Jorge has Gatt it all, says Blackburn Rovers boss
10:08am Tuesday 24th July 2012 in News By Andy Cryer and Chris Flanagan
STEVE Kean says Paulo Jorge reminds him of Italian World Cup winner Gennaro Gattuso after the midfielder and fellow Portuguese teenager Edinho Junior last night completed their moves to Blackburn Rovers.
The duo yesterday underwent medicals and put pen to paper on three-year contacts at Ewood Park after impressing on Saturday in Rovers’ friendly games against Fleetwood Town and Accrington.
Striker Edinho Junior, 18, appeared as a substitute in both matches and joins Rovers from Portuguese top flight side Olhanense after the clubs agreed a fee.
Jorge played for Porto’s under 19s side last season and has come through the youth ranks both with his club and with the Portuguese national team.
The 18-year-old started Rovers’ friendly against Fleetwood and Kean feels he bears similarities both in appearance and style to Gattuso, the former AC Milan and Rangers midfielder who was part of Italy’s World Cup winning team in 2006.
“He doesn’t look his age, he looks much older and shows a maturity beyond his years,” said the Rovers boss. “He is like a young Gattuso.”
Jorge and Edinho Junior will become Rovers’ third and fourth Portuguese signings of the summer after Fabio Nunes and experienced striker Nuno Gomes.
Despite their tender age Kean regards both as having the ability to come into first-team contention this season, rather than merely players for the future.
The Scot has been eager to bring in young talent since he took over as Rovers boss and believes Edinho Junior is another with the potential to impress.
“He’s got a vast amount of talent,” Kean said.
“We’ve known about him for a while.
“You can’t have too many good young ones.”
Southampton were yesterday being linked with a move for Scott Dann, but the Lancashire Telegraph understands that Rovers have heard nothing from the south coast club.
And they remain adamant that the 25-year-old, who moved to Ewood from Birmingham City last summer, is not for sale.
Dann appeared for Rovers against Fleetwood on Saturday but has now suffered relegation in two consecutive seasons, having originally signed for Blackburn to stay in the Premier League.
Rovers are eager to keep their current squad together as they bid to return to the top flight at the first attempt.
They are back in friendly action at Rochdale tomorrow night, when they will face central defender Ryan Edwards – the captain of the Rovers team that reached the final of the FA Youth Cup last season.
The highly-rated Edwards is currently on loan at Rochdale in a bid to gain first-team experience.

Gennaro Gatuso was a fantastic footballer in his prime.
Whilst i'm sure paulo jorge is a good footballer, i think we can be almost certain he is not the next gennaro gatuso. Just like mauro formica isn't the next maradonna. So why try to bull5h1t us kean? Please give us some credit.
The actual gattuso is in our age range now anyhow, sign him.

No real money being spent at Ewood as they would try to make us believe just more freebies!! What about our home grown own youngsters in the academy then Kean - this does not send a good message out to them after all 'big mouth' your supposed to have been the one that spotted Jones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We heard similar great proclamations after the signings of Bruno Ribiero, Simon Vukcevic, Petrovic and Goodwillie last summer and look what happened. He was left reliant on those he didnt sign, and with a threadbare squad we meekly surrendered to relegation winning only one of our last 10 games of the season.

Not only has Kean's assessment of these players been way off the mark so far, it also heaps unnecessary pressure on the players' shoulders. Maybe those attending matches next season - whether that be home or away - could wear t-shirts bearing the slogan, 'Steve Kean... a poor man's Comical Ali' or other such likenings.

granted, kean doesn't help himself from a PR point of view, but you lot really have some issues with interpretation. saying that Jorge is like a young Gattuso, primarily based on his looks (but also probably on playing style) is simply not the same as saying he's as good as Gattuso. kean choses player comparison to give a bit of context to the players he signs. he could just as easily said he's a combative midfielder with dark hair and a beard, but kean clearly feels it's more useful and descriptive to suggest a player likeness. just relax and find a bit of perspective

As far as I can remember Colin Hendry served this club well and has gone through hell and back over the last few years. We as supporters of this club, and most on this website, showed our compassion for a true legendary defender during in his dark days and now trying to come back into the club and help out he is instantly hated..??
Well if that is the case....out with that programme girl in the jack walker upper tier, yeah the one with the dark hair....she is Keans puppet too!!!
some of us need to grow up a little and start to love the club!! The club is the supporters and the history....Owners come and go, Managers come and go, legends will always be remembered and I for one think Hendry is one of them. In his day he wore his heart on his sleeve and through his body on the line week in week out!!!
The others Black, Singh and Agnew I can't comment but I wouldn't give them stick the minute they walk in the door!

