FULL TIME: Blackburn Rovers 2 Leicester City 1

Morten Gamst Pedersen's late strike gave Blackburn Rovers their best start to a campaign for 12 years as they secured a fortunate 2-1 win over Leicester City.

It was a bright start for Leicester City, with the away team dominating the possession in the opening 5 minutes as they piled the pressure on Blackburn’s defence.

Rovers looked edgy at the back and when they did manage to scramble the ball out of their six- yard box, they failed to retain possession in the middle of the park.

In the 12th minute Rover’s resistance was almost worn down as Ben Marshall whipped a cross into the box that was met by David Nugents diving head.

Paul Robinson made a point blank save to keep the score level, although some may argue he knew little about it. Rovers’ first corner of the game came in the 19th minute courtesy of Leicester’s Paul Konchesky’s sloppy back pass. The opportunity passed Rovers by though as Markus Olsson blasted the ball over the bar into the crowd.

Rover’s inability to retain possession nearly cost them again in the 31st minute as Leicester’s Andy King shot from just outside the six yard box. A Scott Dann deflection prevented the home side from going one nil down. It wasn’t looking great for the home side but then in the 34th minute, against the run of play Blackburn broke the deadlock.

Dickson Etuhu broke up a Leicester move and sent Jason Lowe away down the right. Lowe made a driving run and after wriggling past a last gasp tackle from Leicester’s right back, he squared the ball back to the edge of the 18 yard box for Nuno Gomes to fire a shot into the bottom right hand corner of Kasper Schmeichels goal.

With Blackburn one nil up the crowd seemed to be ignited and encouraged the home side to drive forward.

But sloppy possession once again nearly cost Rovers their lead. A powerful David Nugent shot from just outside the 18 yard box was well saved by Paul Robinson as the keeper flung himself down to his right hand side to see the ball safely out for a corner.

Leicester started the second half in the same vain as they finished the first and within 6 minutes of the restart they were nearly on level terms. Marshall’s corner was swung in and once again David Nugent managed to get his head on the ball to fire a shot at the foot of Robinson’s right hand post. It didn’t take long for the away side’s pressure to pay off and in the 56th minute Wes Morgan drove a long ball down the pitch towards Blackburn’s box.

A miss timed Givet header left Scott Dann stranded and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy took full advantage as he slid the ball past Paul Robinson’s left hand side.

Leicester continued to make chances with the closest coming on 65th minutes. A Paul Konchesky shot was blocked on the line by Danny Murphy who had given a free kick away just 2 minutes earlier on the edge of Rovers 18 yard box.

Leicester did manage to get the ball in the net ten minutes later. A cross was whipped in from the right hand side and Vardy flicked a header over Robinson into the top right corner, only for it to be ruled off side.

Then, much like in the second half, Rovers produced a goal against the run of play, thanks to a brilliant piece of skill from Morten Gamst Pedersen in the 79th minute.

Ruben Rochina’s powerful shot ricocheted high into the air and being the quickest to react; Pederson brought the ball under control with his left foot and with his right, curled a shot past the sprawling Kasper Schmeichel.

Although both sides tried to create chances in the last 15 minutes, Rovers managed to see the game out and secure their second successive victory in as many games at Ewood Park this season.

Bruno Riberio played well - He proved that he in fact does not give the ball away as Keano one mentioned, surprised he was not played at all last season especially when we were short of full backs!

Rochina came on and proved what he is about - he can keep the ball and find space. So can can Formica, Nunes and Gomes. These players in one team is scary, as long as they are backed up by players like Etuhu and Murphy.

We have to consider why Leicester bossed the came about. Their midfield had better legs than our midfield (Pederson, Murphy).

Although he made the first goal, I'm still not understanding the faith being shown in playing Lowe wide right. With the talent sat on the bench that can unlock defences (Rochina proving when he came on) why play a centre midfielder in that position?
Good point from Morst but all we can do at present is carry on supporting.

On a positive note if we do sign Rhodes in next few days he has started well by downing the Dingles today!

Ah well - Rovers eh? - what a mess when you can't even enjoy a win because you know it only may prolong the agony of Kean in charge - he WILL let us down eventually and we all know it.

