Rovers looking for a fourth Iberian
7:53am Tuesday 17th July 2012 in News
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
BLACKBURN Rovers are on the trail of their fourth Portuguese player of the summer – with Porto midfielder Paulo Jorge having started a trial yesterday.
The 18-year-old, who played for Porto under 19s last season, has come through the youth ranks at his club and the Portuguese national team and will be given a chance to shine by Blackburn over the coming days.
Jorge, whose full name is Paulo Jorge Gomes Pereira, is expected to feature in a behind closed doors friendly against Macclesfield tomorrow, where the majority of Steve Kean’s current squad will be given a run out.
Jorge is understood to prefer playing in deep central midfield role and has been described by Portuguese sources as a tough-tackling midfielder.
Rovers have already signed two Portuguese players this summer in striker Nuno Gomes from Braga and winger Fabio Nunes from Portimonese, while they continue to chase Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva.
Silva, 23, is under contract at Sporting and is continuing negotiations with them this week, with Rovers hopeful he will tell his employers he wants a switch to Ewood Park.
Rovers would only have to pay minimal compensation for Jorge, should he impress at Brockhall this week, as they continue their attempts to build a youthful squad, with some experience among it.
Jorge is relatively unknown away from his home club but has international pedigree at youth level, having most recently played for Portugal under 19s.
Jorge will be joined on trial by Malaysian defender Titus James Palani later this week as he looks to become the first from his country to make it in English football.
Rovers pre-season preparations will continue back in England after returning from an intense summer camp in Austria over the weekend.
Rovers fans will get their first glimpse of the club’s new signings at Saturday’s friendly double header against Fleetwood and Accrington Stanley at the Crown Ground on Saturday.
Danny Murphy, Leon Best, Nunes and Gomes should all feature, as should trialists Jorge and Palani.
Rovers remain on the look-out for a versatile defender to add to their squad before the start of the new season, while they will look elsewhere for a central midfielder if their attempts to land Silva prove unsuccessful.

On behalf of all Rovers supporters, would you please ask Steve Kean why he has not felt the need to at least make a public apology regarding his abhorrent management of the club we love. In all honesty ( and sincerely) without malice, it makes my stomach turn when article after article mentions that kean has gone here or done this and that, shot over to Portugal etc. I cringe when the phrase 'Rovers boss' is applied to him. Surely Andy, every time the telegraph does approach Kean, or interviews him face to face, questions should constantly be put to him until answers are finally unearthedl. Their is no rocket science involved here. The supporters deserve to hear Kean say that he bogged up, they need to hear him say that in any normal football club his position would have been untenable months ago, and he would, by now, have been sacked. No true Rovers supporter, whether a mouthy dissenter like me, or the hundreds who have been worn down by the 'Lack of kean PR machine.' {catchy eh?) will ever be happy with kean in charge, because that would mean accepting, and, being a part of his sad delusional world. He has the job, he has the wage, but whilst at Rovers, unless he accepts that Northerners value honesty, pride and hard work and he crawls, begging for forgiveness and another chance. He will never have the kudos of a top rated football manager because his record at Rovers will haunt him as well as us. I could not live like that, no Lancastrian I know could live like that....... why should we have to put up with someone like that.
Every Match, let the Rovers Roar KEAN OUT!!!!!

Could be some really good news if Blueblood is right about Mrs Desai stepping down from the Rovers board. A certain Mr Kean would be very exposed then without his Indian security blanket.
We would have to hope the Brothers Rao could make the right decisions on a new manager and how the club should be run.
Into the unknown again maybe but it has got to be better than now.

clubs have trials all the time. so what's wrong with trialing another midfielder. if we lose someone like nzonzi and didn't at least start to try and look at other options, everyone would be in uproar at the negligence.
as for the portuguese connection, with kean having spent a lot of time there during his ealry coaching days, he probably has a network upon which to tap. so it's not particularly surprising that most of his efforts are focused there at the moment.
so far, we have people criticising bringing in older players, people criticising bringing in younger players, people criticising bringing in foreign players, people criticising bringing in uk players that have chosen to step down to the championship, people stating as a fact that the old squad will leave etc etc etc... must be quite difficut just trying to walk around with such jerky knees!
this is a pretty uneventful story, so why not see it as that for a change. we are bringing one or two in for a trial. if they impress, they might get a contract, if not then they wont. other than that i can't really see any issue here. i await the enlightening from the rest of you though!

Write that word down and when your back at the club ask someone , the cleaner maybe,(if there still is one employed after you relegated the club) what a defender is in footballing terms!!!!!!
We may need one or two.
Just a thought.

