Don Mackay did a decent job with the money he had to play with, King Kenny and Ray Harford did well (but had money to spend). Souness and Hughes did decent jobs...as did Big Sam with the money he had. I think the best suited for the club would be one from Hughes, Souness and Big Sam. WORST - STEVE KEAN - WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT!!!

Gordon Lee's up and at em style was very good to watch and brought results.
The more cultured style of Jim Smith also great to watch and brought results.
Don Mackay did an excellent job before moving aside for Kenny but one manager Ken Furphy with little money picked Rovers off the floor.Just relegated to the 3rd division for the first time with a very poor side Rovers were down and out and Furphy shook them to teir foundations and rebuilt a club.
I know kenny will win the vote but you can't mention great Rovers managers without giving credit to Ken Furphy.

I agree his performance with team(No players talk bad about him) and in the ground ( he is so positive , control his anger, good with ground staff and reffere, good with players, good with FANS(never angry with any people outside or in public during the match and post match section till now )

i reckon for his ability to defy gravity and some wonderful signings (nelsen, samba, bentley, bellamy) its got to be sparky, i remember furphy with affection, and promotion with lee....apart from the obvious 95 i thought we played our most exciting football under jim smith. mind you kendall did a cracking job too.
.
apart from the last 20 months we have been very lucky - even the bad ones haven't been totally disastrous - that was until december 2010...but then again keano is not only being sued by sam allardyce - i hear trading standards are thinking about action as someone has complained about his worthiness to call himself a manager.
.
i think john bond and chris waddle deserve honorable mentions too.

Blue and white as always. You know when you and your band of about 5 mates are spitting your dummy out each match (prob sat at home) - well I'm one of the FANS that are cheering our lads on.

Kean did pretty well last season with all the sh!t he had to deal with, and now he's signed some good (albeit older) players to strengthen the squad, he'll show you what he can do.

We haven't had Jacks Money for years and still managed to punch our weight, due to a good Management structure.

If Venkys had invested like they promised and appointed a decent manager we would probably be still in the Premier. They have , with assistance ripped the Club to bits.

Although its amirable that you still feel the passion, I think you need to take off your blue tinted glasses. Kean didn't do well and it wasn't about the sh#t he had to put up with. It was to do with the sh#t that he bought!. Stats don't lie, ask Kean he's the one thats always quoting them.
You seem happy to be lied to and don't seem to bothered that the people doing so, line their own pockets in the process. So why don't we draw the curtains and forget its happening.

Your last sentence sums the whole state of today's football. Home grown talent! That's where it all went wrong. The influx of all these mercenary foreign players, in it only for the money . Players of old stayed with their clubs through thick and thin, highs and lows. Too many examples to state. But now relegated teams lose their players at the drop of a hat. They are responsible for the slide but just move on following the money. But in the Rovers case they have a point. Totally mismanaged by a man not capable of putting a group of players together to form a team even though the players themselves were fully capable of surviving the drop. The only way for the Rovers to rise again is for a complete change of management or at least .........Get rid of Kean!

If you read about the Rovers beginnings then that is actually how Rovers developed into a force in the first place. We signed amateur (professionals) mercenaries from Scotland and paid them money under the counter so that it would not affect their amateur status. Some things never change - corruption at the club then and now...?

He added that he was looking forward to picking a point or two off Jim Iley and has received messages of support from Brian Kidd.

Cone Head said he was relishing the challenge of taking on King Kenny in the Hall of fame as he had spotted some potential weaknesses which he planned to exploit, and was probably going to win Manager of the Month every month for the rest of his life.

Sorry Frenchy totally disagree...football under Kendall was dire, yes we got results (mainly 1-0) but I'd sooner watch paint dry.

Toss up for me between Jim Smith and Ken Furphey.....smith with exciting attacking full backs and Ken totally transforming the club....with some fantastic signings.... Jones and Field if I'm not mistaken.

