FULL TIME: Blackburn Rovers 2 AEK Athens 1

LEON Best was stretchered off for Blackburn Rovers in this afternoon's pre-season friendly as they beat AEK Athens 2-1 at Fleetwood.

Rovers' £3million summer signing went down holding his knee on 40 minutes and, after a five minute delay, was carried off the field.

He will undergo scans tomorrow as Rovers hope their £3million summer signing is not facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines. The early signs are understood to be promising.

Rovers led 2-0 at the break from a Nuno Gomes header and a brilliant Best curling strike with little happening after the break as Athens got back in the game.

Rovers struck the first blow on just six minutes as Nunes Gomes rose well at the far post to head home Marcus Olsson's left wing cross.

Leon Best had a goal ruled out for offside minutes later, after Gael Givet had headed against the bar, with Rovers dominating a tired looking Athens side.

The lead was doubled just before the half hour mark through a brilliant strike from Best. The striker latched on to a raking through ball from Murphy, to cut inside and bend a shot into the corner.

The positivity from the first half drained out of hosts on 40 minutes though as Leon Best was stretchered off with a serious looking knee injury.

A much-changed Rovers struggled to get going after the break and AEK Athens pulled a goal back through Nikolaos Kourelas, who got in behind Adam Henley, with 13 minutes remaining.

ROVERS: Paul Robinson (Jake Kean 46), Bradley Orr (Edinho 74), Josh Morris, Grant Hanley, Gael Givet (Scott Dann 46), Bruno Ribeiro, Danny Murphy (Jason Lowe 46), Paulo Jorge, Marcus Olsson (Fabio Nunes 74), Leon Best (Mauro Formica 40), Nuno Gomes (David Dunn 46) SUBS: David Goodwillie, Radosav Petrovic, Adam Henley, Ruben Rochina, Jason Lowe,

Best wishes to Leon Best and I hope its not too serious.

This is getting tiresome now. Kean is here for a few games at the start of the season at least. If we have a shocking start he has nowhere to hide this time and no more excuses.

If we start the season with a similar team that went out today, it actually looks reasonably strong. Again, leaving Kean with no excuses if we are near the bottom after 5 or 6 games.

Seems as if Nuno Gomes has settled in well and might bring a bit of class to our attack. Ribeiro might actually play a few games this season too. Murphy will control the pace and ask for the ball off the defence, something which was missing last season.

To ape Kean, I'm seeing positives.

Maybe they were 'only' a Greek team - but don't forget that AEK play in Europe most seasons and are a reasonably well experienced side. They are certainly several levels up from Fleetwood, Stanley and Rochdale so it was nice to see a win (any win) against a better team.

The club are clearly spooked that so many fans have stayed strong and not changed their minds as the season and the 20th deadline approaches. Txt's, emails etc are becoming daily now - a sure sign thousands are staying away and will not be pacified by any more meetings and promises but only the action to remove Kean. Then bridges could be built by Shabby between the fans and owners again. Its a pity Agnew has not advised him of this rather then thinking a PR blitz on fans will work - that is just insulting the fans.

Played very well first half - especially Best who looks a decent player.
.
If he's badly injured then thats going to be a really serious problem for us (Mrs D is going to have to spend a chunk of that money she's kept from player sales over the last 12 months).

Second half we seemed to play a strange 4-6-0 formation and encouraged a really abject AEK side back into the game (they looked like a team that had a good "bonding session" last night in downtown Blackpool followed by a fish supper each on the way home).

I think the new players all look okay but the squad is very very thin overall - theres alot of dross left over from last year I don't think most of the youngsters are ready for serious first team action yet.

Murphy is obviously a class act but with Dunn, Petrovic and the young "Portugese Gattuso" (looks a good prospect) - They can all play abit but theres no natural athlete in that 4 and no-one who's going to run from midfield, beyond the strikers.

Even in a lower division, Nzonzi is going to be very difficult for us to replace.

Why are Keans purchases from 12 months ago all on the bench - is it chance or maybe he now realises he bought badly

Crowd 994 - thats good wonder how many were Rovers fans ? You will know if Rovers have been successful in selling tickets on two counts
1. They will announce how many
2. If the deal is extended yet again the answer is obvious

When will the People at Ewood realise the genuine fans have been hurt by the way they have treated and it will take more than a smile and some PR to bring them back on board- Venkys go and take the entourage with you then people may forgive

Unfortunately the Venky's and Kean etc are depending on you to show they do have the support of the majority. So by going you are in affect endorsing the way they are running the club. If you really don't support them ie Kean and company then bite the bullet, admit you will be sorry to not watch next season but join the rest of us in staying away until they are gone. We all appreciate it will be a huge sacrifice but the means justify the ends. We who are staying away will feel despondent and low but we know that in the long run it will be for the benefit of all. And the sooner they see they are not wanted the sooner they may up sticks and run. But if not at least we have tried.

