Blackburn Rovers chief’s praise for club’s travelling supporters

BLACKBURN Rovers operations director Paul Agnew has paid tribute to the club’s travelling fans – and hopes tomorrow’s home game against Barnsley will start to see an increase in gates at Ewood Park.

Rovers moved to the top of the Championship with a 5-3 win at Bristol City on Saturday and Agnew is keen to acknowledge the role of the supporters in the club’s early season results.

Around 1,200 fans were at Ashton Gate – as were co-owners Balaji and Venkatesh Rao, who saw £8m record signing Jordan Rhodes get off the mark with his first goals for Rovers.

Agnew said: “The fans have backed us in numbers away from home and that is fantastic.

“We had the long trip to Ipswich for the first game and we took more than 1,000, we took 1,400 to Leeds and on Saturday we had 1,200.

“When I started my new role in July I was very clear that we were starting from a position of weakness because we know relegation hurt a lot of people and that it would take a lot for people to come back.

“We said if we could win games and investment we could start to turn people around. I know it’s very early in the season but I think we are starting to see the shoots of that.

“The owners have backed the club.

“It’s very rare for a club to break their transfer record in the Championship but we have done that and it was great to see that already starting to get a return on that with Jordan Rhodes scoring two goals on Saturday in front of the owners. They enjoyed the goals, they were animated when they went in.”

And Agnew hopes an air of optimism will spread to games at Ewood Park, with Rovers hosting Barnsley tomorrow and then entertaining Middlesbrough on Friday. The club’s first two home games of the season, against Hull and Leicester, were watched by crowds of less than 14,000.

“We’ve turned a solid start in to a good start and it could become a great start with these two home games,” he said. “We want it to be back to the days when with the atmosphere teams fear coming away to play us at Ewood Park.

“If it’s fragmented that’s more difficult, but if everyone could unite that would be fantastic.

“We knew the home crowds would be hit, people were saying we would sell 1,500 season tickets but we’re just short of 10,000 now.”

Shut up Agnew, you know what the score it, however much you try to ignore it.

Kean is the problem, not relegation or results.

Sack the incompetent one and you'll see an influx of returning supporters.

Anything other is not just unacceptable, but is downright destructive to our club.

OUT WITH AGNEW, SINGH, VENKYS AND MOST OF ALL KEAN AND HENDRY THEN MR AGNEW IN WITH THOUSANDS OF FANS!!
As so called Operations Director you should be guiding the club as to its true position re support and once and for all understand that Kean is the real stumbling block for the fans - its easy to put the situation right, just fire the idiot and resign yourself then you will see the fans roll back in their thousands - less of the patronizing comments!!!

I can't believe our Operations Director/"Aliaster Campbell” spin doctor" doesn't read newspapers, and blogs and twitter as to why fans would rather go away than come to Ewood Park you can feel it in the air and atmosphere around the whole place.

Fans that have left and not renewed their season tickets have done it because they do not see a positive future under Steve Kean's management.

You would think with Rovers sitting top of the league you could see some supporters coming back to Ewood but let’s not forget the reason they are not going is because of the manager.

it would seem very unfair to remove Kean at present as the results rather the performances have seen us reach the summit and it would only take a couple of defeats to put the heat back on Kean to be removed.

In all honesty he should have been removed in the summer when we were relegated but for reason the owners didn’t

Paul,

I've been to the ground this morning and bought a ticket, can't wait to see the team in action.

It's for the Forest away game though. I hope the results continue to be good and promotion is achieved.

I'll be back at Ewood if/when Kean is sacked. Not before.

More rhetoric from another of Keans drinking buddies.

Kean is hated by the majorty of fans and will not return until he is removed.

Hendry also has his insatiable nose in the buddy trough. You are condoning this injustice by allowing both to remain at Ewood.

Kean > Sack = Fans > Back

"If it’s fragmented that’s more difficult, but if everyone could unite that would be fantastic"

So when is Kean getting sacked if this is the ambition? I am infuriated that support that we as supporters are showing the team NOT THE MANAGER is being shamefully used in a way that it is not intended. There would be more fans without Kean not less! Now I understand why people were so keen to boycott matches when support is hi-jacked by certain quarters of the football club like this.