I think Rovers fans are probably more supporters of racism than their football team. I think they will never be happy until Venkys and all associated are gone and Ron Atkinson is put in charge.
Ron Atkinson was a pioneer in introducing black players to our game,Think Brendan Batson,Viv Anderson and Cyrille Regis at West Brom.At Villa when they finished runners up in the Premier League 9 or 10 of their squad were coloured.
As for Ewood it is the Quality of player we are not happy about nothing else.

Colin Hendry hasn't returned to help the club. He's returned to help himself and his new best mate Kean. By praising, backing and working with our disgusting manager Hendry is knowingly sticking two fingers up at the thousands of supporters who want Kean gone. He ought to be ashamed of himself after being at the club when Jack Walker was here and now he's working for the Venky's. Sorry Colin but you've thrown your legendary status in the bin for backing Kean. Look at Garner - that's what a true legend should be doing - giving his backing to the supporters.

.
i do know that when madame desai walked up to the premier lounge she was personally greeted and welcomed by tom finn and she totally blanked him and walked past him - maybe she was being racist by your criteria.
.
sure there will be racists in our crowd like there are racists across society, on council estates, suburbs and our in the posh houses, in pubs, clubs and golf clubs etc. - rovers crowd will reflect society. i have been quite encouraged at ewood in the number of brown faces in the crowd in recent years - in no way does it reflect the percentage in the town - but it is getting better and as far as i am aware the incidents of grief for our asian supporters are now mercifully few.
.
the racism which i have heard surrounding rovers applies to a sneering media with there references to "indian chicken farmers" this applies shamefully to some on the bbc, sky as well as printed media. equally, the most i have heard from supporters comes from the likes of our BNPley pals at the cobbled end of the m65.
.
i don't think the distrust was because they were indians, like i dont think the distrust at leeds was cos ken bates looked like captain birdseye or at newcastle cos ashley was a large chap......the distrust was there because they were an unknown quantity - if anything it was xenophobia (a fear of the unknown) as opposed to racism - and that fear of the unknown has been proven as they have been shown to be dreadful owners.
.
i do not have a racist bone in my body - i cant stand venkys cos they are destroying my beloved blackburn rovers. my contempt for kean is not cos he is scottish - but because he is a useless liar that promises the world and delivers nothing. i have no issue with nobody from malaysia - but if shebby turns out to be another useless interferer - i will have contempt for him too.....this has nothing to do with any of their heritage - but is simply born out of damaging something i love.
.
please note before you reply i have not descended to personal insults to either yourself or those that are running our club - so, if you do reply i hope you will be equally rational in your argument and not respond by name calling etc.

Many of you will have lived with the ups and downs of Rovers, some of you will have cried with both happiness and sorrow. Those that have lived through much more of our clubs great history are in a better position than I to make this comment, but it needs to be said and it needs to be heard. I have never been as ashamed of Blackburn Rovers fans as I was in the 2011/2012 season.
I want you to put to the back of your mind any thoughts of unrest or anger at this comment if you had any. The first time I noticed a change in the fans during a game, beyond the normal calls for Kean’s head, was during the Rovers v Man City game. At half time, we amazingly were holding our ground against the (unbeknownst to us at the time) league champions. Let’s face it, City have spent an unprecedented amount of money over the past few seasons to bring in some of the biggest and best players in the world. Any team should be congratulating themselves for holding out for 45 minutes against such a team. The moment the first goal went in, regardless of the fact that we were playing incredibly poorly, the mood in the stadium changed and the fire was lit. The second started the fuse and the third set off the explosion. The ball had barely hit the back of the net before the uproar; louder than a Hercules airplane flying 10 feet above the stadium; it erupted not from the healthy sized City crowd but from our own supporters. It’s no wonder the fourth goal went in with such a disturbing reaction from the home teams own fans.
I want to say now, that I was unfortunately right there with many of you in calling for Kean’s head on a plate baked to a nice crisp with a Venky’s chicken stuffed in his mouth. This was however my only outburst of the season. At that point I thoroughly accepted defeat. 0 – 3 at just over 70minutes against such a high quality team is defeat. Does this mean we give up? Never. Granted, the season was only a month or so in but we should know from experience that goal difference can still count at the start of the season as it can at the end. Coming back to my original point, the continuing unrelenting heckling and abuse which came from fans during games was in my opinion disgraceful.
Before a game, after a game, during the week, at breakfast, at midnight or even while driving down the street past the stadium; these are the times which are acceptable to protest against the owners and manager (or anyone else for that matter). During a game, when the players need your help and support, is never the time to brandish flags and chant for a manager’s dismissal. I’m sure I’m not alone here in being sick and fed up with some fans constant negativity. Their intent seems to be to bring the players' moral to an all-time low and let me be the first to tell you, you succeeded. We looked tired, depressed and truly beaten for the majority of home games. Whilst, for once, our away record was improving. You only have to look at the Christmas period to notice how we were playing better and the results we got from it. But, once again, back on home turf our performance dipped.
I call on all of you, whoever you are, to keep the protests to outside of game time. Let us be the best supporters, which is often claimed, of our team. Let us join in celebration when we succeed and cheer support and encouragement when we fail. Arte et Labore should not just be applied to employees at Blackburn. We as fans should adhere to and live up to our own motto. If this means biting our tongue for 90minutes then so be it!