I would say the effort was there but the setup was totally wrong. Liecester had far too much of the play and on another day would have blitzed us. Morts goal was class and worth seeing. Great result but a poor performance again... It will all focus on pederson scoring and the walking stick celebration but in truth pederson was terrible!!! That was the only flash in a truely woeful game for him, giving the ball away and always looking to negative play. As for set pieces....

Leicester play football and have been robbed of 3 points and if I were a Leicester fan I would have genuine hopes of promotion.

It's not the players in general, the squad is good enough but lacking in direction and leadership. Kean really doesn't know how to generate team spirit and certainly doesn't instil confidence in the young players, picking them one game and dropping the next!!! Nunes, I thought did a job worthy of selection today, ok not the finished product but showed flashes of class on Wednesday night, come Saturday... Your dropped lad, go and sit over there on the bench...

Get a grip Kean and get some consistency, either that or pack your bags.

Great result and v Spawny, good substitution! Lowe is not a midfielder but a decent full back, shape on right was better in the second half. Olsson had a very poor first half. Bruno was quality, Dickson and Gomes decent too. Goody was ok and better than edinho as one up.

I can't stand kean! But why chant kean out after we score! Both home games players look edgy, negative chanting doesn't help. After, then fair do's.

For the 10000 who stay away, yes you don't have to face the 'your support is sh@t chants' but those chants are best directed at the none renewers than those who turn up to cheer on the team, despite the circus. And to their credit ethuhu et al are trying their best to build a rapport with the fans.

Does he really think that supporters will be chanting his name, even if he were to pull-off the impossible? Please don't ever forget that returning Rovers credibility and mid-table stability in the Premier League is where he started from, so it will never be judged as a success, period. The 10,000 that stay away now out-number those in attendance, if Venky's choose to ignore that fact then as some already state, the damage is done...

Hi frenchie, yeah I think the BBC stats were affected by the weather. We took a good pasting and it was probably 57% to Leicester. But I have witnessed games just as bad under Allardyce where we failed to get a result.
Look you guys, results breeds confidence, confidence breeds better football. So as the results continue, the confidence to perform will flow. Defence still looks a bit shakey but its managing to hold out. Mark my words they will get better. We have had a big influx of new players. They will take time to bed in. Its good to be picking up points whilst they are doing so. Other teams aren't fairing so well.

Err the person who chooses not to take them.

I can't stand kean but I enjoyed watching Gomes score and am sure young kids would be inspired by him, irrespective of the politics.

This paradox chuffing kills me !

That was a display of luck, resilience, class, ability, agility and some mean defending. The odious one will be doing cartwheels - winning is all it is about !

I have my doubts as to the overall display regards playing football, and we did look at sea on many occasions, fearing the worst once LCFC had scored, but the shirt, the badge, the players stuck in there and got the result and for that I'm quietly pleased, but none the less he has much to do in restoring any credibility as far as I'm concerned for our beleaguered and embattled club created by and enforced by Kean................
..

He just as to get it right with no room for failure on his part thus the club benefits with the rebuilding process on. I ask only of stability, and when that day arrives I will return gleefully.

I'm just gonna enjoy the win crack on it's a normal day ! :)

I wouldn't cut my nose to spite my face is all I will say, Mr Iiii1111........

But, he must achieve that which he so steadfastly speaks and sticks to, and in that I would feel perfectly justified in returning.

Steve Kean must go down as one of the most fortunate managers ever to have retained his position considering his current record at any football club thus him turning it around(should that be the case?) will have done what is required of him and for that you have to tip your hat, albeit, we don't need to like the guy, and the club will be on some sort of standing that we can ALL support.

He won't ever be forgiven, but on the evidence thus far on his removal or failure to do just that some point will arrive when I will make that decision to return ?

Like I say, I won't cut my nose to spite my face !

If he were to be sacked tomorrow the club would be no worse off. In fact they would 100% better off because the stay away fans would return, or at least the majority of them. A new manager would be given time to settle, as long as it was a new man and not an insider. The instant relief would be such a boost.

I really am wondering what some people were watching. Ruben Rochina was POOR when he came onto the field. Far too greedy and had a few very weak shots. Goodwillie is a much better player, the championship is his level, the crowd should chant for him, not Rochina. We should be playing 4-4-2 at least at home and we are better off without Kazim-Richards.