After last week's results a win was a must for the sake of players' morale, even if it was against an AEK side that only had three first team players feature at some point during the match. They played a lot of their Reserves and Academy players, with a 16 year old, Fountas, coming on at half-time, so probably not the toughest opposition we'll face in pre-season.

That said, with fixtures against Fleetwood, Accrington, Rochdale, AEK, Go Ahead Eagles, NEC and Cork City, you couldn't be blamed for thinking that these teams were hand-picked by Kean who'd arrogantly assume that Rovers would thump them and the owners would think he's still a brilliant manager.

Of course, I'm sure that wasn't really the case...

I envy them not pity them....after probably watching somewhere in the region of 700 to 800 Rovers matches during my time supporting the Rovers it kills me that I see them play so seldom. Only got back home once last season (the 0-2 loss to Stoke at Ewood at New Year) but even though we lost it was brilliant to be back watching the Rovers at Ewood. No SKY, no internet, just real live football!

If fans stay away this season then of course that is their decision and is respected - but it is one I could never make voluntarily. If I could watch the Rovers then I would - be it good, bad or (like the last season and a half) very ugly.

A lot of half-hearted 'fans' are using the Kean / Venkys debacle as an excuse for not supporting the team this season.

Nobody wants these owners or manager but the players on the pitch need more support than ever.

Real fans are taking it on the chin, gritting their teeth and getting down to Ewood in the knowledge that it is going to be tough but when the going gets tough etc......

There will be a better attitude 'on the terraces' with the faint-hearts out shopping instead of watchig the match.

It is good to hear that season-ticket sales are holding up in spite of the desperate militating by the faint-hearts.

A lot of half hearted fans are using the, there's nothing we can do except support whoever is in charge until they go excuse, or what's commonly known as the sheep speech. The real fans are showing no support for the pirate takeover that has been and hoping against hope that this set up get starved of support and leave, been made very difficult by hangers on though. It's good to hear publicity stunts hyping up ST sales, it shows everybody what lengths the owners will go to to catch gullible fools.

I'll second that..........They won't ruin my Saturday nights this season.
god forbid anyone would 'ruin' their saturdays by going to watch their team play. what a buffoon that man must be!?
jesus, can't you lot just let other rovers fans support their club without being told they are clueless or somehow trecherous!

HONEST JOHN'S FLEETWOOD MATCH REPORT...

DUNN - Too slow & Too fat - GET REAL DUNNY ITS OVER !!!!
JORGE - Prefers to pass back or flat / Not Gattuso by any stretch KEAN and not good enough for Chamionship yet !!!
MURPHY - Good long passes but little energy seen today
EDINHO - Young teenager - NOT good enough or strong enough - NO
NUNES - Young teenager - NOT good enough or strong enough - NO
NUNO GOMES - Decent performance / Good goal / Time will tell if he can last pace & energy of the Chamionship - JURY's OUT
BEST - Strong / Powerful / Good Touch - Liked him a lot - YES !!!!
RIBIERO - Poor / Weak / NOT fit to clean Irwin's dirty boots - PLS LEAVE
DANN - Poor positioning often & puts players under pressure with poor passes - LEAVE ASAP
FORMICA - Nobody came in for you & on this strenth NO-ONE WILL

I must talk about Ruben ROCHINA .. He was told to warm up by KEAN and BRUNSKILL ... and then saw the young teenagers brought on instead. Ruben is a skillful young player who now has a full season in the Premiership on his ticket .. He needs a chance ... Give it to him ..

KEAN you are a "HIJO DE PUTA" for the way you treat this young man ..
He does not complain when he has every right to .. PLAY HIM or let him make a successful career elsewhere .. He doesnt need your lack of judgement ruining his chances to make it in football !!!!

KEAN OUT
VENKYS OUT
HENDRY OUT
BRUNSKILL OUT
AGNEW OUT

I have to say I thought that this was an impressive result against a top-quality European side.

That was until I saw that League One strugglers Preston has also managed to beat AEK Athens and, unlike Rovers, keep a clean sheet against them.

Kind of puts your result into perspective, don't you think?