The theory that if everyone turned up to Ewood and shouted Ra Ra Rovers all of the problems would go away is a lovely fairy story, during a match I like to act like this. When I come back and reflect I realise that the supporters are not the problem, the team and ultimately the manager are.

Any team should be congratulating themselves for holding out for 45 minutes against such a team. may i remind you this was the same rovers team under kean that went to middle eastlands and we had our first shot (if you could call it so) or backpass at joe hart on 90 minutes. equally, it was the same rovers side that rolled over and had its tummy tickled at white hart lane when kean said we were going to get a result and we wouldn't just surrender - clue first team to not have a shot at goal in a premiership game for over 10 years.
.
finally, it was the same team managed by the same bloke who told us we were going to go for a wembley final in the league cup and we were going to kick some a_rse against cardiff and we took 1,000 supporters down, to be subjected to an abject performance and then to be told that we opted to throw the game...and then when supporters asked for their money back were told no way.....if this was a product you had bought in a shop kean to trading standards under the sale of goods act.
.
so, yes never before have i been so ashamed to call myself a rovers supporter....but it has nothing to do with the supporters, but more to do with the clueless, lying idiot who is calling the shots at the club i have supported for over 40 years.

Throw away remarks or not, it is sad that Kean seems to want to continue to try to rally the troops in a manner that has been irksome before! Hats off to the guy for persistence, but come on Steve please engage brain before putting mouth into gear (and no nobody has spiked your fuel tank either).

After saying that I believe some of them are Burnley fans stirring up hatred and unrest, unfortunatley some Rovers fans are like lemmings and just follow..
It's easy to understand why people post various theories regarding the level of involvement Kean actually has at the club. Personally, I don't believe he's a shareholder, co-owner or working for Glasgow gangsters. I think his continued employment is down to nothing more than a stubborn, old woman sat in Pune who doesn't like to be told what to do, especially as it's highly unlikely she'll ever get another 'yes man' with as brown a nose as Kean. Perhaps that explains all the licking of his top lip!
However, as I and a few others have already alluded to on these pages, Kean can't be sacked now that he's been given the owners' backing. Only poor performances will warrant a re-think which begs the question, if the team does under-perform, exactly how bad would they be willing to let things get before sacking Kean?

He is playing a game within a certain set of rules (who is pulling the strings and to what the game is, is another set of questions !), where he has been given a toy to play with he never ever dreamt he would ever have the opportunity.
His continuous overly excited comments and reaction to his new unknown signings and in this dream position of fantasy football he finds himself in....dreams of a new Rooney or Irwin or Pele....also wanting to give the impression has THEE talent spotter of all times....it is what makes him feel he his playing his part and making the most of it of the opportunity of course.
He is amazing lucky his wee game has lasted so long now...sadly for Blackburn Rovers.

granted, kean doesn't help himself from a PR point of view, but you lot really have some issues with interpretation. saying that Jorge is like a young Gattuso, primarily based on his looks (but also probably on playing style) is simply not the same as saying he's as good as Gattuso. kean choses player comparison to give a bit of context to the players he signs. he could just as easily said he's a combative midfielder with dark hair and a beard, but kean clearly feels it's more useful and descriptive to suggest a player likeness. just relax and find a bit of perspective
as for the others, in the list, i'm pretty sure (paraphrasing of course):

I agree Jones was a top keeper. I remember him breaking his leg whilst at Ewood and I think that might have stalled his move, due to a hitch on the medical. I also remember Paul Bradshaw replacing him and he turned into a good keeper too. I think he might have ended up at Wolves in the top division.

The theory that if everyone turned up to Ewood and shouted Ra Ra Rovers all of the problems would go away is a lovely fairy story, during a match I like to act like this. When I come back and reflect I realise that the supporters are not the problem, the team and ultimately the manager are.
e.g. the best supporters are found in the lower reaches - why is that?

the managers involved were Furphy, Lee, and Jim Smith. When you look at the performance of these guys, and others that followed later, it starts to put into perspective the 'status' of the current manager.
I would therefore ask all those who condemn the likes of me, a staunch anti-Kean man tbh, how supporting him is the correct road to follow. I would suggest that many posters are unaware of the history of this club and have very little knowledge of that history.
I also note that many of the 'let's follow the team' brigade do not post outside of office hours.