Missed the radio broadcast so I have no idea upon the performance, but I am v'surprised at the 'reporting' here.
If we play well and win draw or lose there are complaints, likewise if we play not so well (but win 2-1 against one of our acknowledged rivals), there are the same complaints.
Any other manager saying 'we were not really on our game today but 2-1 will do us', would normally get the thumbs up.
With Kean there is no chance of that. But for me, and I am a Kean out man, credit where credits due thats 7 from 9, so for me all I can say is lets take stock in 5 or 6 more games and if this return continues, just maybe he is learning and could do a job.
He cannot really be critized if the opposite side do not take their chances.
Fair do's to him, I am willing to re-evaluate him if this return continues.
That is only fair.

Yep it wasn't pretty but the points are in the bag, in some ways it reminded me of sam allardyces time when we were scraping for points and we were some were near the top, just before he was sacked.Wonder if venkys are starting to think the same way now with keanociho? going to give it one or two more games see how the dice rolls.

Lucky. Only word to describe our win. Maybe it will help us later in the season, who knows? Murphy was dreadful today. In fairness he had nobody running into space etc. but his execution was awful. You could however tell he knew it was a bad day at the office.

Pederson is a weakness and a strength! His general contribution in open play is awful now. Only reliant on flashes of brilliance like his goal. Oh how we need a no. 9 to attack set pieces too!

Dare I say it hats off to Kean for the tactical switch on the right flank after half time. Ribeiro & Lowe combined well on the overlap and threaten more than the left flank.

We really do invite teams to attack us though! Leicester are a good side but on another day & versus some of the Championship's better teams I can't help thinking our midfield will be overrun. Having no genuine natural outlet and width on the flanks will be part of our undoing.

Robinson kept us in the game. Couldn't work out the mix up at the back for Leicester's goal but Dann seemed suitably peeved. Think he has found his level too in this league. Givet is badly needed and a good job we still have him.

Nzonzi would lick it in this league. Hope he can find his way back for some bite and competition for places in midfield.

Gomes needs a partnership, but clearly has quality. Big question is will he have the legs for a long hard season? It is clear that Kean is preserving him for the long haul.

Dickson, was inconsistent but seems a good buy. Rochina must start, but where? His talent is obvious, but he reminds me of Jansen when he first came (whilst a very different player) in that he wants to beat everyone on his own. Coach that out of him a little and he could frighten plenty of teams at this level. Overall mark for team Kean. 6/10

Point is ossyrover, fans have been behind kean and venkys, well most of them at the start of the last two seasons any way ,then only to be let down with bullsheet, lies and miss information ,and all of it has been deliberate to confuse fans thats for for sure, we have been let down again and again with the false profit words from keanociho. Now we have been relegated some fans seem to think we should just blank out the last 2yrs?sorry that's impossible. Many Fans have now what i would call post traumatic stress disorder and it wont go away not until we have had councilling or at least had some answers as to why it all happened in the first place when we were more than comfortable in the PL.The facts are most fans wont return not yet any way because of past experiences with keans big mouth nonsense on how well we will do in the league, not until keans gone or he can actually show BRFC is in a top promotional position by crimbos and has proper financial backing from venkys to take us to the next level up and it will take a lot more spending in the jan window to get us back in the PL,Venkys have spent very little to show they mean what they say, they have certainly taken more than they have given they will need to show real proof before they bget the full backing of the Blackburn public, sacking kean would have absolved them over night.

It was indeed a lucky win. I for one said I would not return this season but felt the need to see just what sort of team we had. It struck me that the team were certainly playing for the manager, so they must have some faith in him.I agree the only real spark was Ribeiro who showed a lot of skill and the two well taken goals. Murphy was dire.
Kean certainly has not yet lost the dressing room when sacking is inevitable.
We should give him 10 games and reassess. From what has written by the majority we should get hammerred at Leeds, if we get something there and points at Bristol & Charlton & beat Middlesbrough then we will have to give him some credit. Keep the faith & support the team!

Facts are 3rd in the league, 7 points. Enough about the team and management. Also Fact, 13k attendances, and still a half negative atmosphere ( note I said half) well done to all true fans who still turn up and shout the lads on. The others can you honestly say you are supporters? Look up the definition in the dictionary before you comment. Sad individuals who don't understand football business and finances, what I will give you is the fact that Steve Kean is not the man for the job, but hey nor is Jack Straw for MP for Blackburn as he goes against the majority of your beliefs, however you still blindly vote for the man!!

