Rovers game called off

Blackburn Rovers pre-season friendly with NEC Nijmegen scheduled for this afternoon has been cancelled.

The decision, taken by the police and the local authorities in Nijmegen, follows the advanced threat of violence between the two sets of supporters.

Both clubs wish to express their disappointment that such a decision has been necessary.

It's coming to something when we can't have a pre-season friendly. There were probably less than a couple of hundred Rovers fans there. What are the police paid for over there ? Isn't it the police's job at all football grounds to keep the peace.

Unbelievable!! How much lower will the club sink? Threats of violence? The only violence would be against Kean and that's not likely to happen.

At times I feel so depressed when I look at what has happened to my beloved Rovers. But then, despite the fact that we have a complete imbecile sat in the managers seat and we are owned by a company that has absolutely no idea how to run a football club, I can still smile and be thankful... Life could be so much worse... I could have been a dingle!

Possibly something to do with the racist chanting that Newcastle players endured in their friendly on Saturday in the Netherlands. Dutch police had expressed their concern yesterday.

There is a huge problem in Europe with fans, even here in Switzerland, the safest country in the world, there are problems with hooligans. Dutch fans target English fans when possible. It is easy to mock until someone gets killed.

I had stopped reading blogs on this page because they were all just recycling the same comments again and again, it has become boring. But last week the comment about selling Morten Gamst as Asset Stripping made me smile all week. After his performances in the last 8 games he must be worth about £7.50! Even in our miserable position it is good to know that people still have a sense of humour .

My apologies for straying off thread, these latest events (game called off) have prompted me to comment on what might be in store for Rovers this coming season in the Championship. Coming to terms with the demise and humiliation of BRFC’s relegation has been painful for most fans. Even more painful is knowing that the same owners and manager are still in place.

My fears for the new season are that with SK still in place Rovers face the ultimate humiliation of losing home and away to Burnley and being relegated to the First Division. I hope I am wrong on all counts, but SK’s track record can rightly justify these claims, until that is, he has the guts to walk away and let a new manager take the helm.

Steve Kean is not a football manager, we all know that, and was put in place by Venkys / Anderson to oversee their 'plans' for the club. Allardyce had to go, as he or any other 'proper' football manager would not have gone along with the total farce we have seen in the last two years.......He won't walk away as he is in it for his own selfish means and doesn't give a s**t for BRFC....That's my opinion....

"Blackburn Rovers pre-season friendly with NEC Nijmegen scheduled for this afternoon has been cancelled." Why does this article not mention the game being played at Hoenderloo, a village north of Nijmegen. Is this an example of a joint attack on Rovers fans by the media and Rovers officials. Rovers fans have a great reputation on travels abroad and this seems to be an attempt to blacken the good name. Another step in the destruction of this proud club? When is this club going to take on board the feelings of the fans. They must get rid of Kean,he must go.You buy players so that they become assets to the club,Kean is a liability not an asset, Would any club buy a player that would be a liability? the answer is NO,so why have a manager who is proven to be a liability. Its nonsensical, its down right madness. Come on Shebby, prove you are not a coward or a yes man.Get rid of Kean Then fans might just begin to trust you and support the club..

Yes, I'm a typical football supporter, honest and peaceful. I go to watch the match not fight and cause trouble. It's the few idiots who cause trouble and get everyone else a bad name.

The people of Nijimegan shouldn't "put up with trouble" but it's the police's job to keep the few idiots in check so that law abiding fans can enjoy the game and the locals can get on with their lives in peace.

What do you suggest ? Do away with the game because of a few undesirables. The police are well paid for what they do, and it is their job to keep the peace no matter what you think.

Yes you are spot-on STF....the Rovers fans were infiltrated by the Ossy Cloggers Dance Group whose spokesperson said tonight that "we wanted to prove once and for all that Ossy has the biggest set of cloggers in Europe'.......

s hot property striker Jordan Rhodes could be edging closer to a move to Blackburn Rovers.

Rumours are suggesting that the young hitman is keen on a transfer to Ewood, possibly due to the reported £35,000 per week pay packet which is being touted.

While Rhodes may be interested, Huddersfield are sticking to their guns and demanding at least £6m from the promotion hopefuls.

A first bid has been seemingly snubbed by the Terriers, rumoured to be in the region of an initial £4m with bonuses taking the transfer up to £6m if Rovers bounce back to the Premier League.

Whilst this is promising news, there is negotiating and possibly compromising to be done yet – but a glimmer of hope remains for Blackburn with the new season rapidly approaching."
Best...£3 million, Rhodes £6 million and prepared to pay him £35,000 per week....Why did Venkeys' spend all last season penny pinching and getting rid of high earners if they are prepared to pay out this kind of money now ?......The mind boggles at their strategy and I guess we'll never know.
i would like to think in a perfect world, the excuse they gave about clearing debts was true, guess we'll never truly know as you said, but I think it was more of a case of zero understanding of the business and if that was true then one can only take heart and think at least they seemed to have learnt the lesson. but who can truthfully say they know?

Either way, I do hope Rhodes does sign for us, it sounds encouraging that he wants to come here - whatever his motivations.
I believe any signing when I see it...not till!! (with this lot)

Regardless of how many of our 'true' fans were involved in the alleged trouble, it's just another embarrassment for the club. And re Kean, the only way to make the Venkys get rid, is to boycott the games or just go to away games which i plan to do, until they take notice. All the protests have achieved nothing. We are just going to get lumbered with high earning mercenaries again.

I do have a theory on what they have done....however please note it is only a theory and that’s all.

In the prem we had such old high earners like Nelsen, Roberts, Salgado and others on high salaries, other higher earners include Nzonzi, Pedersen the list goes on. A drop into the championship will start a clause of 50% less on most players. The strategy in my opinion is for them to get rid of most the high earners as they won’t be happy or keep them on less 50% and do a rebuild job with a younger team capable of coming back into the prem...It’s a wage cutting exercise bit a harsh one and rebuild job with younger players. I do believe other clubs have also done this in the past.

Remember a few people can cause much disruption, and in order to prevent and contain such disruption requires manpower. When the Rovers are playing at home should they take that manpower from your town and leave you vunerable ? Just a thought.

Well the fans will be there for as long as there is a club to support.

Kean on the other hand, will be gone at the earliest opportunity. Unfortunately that seems to be when Venky's sell up and leave...

The most worrying thing is that the first point is dependant on the second point...

"DUTCH football fans caused a riot when they targeted Blackburn Rovers supporters – prompting police to cancel yesterday’s pre-season friendly match. "If the scum that can't follow Rovers even behave at a friendly then it is a sad thing! Read the story in other papers". So it was Rovers fans was it,all 80 of them. Suggest you pick other newspapers to read also, rather than dictate to others. Any body with any sense knows not to believe the written word in the press.

I think it's the dutch police panicing again about the thought of englsh thugs going over there. They have it in their heads all english football fans are hooligans. I remember going to watch a team called Telstar against Ajax in Amsterdam about 10 years ago. when it kicked off in the away end the so called fans ripped up the seats thowing them & pints of beer on the Ajax fans below us. the stewards/police did NOTHING! Nothing in the papers the day after it's only when the brits are there (coz they can be blamed for it).