Only poor performances will warrant a re-think which begs the question, if the team does under-perform, exactly how bad would they be willing to let things get before sacking Kean?
.
I lifelong friend of mine has had access to the documentation given to the PL, FA and the govt and he said on the SK ownership point the proof within the document is "irrefutable" - that is one of the reasons why Scudamore got off his backside and arranged a meeting with the bigwigs at the FA as soon as he saw it.

It would be very interesting to know which agents pockets are being lined with this sudden influx of Portuguese players.
Pini is Israeli and was linked to Venky's early days in some advisory capacity.
This might be his pay-off. He counts 'em in, and he counts'em out!
Tal Ben Haim, at Pompey, is his man. £36k per week and £1m a year image rights. Mr Zahavi is very good at what he does.
I'm sure all these Portuguese guys are well remunerated (Gomez £2m/year I heard).
Fascinating days for me. I'm not angry as much as before. I try to watch the immoral behaviour of the individuals who seemingly run BRFC. On the other hand I suspect that this is how the game is run now, because I don't hear too much from the EPL, FA or LMA on recent events.

Shabby thinks he's Ronnie Clayton, Kean no doubt thinks he's Sir North Stand, and Colin Hendry thinks he's good for a tenner (grand, that is). Think again.
granted, kean doesn't help himself from a PR point of view, but you lot really have some issues with interpretation. saying that Jorge is like a young Gattuso, primarily based on his looks (but also probably on playing style) is simply not the same as saying he's as good as Gattuso. kean choses player comparison to give a bit of context to the players he signs. he could just as easily said he's a combative midfielder with dark hair and a beard, but kean clearly feels it's more useful and descriptive to suggest a player likeness. just relax and find a bit of perspective
as for the others, in the list, i'm pretty sure (paraphrasing of course):

I think Rovers fans are probably more supporters of racism than their football team. I think they will never be happy until Venkys and all associated are gone and Ron Atkinson is put in charge.
Have you absolutely no shame? Trying to suggest racism as you have all along. The "dark forces" Steve Kean and Jerome Anderson allude to.
You are nothing short of a disgrace calling decent fans racists when you are only doing it to fulfil your own selfish sick ends.
And people wonder why the fans detest Steve Kean?

Even if Walter Mitty has 5% of the shares, so what? The other shareholders left after Jack bought the club, and increased the share capital own approx1%, giving, allegedly, the Venkys 94%, and still a total controlling interest.
I still think the truth is yet to come out about who actually controls our club, AND WHERE ALL THE MONEY IS GOING.

It doesn't now matter who they employ from now on, some of you will want them out immediately....

I think you have to come to terms re conman Kean, that his ability to engage his brain with mouth or show signs of wisdom are limited. I spent years on the Blackburn End living Gendry for his desire, goals n never say die attitude but that was then.
A lot has happened since then that won't ever change what he did for the club but will stop him bei g accepted at our club again.
Why did a certain Jack Walker insist he never step foot in Ewood again? Why have other Rovers legends said that there was more to Mr Hendry than met the eye and he was not as loved within the club as we would of been led to believe?
You can't deny he has suffered with the sad loss of his wife but that was no excuse to do or say the things he has since?
Ripping off pensioners to feed his addiction, not the makings of a true genuine man!
Do the BRFC press officers think we will buy into the pro-Keane comments, do they think we'll go out and buy season tickets now after these extremely dodgy Portugese brown paper envelope signings?
How many tickets have we officially sold, I bet that figure is exaggerated so we are led to believe that the rivers supporters are gullible and buying into Keane?
What is wrong with blooding some of our own youngsters into the first team after their good season last year? At least they know the demands of what is to be expected, unlike our foreign invasion of no hopers.
I really don't like what is happening at Ewood and will not give a penny of my money until Keane, Anderson, Agnew and cronies have gone.
Nothing less would suffice.
I can't help feeling that Venkys had no idea what they were letting themselves in for and have been led a merry dance by the current arses in charge.

Only poor performances will warrant a re-think which begs the question, if the team does under-perform, exactly how bad would they be willing to let things get before sacking Kean?
Surely if such an irrefutable document proving that Steve Kean was breaking any rules existed, and it had been passed on to the relevant authorities, then action would've been taken. I don't want Kean as our manager anymore than you do but let's not encourage rumours that quite clearly can't be true as it just makes us all look petty.

Have you absolutely no shame? Trying to suggest racism as you have all along. The "dark forces" Steve Kean and Jerome Anderson allude to.

As for presenting Hendry as some kind of immortal warrior, I think that shows naivety in the extreme. The author is either a spotty youth or a mawkish old hag with a fixation. Either way, it is someone who has no idea of, or any history of, collision or combat sports. Those sports teach respect, and the author has none.
