelgood factor of someone like Alan Shearer taking the hot seat?

Whether that would last though is a difficult one as there is no track record to judge him on.

Tim Sherwood is another difficult one. He hasn’t got any managerial experience but how do you get experience?

Sherwood is highly thought of at Tottenham.

From all the early suggestions though, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the best fit for me. He is young, dynamic and with fresh footballing ideas – the exact characteristics Venky’s are looking for.

He also has some managerial experience, having led Molde to their first ever top flight title last season and taking them to the brink of winning it again this year.

Would he leave Molde? Publicly he will state he is happy there but an interest has been expressed from his representatives to Rovers and that means there is a chance.

Whatever happens, any manager is a gamble. Venky’s need to make sure they do their homework to ensure the gamble has been taken with authority and knowledge.

Definitely OGS for me, his relationship with his current team is amazing, we need that at rovers, a manager who has personality and brains unlike that *******.

Winning the Norwegian title is a much higher level than doing well with Franchise FC in division 4!

Also Solskjaer never described himself as "the guv'nor".

Not mr you score 1 goal we will score 2 Holloway please, a lot of fickle fans at Rover's will soon get on his back for having zero defence. Blackpool fans can handle it but our club definitely won't. OGS, Redknapp or Curbs for me

In fact a manager who knows how to manage a defence & can organise a team in order to create 4/5 chances per game will do for me

It was Sherwood's job for the taking - but seems he wont walk away from Spurs even though they dissed him quite badly over the DoF role he thought was his.

So now its Ole Gunnar who is coming as our next manager - unless Sherwood has a very sudden and late change of heart.

Forget all the rest. All hail Ole!

That is Ole and not Olly! He might have been ok now - but maybe not in the prem?

And thank god it is not Mad Mick McC or the Kean with an E at the end)....they are dinosaurs and we need someone fresh and ambitious now and Ole fits the bill I think...

OGS perfect ,great record at Molde F.C. decent honest bloke, did well coaching at United , he still has Mark Dempsey as his assistant at Molde F.C. Dempsey is from Manchester was also a youth team coach with Solskjaer at United did a great job there together , on the face of it the perfect choice , Shebby do it now OGS and Dempsey, and we`ll be back in the Prem next season..

OGS hands down for me.

The baby faced assassin that I'm sure will run through his teams.

Roy Kean would be a no goer for me. Doesn't fill me with confidence as I don't believe he feels his players can live up to his high standards ?

Failing that then Henning Berg would be a serious contender for me also.

OGS has done well at Molde F C still a lot to learn but let him do that in the championship with Rovers plus Dempsey as well, then back to the Premiership next season.

OGS is a good call, despite the fact that all of us detest his former purple nosed boss. His relationship with Ferguson would be beneficial when it comes to loan signings, a link that disappeared after his best mate Sam was sacked.

I personally would love to see OGS take over at Rovers. He has had a great career at the top level and is immediately proving himself as a fine young manager. Sir Alex Ferguson has been quoted as saying that OGS would make an excellent manager and he knows a thing or two about this. Also because of the connections with Fergie I would hope we could bring on on loan some of Uniteds bright young stars of the future to give us some energy and verve with little outlay. OGS knows the area and would settle immediately. If he will come please get him in without delay !!!

A Rover 45 years and over says...
11:33am Thu 4 Oct 12

OGS is the best of the least experienced managers with 2 years of succesful management. Good on tactics as he used to sit on the bench at United and read the game as it unfolded then came on and made a massive difference and usually turned games round. He would fit the bill, got everything, Don't know how he would handle Venkys interference with buying players behind his back etc They will be the main problem with any manager.

I was at the city ground last night and Danny Murphy was appalling. He's obviously just going through the motions and taking his money. He has no pace and it looks like his legs have gone.

Reo Coker is 28 and has a good engine on him. We seriously need a box-to-box type who has the energy and drive to kick start our attack.

Reports say OGS has distanced himself from the Rovers job. If you read carefully, this is not true;
Solskjaer said. "We have gone up this path before and it is only speculation. It will happen when it happens, that I have to pick up the phone to Kjell Inge Rokke regarding a job offer, but I have not spoken to Blackburn as yet.

The lines - 'it will happen when it happens' and 'but I have not spoken to Blackburn as yet' are I believe indicators that he is interested and we need to get him ASAP!!!!!

For me the over-riding priority is to sort out the management. Get rid of the Mickey Mouse lot who are masquerading as management at the moment and do EVERYTHING possible to bring back John Williams and Tom Finn – with total authority. Then the club would be able to rebuild with confidence and without the meddling of clueless people.

If that is not done first, it really doesn’t matter which manager is brought in. Either he would be just another puppet – or he would pack his bags as soon as Mickey and his friends started poking their noses in. Either way they would be back where they started.

Bringing in players behind the manager’s back is madness.

Jesus, I bet you're still bitter than your first girlfriend left you for somebody better looking, aren't you?

Nothing 'Judas' about doing a legendary job for Rovers (like Big Al did) then moving on to his real love, his hometown club.

I'd take Shearer back in a heartbeat, experience or no experience.

But at the end of the day, I don't care who takes over as long as he's not Steve 'The Weasel' Kean.

Which just goes to show that UEFA badges ain't worth sh8.

Sorry, don't recollect any instances of the crowd singing for the removal of Souness, Hughes or Allardyce, so a bit of fabrication there on your part to support your tenuous argument and to justify your continuing defamation of genuine Rovers supporters.

Rest assured that I wouldn't let a sanctimonius, self-congratulatory tw@t like you influence how I support the team that I have followed for the last 37 years. Little wonder, based upon the above insight that you have a soft spot for Kean.

Funny....esp Harry's dog. Seriously tho Mick McCarthy has the best record of all the managers mentioned (of getting teams promoted). Sure, if he struggles in the Premiership then you reassess the situation then....until the club gets promoted that won't be a problem!! Def not Sherwood....the fans don't have much love for him. Ole or McCarthy for me.