"We knew the home crowds would be hit, people were saying we would sell 1,500 season tickets but we’re just short of 10,000 now"
Is this supposed to be an achievement? Really?

So I’ve read comments from rovers fans since Saturday and I’m starting to get the feeling I’m on my own with the following thought process.

Steve Kean inherits a team which is predominately made up from Big Sams players, as we know those players are very loyal and may resent Kean for replacing Sam. So motivating those players is going to be 10x harder than normal.

Since January those players have who were “Sams boys” or are no longer committed to the cause have now gone and he has brought in players who a) want to work with Kean b)want to get promoted. SURPRISE SURPRISE we’ve started performing and put a string of results together.

Do you not think if we were to sack Kean now it will just rock the boat even more. The ship has finally settled and yet fans continue to sing the same chorus. Never do I expect to hear “Steve Keans Blue and White Army” but its time to stop with the Kean out nonsense. He’s not going anywhere so deal with it, you do not have to like him, you do not have to support him, you do not have to watch his interviews or read his pre match notes but if you put as much effort into supporting the club as you do with the “Kean out” campaign then our Ewood Park would match the atmosphere at stoke.

I’ve hated Kean and Venkys but getting back to the premier league is far to important to me and if sacking him risks going back up then I want KEAN IN.

TIME TO MOVE ON.

I fear that a large number of fans would prefer upheaval and a change of manager even if it risked promotion chances. The atmosphere will only improve by bringing someone else in, he has gone beyond the point of no return. This is evident as we are now top of the league and yet this discussion still takes place. For many fans myself included I cannot believe that another manager could do worse than Steve Kean long term, whether we have a choice is another matter.

Totally - he has gone past that point and he will never have a relationship with the fans.

I'll never like him but I don't want him to go if it means staying down another season.

The wages we are paying people could kill the club unless we go straight back up.

I only hope that WHEN he performs badly the owners do not hesitate

Jesus, talk about fickle, some Rovers fans...

A couple of decent results in the 2nd division and a handful are talking like the past 18 months never happened.

Kean represents far more than just an incompetent manager. You need to look at the full picture of his comments, actions, lies, deceit and (proven, convicted) criminality to even scratch the surface of why the vast majority of us want him out as quickly as humanly possible.

A dustbin powered by a Gameboy could walk this league with the squad we have.

Kean could not motivate a hungry African with a tin of beans, never minda team full of (mostly) professionals.
He is woeful, as he's shown over 18 months and if we do get promoted whilst he's still here, then we'll see more of the same next season.

I'm just hopeful that Venky's have enough forethought to either let his overinflated contract run down and wave him off, or just bite the bullet and replace him with a proper manager as soon as his luck runs out this season.

KEAN OUT.
Fickle?

I don't think anyone will forget that the past 18 months didn't happen, nor do we disagree that Kean isn't a lying scumbag. Every rovers fan in the land agrees.

However he has managed to get a squad together who are capable of winning the league and seem to have a real spirit. Watching the celebrations on Saturday the squad were genuinely elated.

Protesting and chanting Kean out does nothing but disillusion the players.

He is not going anywhere so what's the point saying 'Kean out' over and over and over and over again. Regardless of what it starts for 18 months blah blah.

Before 18 months it's was the same thing about big Sam.

That being said the atmosphere at the away games has been cracking so I have to commend the Kean out brigade for that. The place was bouncing at Ashton gate.

And no im not a dingle.
Nice try Steve Mr Agnew in this country we always have a choice, my choice after watching BRFC for 43 years is to stay away and I will do sI until Kean is removed. Why? He got us relegated He is a Convicted drunk driver (representing my club which is a disgrace) He lied to the police He is due to stand trial (hopefully) for slander with Mr Alladyce. You as a director are also employing a coach that has ripped of pensioners and has the money to repay them but so far has not. What does this say about the standards the club has set? Disgraceful that's what disgraceful, so no many like me will not return until you cleans our club of such vermin, end off.
The last section of Lancs - pensioner's comments are important. What has the club done about these incidents, has disciplinary action by the club been taken? Has any club statement been made about Keans comments on YouTube or his drink drive situation, is there any apology from the man himself for his actions towards the supporters?
The only important aspect is that he got us relegated.