Get real, get behind your team, and as Dave Jones said tonight "how can we not push on and win with this fantastic home crowd behind us" can we say that? Get to Ewood support your team and f@@kk the politics !!!

"If some folk are not blaming Kean, it is Venky's, or the fact we had somebody advising the owners about players etc. Conspiracy theories I do not buy"

I don't go with the conspiracy theories either; not those relating to Kean or you-know-who "owning" the club anyway - they are just nonsense.

However, you surely can't be saying Venkys are NOT responsible for what has happened? That they didn't dismantle the management of the club which led to the dubious appointment of Kean and our subsequent relegation; these are facts - even those in the press who have defended Kean and attacked the fans have never denied Venkys are responsible for that.

As for outside advice; both the owners and you-know-who have openly admitted one was advising the other. The Williams Finn Goodman letter suggested as much; third party mandate to sign players, lack of consultation with the board re removal and appointment of the team manager. The owners remember, had admitted they knew nothing about football, so someone must have been "advising" them, don't you think? - I suppose this qualifies as a theory, but based on pretty sound evidence.

You-know-who said he "slept at the training ground" when "helping" to bring in players in the Jan 11 window. Remember his quote "I left the place rocking" - an unfortunate but sadly prophetic use of words. So that is most definitely fact - we heard it from the horse's mouth.

I am not having a dig at you, but I'm afraid I can't just forgive and forget on the basis of a couple of decent results.

I don't think he has.

Changing the manager is no surprise when new owners come in, the timing seemed a bit odd at the time but not the change of manager in itself. I don't think we would have finished much different to 15th even with BFS, although it would probably have been a more "comfortable" 15th.

It isn't the change, it's who replaces him. We wouldn't even be mentioning BFS had his replacement done the business. Kidd to Souness, Souness to Hughes. OK, Ince was a bad choice, but made on sound logic. That error was addressed and BFS appointed. We all hoped they had discovered a gem in Kean; I don't think anybody would disagree they quite clearly had not.

Plus, of course, a lot of dirty washing has been aired since then.

An extra striker would be welcome but the problem against Hull and Leicester is we haven't got forward quick enough to create enough chances for the frontmen. We need an attacking midfielder with pace, like Dunny 10 years ago, maybe Formica worth a chance. Goodwillie did OK on Saturday much better than Rochina and he could do a good job at this level given a run of games.

Prat, not a supporter, just a prat And a Dingle Sorry to be so short term but you are a prize prat.. P R A T
Where we were when he took over? 10th place uinder Big Sam, Mr. Morst, and don't you ever forget it!
Hello Wild Dingle. . At least be inventive lad FFS? . I call you a Dingle and a Prat and all you can do is repeat it! Minus 4,000 thumbs and counting! . Bazzer - the answer to your question is NO! Go on admit it though - wasn't it great to watch Swansea play and Rovers had considerably more resources than them before Kean so you can't say only Barca can afford to play that way? And Baz -don't be so sad as to hold hands with Wild Dingle now? . 34th.....
Morst, the debate has been going on since the 1920s and1930s with continental passing teams then being coached by Fred Pentland and Jimmy Hogan. You probably know this anyway. The sad thing is that British football has always been suited to direct, robust football. It don't look pretty, but it works.

We should have got slaughtered. Leicester were the only side with any ideas , we were the only side with prem quality finishers. That and a huge slice of luck from the ref gave us the win. Unconvincing sums it up but we've amassed 7 points of the 45 we will need to stay up so that's a good thing.
Can't believe people slagging Peds off again and again on here and on the match. Total class his finish, and the same people are toleranting and applauding Murphy and Badwillie. What a waste of space them 2 are, but some people around me in the middle of the Riverside (you know who you are you footballing brain-deads) were asking me to stop vocally encouraging those two wasters while they think it fine to slate our best servant and a guy with 7 years under his belt at Ewood. Course they do it ever so quietly , just loud enough to be heard. Well don't expect an easy ride from me this season, I shall continue calling for keens head. If they don't fancy the football terminology I use, then stay away or move to the retirement home on Nutall St. What a bunch of miserable bast4rds!

Darener the fans singing Keano give us a wave were Leicester fans, which you'd know if you'd been there. No problem you choose not to come, but it's hard for you to then come on and criticise everything if you weren't there.....