The only action we can take is to stay away from Ewood Park and that isn't until next month. In the meanwhile we are all getting agitated and upset by all the rumours and nothing stories being bandied about.
Keanwill do his thing irrespective of whatever we sy. o I sa just let him get on with it. the proof of the pudding will b in the first game at Ipswich. Then we will see that nothing has changed and we will be in for another rough season, probably culmunating in another relegation. Then perhaps we will finally see the end of Kean, but I am not putting any money on that!

we all know that kean and venkys have been beyond poor so far, but that doesn't take away from the fact that they are better placed to be making recruitment decisions than i am.
as for the malaysian guy - there is absolutley no reason whatsoever that a player from malaysia wouldn't be a decent player. this guy may not turn out to be good enough, but absolutley no problem in having a look.
we're not (and rarely have been) in a position to pick and chose from a perfect selection of choices, so let's just crack on where we can and prepare as best we can for teh coming season where kean will start off as manager and venkys will still be the owners. beyond that, let's hope we win some games and undergo a startling transformation in fortunes. if not, let's hope we can at least start with a change in the management.

But this is the last thing I have. No-one is listening to our protests.
I have one question for you, that you must answer: when does it get bad enough for you to withdraw? If Fester takes us down to Division 1? Will you still be renewing when he is confirmed manager? What would it take? Some of us have reached our stomach churning limit already. I cannot stand the mere sight of his odious grinning smug face. He is laughing at YOU. UR Insane.

But am still following these threads with interest. Every now and then the usual Kean suspects come out the woodwork to try and stir things up. We who genuinely support the club and not this corrupt regime are trying our best to stay positive. But it is very hard work, especially during a close season when there is no football to watch.

I've just realised what you remind me of. Those little old ladies sat in front of the guillotine in revolutionary France, busy knitting whilst the aristocracy or in this case Blackburn Rovers go before the executioner to have their head cut off. If I remember my history correctly many of the revolutionaries got their comeuppance in the end. Just as Kean and company and all their supporters will do eventually. So it's the supporters who are totally to blame? Of course, our mistake. That letter Paul Hunt sent to the Venkys telling them exactly what they should do, but they completely ignored it, that was the fans fault I take it?
Relegation? All the fans fault of course. And you say it's the acute obtuseness of the fans which will be to blame for any bad results this season as well? Wow, those fans have got a lot to answer for.
What about........the acute obtuseness of the owners though? Does that not come into it?
Every other club in the world would have sacked the manager by now, every single club. But not Rovers, which has other huge clouds over it anyway. But the owners aren't being stubborn or stupid by not doing what every other football club would have done ages ago? And that's because it's not the owners, it's the fans.
What planet are you on?
You don't seem to get people or football at all. It doesn't matter what anyone says; the fans will only be placated when Steve Kean goes. End of debate. You or I can't change that, it's just how it is now. It's football.
It seems that the Venkys are deliberately giving themselves an impossible task. Why? How stupid are they?

How is the weather in India, are you part some sweat shop of English students eeking out a meagre living supplying barely believable positive posts.
I haven't posted for some time myself, but first match I remember aged 6, 1968 Norwich at home. I remember it because one of The Norwich players had white boots on quite novel for the time. What about you Iconoclast what detail would you share from your first BRFC memory?
I can see what is happening here, Kean is a megalomaniac, and is now busily surrounding himself with Portuguesse speaking sychophants. Because he knows the langage he can maintain control and develop quite a powerful clique in that dressing room. Best is another from Coventry days and so on, and so forth.
Until someone can provide a rational explanation for Kean still being the manager of this team or in fact any team, I am open ear'd to any conspiracy however fanciful.
I dont live locally so only manage a few games per season, so it is easy for me to say that I would choose to stay away not because of what they have done to the club but the continual contempt and humiliation heaped upon decent ordinary people.

But, like many others you talk as if its our 'right' to be promoted to the Prem.
Not quite sure why this is so, but more than likely due to the 'Jack Walker' factor.
I can think of many more teams that have a much right and moreso than ourselves. They may not have the equal calibre of squad that we have (so it is opinioned), but by and large they have footballing people running them and capable managers. That is what will bridge the gap (if indeed there is one).
You seem to suggest that the support can make up the difference (i.e. mask Keans deficiencies), but I think that his peformances up to now can no way be propped up by mere vocal support. The void is too wide.
However, we shall see come August.
PS: I would prefer that all Kean out chants be silenced during and before playing time, simply so that the management and team can perform unhindered as that is only fair, when the assessment of their performances can be evaluated without due cause being blamed upon the supporter.