Don't agree with the whole of what the guy said but he has a point in terms of it may be time to let things take the course that has been chosen.

I am not in any way saying that I endorse Kean. It is early days in the season. I think that by Christmas we will see. Whether Kean is as dire as we all predicted or whether he has managed to put together a good side in this league to get us back where we want to be - actually at the end of the day nothing else matters than being in the Premier League (the new payments are vital to our chances of being a big club for a long time).

Exactly

If he doesn't perform we'll judge I'm sure.

The club is bigger than the manager.

Getting relegated was awful and Venkys and Steve Kean were completely responsible through utter mismanagement.

However, all that's in the past and there's no point carrying on crying over spilt milk.

What matters now is what the club are doing to rectify the issue. Venkys have made major funds available for transfers and must now be propping up the club financially so hats off to them.

Steve Kean should have been sacked and the end of last season but he wasn't and, whether you like it or not, he has made a very good start to the season, especially given that there are so many new players who have had so little time to gel.

Ok, the good start might turn out to be a false dawn and if that's the case then Kean should go, no question. However, for now, I think we fans should, for the benefit of the club, all start focussing on the positive rather than keep harking back to the negativity of last season. And there is plenty to be positive about:

1. We're scoring goals for fun. Ok, we're shipping them at the back as well, but surely we all like to see exciting football with plenty of goals. As Rovers fans we're not really used to exciting football with loads of goals but that doesn't mean its a bad thing. The number of negative comments I have read in the last few days about conceding 3 goals has far outweighed the number of positive comments I have read about scoring 5, which to me seems bizarre.

2. We're passing the ball around. I was an advocate of Big Sam as I was confident that we would always retain premiership football with him in charge. However, watching West Ham on Saturday reminded me of what I didn't like about Big Sam - long balls into the box looking for knockdowns and set pieces. Big Sam's football may have its relative successes but I prefer watching the type of football we are trying to play at the moment.

3. I don't want to sound like a PR man for the club but we've probably the best value season ticket and match day ticket prices in the land. By comparison, a colleague at work who sits next to me pays £768 for his season ticket at Leeds. I can get my season ticket for that plus Sky Sports for the season and have a bit left over for the odd bag of chips.

4. Jordan Rhodes looks like a great buy. I know its early days to say that but his nonchalant 'Thierry Henry' celebrations after his goals on Saturday suggest to me that he is a great player and he knows it.

5. Nuno Gomes looks like he's still got it. His goals, neat touches and general awareness have got me excited about watching him play for Rovers.

6. Colin Kazim Richards looks like a quality player fit to wear the Rovers shirt.

7. Murphy and Dickson Etuhu still seem to be finding their feet but surely have enough quality to be the best central midfield partnership in the division once they have got 15-20 games under their belt.

8. Paul Robinson, Gael Givet and Martin Olsson are still playing for us.

9. Pederson looks like he's got the bit between his teeth to succeed this season.

10. Leon Best will be a quality player when he's fit again.

11. We've got two derby games to play against the Dingles and we could potentially trounce them yet again, especially as they look so ordinary.

12. We've got 4 more great derby fixtures to play against Blackpool and Bolton, all of which are likely to be open affairs with lots of goals.

13. Unlike the last 10 years, we don't have to play teams like Arsenal / Man Utd / Chelsea away where we invariably concede 5, 6 and 7 goals. At least with every game this season we stand a good chance of winning before the game kicks off.

14. The owners are now turning up to watch the matches and look like they care about the fortunes of the club.

Absolutely brilliant post.

Completely hit the points I was trying to make.

It seems over the last couple of years this forum seems to be the place to moan. However I'm proud of how we have started so I'm going to shout about it and shout louder than the boo boys!