So you do not enjoy the spectacle of the underdog soaking up enormous pressure and pinging a late goal to snatch a 1-0 win?
Did we not have to sell Kevin Stonehouse to pay the electric bill? And against this background Kendall gave us two great winning mentality years.
So Kendall gets my vote, and Kean is my second favourite manager. On the basis that my favourite is ANY other Rovers manager.
I see Allardyce is still splitting opinion and some folks refuse to let it go.

"our less intelligent fans"? Wow! Where does that leave you then?
Blue and white as always. You know when you and your band of about 5 mates are spitting your dummy out each match (prob sat at home) - well I'm one of the FANS that are cheering our lads on. Kean did pretty well last season with all the sh!t he had to deal with, and now he's signed some good (albeit older) players to strengthen the squad, he'll show you what he can do. Now off you go to cry about how not every Rovers fan agrees with you... pathetic
Not every fan, but certainly the majority, fortunately. When you have been going to Ewood for nearly sixty years then you can tell me I am wrong.
Oh can I? Thank you. I'll hang on another 30 years then and somehow MY OPINION will count will it? Or somehow, magically I will be transformed into the all-knowing football fan that you are. We have had some good times in the past couple of decades, largely due to Uncle Jack's cash. But that seems to have deluded some of you into thinking we were in it for the long haul. We are, lets face it, a small Lancastrian town and we need to get used to punching at our own level again - Cash can only get you so far, passion and true support gets you further and the 'majority' that you include yourself in has none of it
No

Good sound management, with a great scouting system, backed up by a fantastic youth policy gets you further which is what we had.

As for support it's your prerogative as to whether you go or not.

As long as our present disgusting manager stays I will not be going
In terms of good signings

I didn't think anyone could top the genius that was Brian Kidd and then along came Steve Kean to blow him out of the water.

Honorable mention for Paul Ince - he was doing a great job until his untimely sacking.

Come on my friend......Kendall was brilliant in 1979-80. he took us out of the Third Division at the first attempt and the second half of that season was superb - we were mid-table at Christmas but then we went on a great run and won 14 and drew one of their next 15 games which shot us up the table and got us promoted in second place. Plus we had an FA Cup run to the 5 th round .

Then in our first season back in the 2nd division Kendall almost took us to back-to-back promotions and we only lost out on goal difference on the last day when we beat the other BRFC but Swansea won at Preston. Great days. Plus he brought Duncan McKenzie to Ewood, now he was an exciting player and a real star still when he was a Rover.

How can you say all that was dire and would rather watch paint dry? Oh for some of that now...

Perhaps because at the last minute I decided to drive down to Bristol and back on my own....oh what a day!

No doubt he was a successful manager and he did bring in Mckenzie(remember him sitting on the ball) but Frenchy, the old romantic in you is showing....lost count of how many. 1-0 or 0-0 I remembered seeing....great defence must admit.

Mark Hughes by a country mile for everything he did on such a tight budget. Got us playing some great football.

Bob Crompton - Won us the old second div and the FA cup!!!

But a special mention for Thomas Mitchell. Won us 5 FA Cups and ensured that we were the only team in the land with the honour of having our crest on the corner flags!

yes you are right about the 0-0s....I think we had three out of our last four games which really were the games that cost us promotion to the first division. (Plus we lost to Swansea away before the 0-0s)....

But can you imagine this team or last seasons going three or four games and not conceding......now that would be a treat!

King Kenny is the obvious choice.
Led us into the Premier League and went on to win it with us.

Though both Mark Hughes and Big Sam in recent years have performed excellently, the former in particular, giving the circumstances he was managing under.

Also a special mention to Souey. Although it went a bit pear-shaped at the end, don't forget he took us back up, won a trophy and gave us a couple of fantastic Euro adventures.

Xander_ says...

I'm only old enough to remember from Don Mackay onwards, so my vote would be Kenny Dalglish for obvious reasons. Souness would be my next choice due to him bringing us back up and winning the League Cup with us.
