Gomes ready to carry on scoring for Blackburn Rovers

RACING BACK TO THE TEAM Gael Givet is fit for tonight’s Championship clash with Middlesbrough at Ewood Park RACING BACK TO THE TEAM Gael Givet is fit for tonight’s Championship clash with Middlesbrough at Ewood Park

NUNO Gomes believes he has plenty of goals left in him after a good start to life at Blackburn Rovers – despite admitting his career had been written off by some in his native Portugal.

Gomes scored for a fourth successive game when he came off the bench to net the winner against Barnsley on Tuesday, and thinks his form can get even better as he continues to adapt to the Championship.

The Portugal international had been rested to protect his 36-year-old legs in midweek but is expected to be back in the starting line-up when Rovers host Middlesbrough in front of the Sky Sports cameras at Ewood Park tonight.

Defender Gael Givet is fit to return after a dead leg.

There was some initial scepticism, both in England and Portugal, about Rovers’ decision to sign Gomes on a two-year contract this summer.

And, while the veteran insists he has nothing to prove after a successful career, he revealed that some in his homeland did doubt he could revive his goalscoring days after leaving Braga.

FROM BACK PAGE “Part of the people, yes,” he said. “The ones who support you they always believe in you, the ones who don’t like you they just criticise.

“Some people said, ‘Oh, he is finished in football’.

“But you know I feel okay and I am happy to be here.

“I am happy to be a part of this team and to keep playing because I enjoy playing football.

“If I thought that I wasn’t ready for this challenge, I wouldn’t have come.

“I am happy that I have scored goals here, I am very glad, but if I can score more hopefully I will do in the next games.

“You get confidence and because it is my first time in England you start to know how they play the game here. In the future I think I can do better things.

“But I don’t want to show anyone, I just want to keep playing and of course keep scoring to help the team because I think that this club deserves to be in the Premier League all the time.”

Gomes’ decision to move to the English second tier might have seemed surprising on the face of it.

But the former Fiorentina and Benfica star thinks he is adapting well to a new style of football, and hopes his early form and Rovers’ position at the top of the table will now make people see that he joined a good club.

“I hope so, I hope they can think like that,” he said.

“In Portugal we see Blackburn as a big club in England, as a historic club, so I think it’s a shame that we are in the Championship because we have the structure like a Premier League club.

“I hope we can return as fast as we can.

“I am okay here, my family is happy to be here. Of course the weather is not the same as in Portugal but I am adapting, I am very glad to be here.

“The culture is almost the same, it is not a big difference from Portugal, the way of life is not a big difference.

“In football now everybody is working in virtually the same way, with the sport science and the other team members.

“On the pitch it is harder because players just keep running all the time and they don’t stop until the referee finishes the game, that is the difference I think you can find.

“It is a little bit harder but not that much harder.”

I have to say Gomes has been a great signing, his movement and touch is class, if he can pass that on to the young lads around him then that two year contract will be worth its weight in gold. I can imagine for the young portugeses lads it must be quite an experience having him their to help them settle and give them advice, hats off on this one to Rovers, i dont believe for one minute Mr Kean got him there and suspect others have persueded him to come.

Middelsborough next should be an interesting game, were not playing great at the minute and winning , which to be honest is better than playing well and losing ( Leicester suffering with this at the minute). Cant help feeling that with a good manager this team could really set this league on fire. In the mean time i will just enjoy the goals.

Don't want to get into the 'boycotting debate' today. I'd like to focus on getting three points tonight and enjoy being a Rovers fan for a change. Very confident of the three points but eventually we will be exposed at the back is another thing I can virtually guarantee! I'll be watching from my favourite position in my local pub in Preston with interest!

Totally agree..... Everyone can see it but Venkys. Why won't they swing the axe and unite Ewood ?

Good luck to the TEAM tonight.

I think the LT should have two Rovers pages, one for debate about boycotts, ownership and sponsorship issues etc and the other one just for what happens on the pitch. 1-1 tonight, Kean doesn't win 3 on the bounce

Gomes could be our new Tugay. Class act. Re Kean, it would go some way to bring fans back if he came out and make a very public apology to the fans and acknowledge all the mistakes he made and lies he told over the last 2 years. It's the fact that he's so smarmy and thick skinned that fans are staying away. Agnew, do your job mate coz it's costing the club at the moment. There'd be at least 18000 on tonight if there was anybody else in charge.

Due to living away from England I only have the tv to shout at when Rovers are on, apart from very rare matches I can get back to - so hope the stay-aways enjoy the same experience tonight. Not the same at all, no way no how. I cannot even contemplate how any Rovers fan can resist going down to Ewood to watch them 'live' especially at a night match, (love those nights at Ewood) and even more so when we are winning and top of the league.