It's ironic that the boo boys if they are not careful will become the very thing they despise and by staying away of constantly booing risk the clubs future

Get on with the game

I even donated the money for the games i missed. Now i wouldn,t want to think my money went to slimy money grabing sleaze in India and to finance drunken lieing morons. it is a difficult decision.

Spot-on with those points Tatts....

If only we could replicate the magnificent Rovers support that I witnessed at Bristol City on Saturday at home matches - then Ewood Park would be some place to be. It would frighten away teams to death.

I only heard a couple of 'Kean Out' songs and they were at the beginning of the match when we went one down after a minute. But then all afternoon the noise and atmosphere created by the traveling Rovers fans was brilliant.

Nobody paid any attention to the Odious one on the touchline as everyone was concentrated on watching one of the most exciting games I have seen Rovers involved in for years.

Anyone who stays away from watching the Rovers this season purely because of their hatred for the Odious one ( a hatred that is shared by the majority of fans) are simply now cutting their nose off to spite their face.

No protest will remove him right now, no three losses or x number of points in x number of games...whatever the shenanigins between Shebby and Kean I really don't think it will change much despite all our hopes that it can - so don't let his ghoulish presence spoil what all our many years of support have all been about - watching our beloved Rovers play exciting football and scoring goals and winning.

It would be brilliant to see the Rovers fans get Ewood rocking tomorrow night.....just wish I could be there!

Top top top, Top of the League!

Lets get things in perspective.

Results have improved dramatically, but are performances that much better?

From what I have seen we were lucky to draw at Ipswich and Leeds (after the first 30 mins) could easily have drawn on Saturday. Barely deserved to beat Hull and deserved to lose to Leicester.

That doesn't even touch on the pitiful display at MKD.

We have got out of jail because of the form of our forwards.

We are still shipping an average of 2 goals a game despite being in a lower league, and are now without our ONLY defender for a few games.

I can’t believe we have spent so much and not made any improvements to the defence – bad management by any measure.

That said I hate all the protests during the games. Home or away if we go to the game we should support from the first to the last minute, anything else to me is illogical and illconceived, worse it obviously has no impact in Pune.

10,000 season tickets sold, not a chance. From the pictures I have seen there is no way there was 14,000 on for the previous home games.

This is just more spin from Mr Agnew.

If you want to see Ewood rocking again sack Kean.

He can say he took Rovers to the top and owners can say they didn't want to do it but it was the only way to wipe the slate clean for everyone. They can sing his praises as they move him on. Everyone happy and maybe SK would even get another job somewhere.

Realistically though is it wise to sack a manager when we are top of the league?

Agnew seems to have an impossible job, he himself has done nothing wrong (as far a I know but could be wrong). However, we are still one of the only or few team that 2 years a in a row don't have a sponsor. Who is responsible for this?

And no im not a dingle.

I agree with reluctanc that it would nowbe better to go toEwood tonight and get behind thelads who are clearly playing for the club and celebrated the goals with passion with the fans on Saturday.
I think the best thing that could happen at the moment is for Kean and the Venkys to publicly apologise and acknwledge their mistakes and despicable behaviour in causing our downfall last year.
I will never chant Steve Keans b and w army but an apology would go some way to repairing the damage

Has anyone thought what will happen if this clown takes us up into the premier league, he doesn't have a very good record there does he?

Oh my gosh, that would be awful if Kean took us back up to the Premier League, I hadn't thought of that.

Are these people posting in support of not sacking Kean actually real Rovers fans, or club officials trying to turn fans' opinions?

Genuine question.

AndyW wrote: Jesus, talk about fickle, some Rovers fans...

A few wins and suddenly it's rosy? The cancer is still there and it will come back

I think we're going aroud in circles and only managing to upset each other up until now. For what it's worth we need to be rid of Kean ASAP to reunite the two factions and that can only be good for the attendances, the team, and ultimately Kean. As far I'm concerned we wouldn't be having this discussion if he had gone in May (like he should have been). The 'man' must have the skin of a rhino. Be gone Keanocchio like any human being with morals would have done in May.

Are Kentaro still involved with Rovers or have they crawled back under the rock they came from?