Stuff Venkys and the Odious one and all the rubbish in the boardroom and get yourselves down and shout on the team. Your team. Surely you can see that you are not proving anything to anyone (not even yourselves if you are truthful) anymore by staying away any longer. Like the marches and the early protests they are only really effective at the beginning when it is all new and shocking.....but any success from any action fades away over time... and that is when protests need a new or fresher approach to keep the topic in the news and in our case to help get SK out? Seeing the arrogance on his face at matches It seems at the moment like he knows that he is not going anywhere soon. That has to change.

SK will eventually go, he will not be manager for ever. The club and us fans will still be here. If we don't secure promotion this year there may be no way back for us.

14 points on the board, no games lost, yeah, tonight may just be it!! Honestly?? I don't support Kean but let's put this into perspective.

He is getting paid probably c.£1m for not doing his job well. Why would he walk away? He isn't going to land another job like this.

If they sack him, what other manager would join our club the state it is in. Players bought for you, minimal contact with the board, no back office support.

The guy is a yes man and happy to operate as one.

Unless a local fan wins the 10th Euromillions rollover or we manage to create another steel magnate who is a die hard fan then we are stuck with what we have.

It isn't ideal but it is fact. We need to get on with it. 5000 fans staying away is small beer compared to tv rights and marketing which is clearly what Venky's were after.

They buy the club for £40m sell players to at least that amount, are now known globally and could have a fire sale if we don't get promoted and still walk away quids in.

Get behind the team and enjoy the wins - For now!

For christs sake man, live for today, you never know what tomorrow brings (especially with all those ICI fumes you been happily breathing in for years!)
If this team was in the prem now we'd be bottom because we wouldn't have been given space to score and would have conceded more goals due to dire defending (coached by Hendry, a man who's lost so much respect in so shorter time)
However we're in the championship and from what I've seen there isn't an outstanding team in the whole division. So enjoy the moment , we've got the routine spanking of the inbreds coming up and believe me after talking to some proper cl@rets fans (there is the odd one or two believe it or not), they are 5hitting themselves about playing us.
What do you want you moaning b@stards?
Jacks gone and so has his legacy sadly , do you want a Bill Fox type club? 6000 gates , p1ssing against a wall in the Blackburn End bogs and excited by a free transfer of someone who played for Barcelona 5 years ago?
The lot of you moaning whining gits need to get a grip, support the team we love, abuse the manager we hate if you think it helps and try our best to get OUR club back in the top flight.
If you have your mind oggled with all the chemicals you've breathed in over the years then p1ss off and watch your other local club, plenty of room at the breezebock to watch that other snivelling , money grabbing fenian coyle make a mess of football management too.
Rant over, get behind the Blues tonight and live for today!

So give it a rest calling all the fans that are going to the matches Kean luvvies.

I can see the headlines in the morning none will be about fans boycotting because of who the manager is it will be that rovers are a typical example of the modern game, Last season in the prem gates averaging 20k + now in the championship and playing against the likes of boro etc instead of the uniteds of this world fans will not bother attending. you can kid yourself all you want about sending this so called message in front of cameras and i hope that the fans aren't portrayed as glory hunters but we all know the media will slate fans like they did last season.

But back to the game another shambolic defensive display but a 3 - 2 win to stay ahead of the chasing pack

You're right, the marches and protests probably only had any chance of being effective early on and there should now be a newer approach - perhaps staying away is it.

There's only been three home matches so its a bit early to be saying it is "not proving anything to anyone".

You may not be able to contemplate how any Rovers fan can resist going down to Ewood but, and I know it's a quaint old fashioned notion, but some people do still have principles.

So what if they do? We've got used to it by now.

Besides, Mrs D and da boyz wont be reading the Sun in Pune and certainly wont be here to pick one up, so who cares?

I would hope they would see the empty seats on TV (if they do actually bother watching it) and think "That can't be right".

Here here. Stayaway "fans" - rubbish. You cannot be a fan and boycott matches. Grow up. We are top of the 2nd division (I still operate in old money). Try watching away games at Plymouth in Div 3. Of course you wouldn't - no matter who woned the club and who was manager. I don't like Keen or Venky's any either but I love my club. I forgive you for giving the boycott a go, but it has not worked and will not work. You deprive the club of your support and thereby handicap the team. Boycotters don't want us promoted if Keen stays (which of course he would). They would prefer us to be relegated if Keen goes. Boycotters, you are a disgrace to our club. Go the whole hog and turn up at Turf Moor.

Hope your right but I don't hold much faith.... unless we get turned over. Can Kean manage a team to 3 successeive wins? Surely not. Draw written all over it tonight: 2-2...I despise myself for admitting if a loss got him the chop I'd take a Rovers hiding but it won't happen. Why? Because Boro are 5hit and we, despite having the worst football club manager ever to walk the earth, have a far superior team.