Last season was a total joke. Kean should have been fired and everyone knows that. He lied consistently and treated the supporters like enemies. He stood up for Venkys when he should not have had to and had to answer questions which managers should not be getting involved in.
However, Venkys have at least put a backroom team in place now. Admittedly I do not know anything about them, but at least we have some sort of structure to manage the side of the business that Kean should never have been involved in.
Also I have been impressed with the Danny Murphy signing and am unconvinced about the other signings thus far. Time will tell. But thats what makes the start of every season exciting, did we sign a dud or gem. Every team mostly signs duds.
A lot of people are saying that we should be spending all the money that we received from transfers and that Venkys are pocketing it. Do fans want the club to go bust? I know we have parachute money, but what happens if spend a load of money on players who turn out to be flops. Venkys are right not to blow the money on players who are not good enough for the premiership (if they were, they would not be going to a championship team). We also need to reduce our wage bill now that we don't have the TV money and I would have no problem whatsoever in selling Robinson (Bunn and Kean perfect replacement), Nzonzi (over rated, not a winner of a player, just moans on the field), Hoilett (quality but out of contract so no choice, hope he joins english club so Rovers get the money), Pedersen (not up to it and on high wages) Formica (v average player IMO, does not get involved), Martin Olsson (wants to leave so let him go) We need to cut our wage bill to survive if that is what fans want. We also got some quality youth players who deserve a chance. Would some fans prefer a situation where we spent fortune, paid high wages, missed promotion and went in to administration just so they could say...I told you so! A big part of everyones lives would then be missing.
Our squad for the championship should be:
GK Bunn/Kean
RB Orr/Lowe
CB Dann/Givet/Hanley/Ja
ck O'Connell
LB Henley/Josh Morris
RM Vuckevic (other youth team suggestion?)
CM Murphy/Petrovic/Silv
a/Lowe/J O Sullivan(or other youth player
LM M Olsson/Nunes
Striker Rochina (our best player imo, needs to play up front)/Goodwillie (should do good in championship)/Nuno Gomes (the sheringham/hughesie player)/Leon Best
So if we get silva and maybe a right winger, we should be strong.
For all the booers, I booed at my tv while watching at 8am on a sat morning in Canada. But this season, please just don't go to the matches if you are going to boo. If after 7/8 games we are struggling, then go ahead. But for all the new players joining, it is embarrassing and detrimental to a strong team spirit needed to get out of this division. I for one am looking forward to following the team, be it that it will be hard to see all the goals now.

Sorry mate, this has happened too many times for people to think you are genuine.
The truth of the matter is this; it doesn't matter what you say, or I say, or Santa Claus says, the fans aren't coming back whilst Steve Kean is there. Some feel so strongly about it - they love their Rovers so much, and they want it back, and they want to go to the match - that huge amounts of fans, hardcore fans, are willing to carry on showing their vocal displeasure with him on match days as well.
I don't think there will be many fans who don't join in with "Steve Kean out" chants. I'm guessing the players will get cheered, as is right, but our manager is looking at a season of serious boos.
The club needs to face reality on this situation, rather than vainly posting on sites like this. The fans have made up their minds. This is football. Every other club in the world understands that. Our club knew that obviously when it was under the masterful steering of John Williams and before that the amazing generosity of Jack Walker. We are the only club in the world that doesn't understand that any more though.
So we instead get new posters telling us we need to give Steve Kean another chance. You are wasting your time though - nothing will change unless he goes. End of debate and that's just the cold hard truth.
Why would the owners not do the obvious therefore and get the fans flooding back? It just doesn't make any sense. Stupidity only washes so long as an excuse.

But, you start by saying Kean should have gone. However, he is not, and presumably influential in who is coming in.
I have a problem with this, as I am assuming you are still unhappy with him, but willing like myself, to let the first 5 - 10 results dictate his fate .
If he is to be sacked, the new manager has then to make a fist out of what has been purchased before him.
Like myself you wish the support not to chant at times that will distract the players, as that is only fair (especially on the new guys).
The fact still remains that the weak link in this promotion push is Kean. Unless, of course he demonstrates that he has actually now climbed the learning curve to now being an astute manager that is tactically aware.

It's gonna look bad week in week out isn't it - there is simply no two ways about it. There's no way Steve Kean will be able to spin it. If he says the fans are staying away because of relegation then he will alienate those who are attending even more, because they personally know those fans staying away and they know it's because of Steve Kean. Everyone knows it. The whole town knows it.
What are our owners planning when they allow something so patently unpopular to our fans to continue? The really weird thing is that they are willing to spend the same money it would take to get rid of him on a new player.
Like I said earlier though, it's good to debate this now, but it makes no difference to what is going to happen. Those who are staying away have made up their minds, and those who are going to attend but still protest have made up their minds too. I'm only telling you the truth as it is
What will the viewing public think if they see continued protests against Steve Kean when the ground is so empty anyway? They'll realise that everyone, stay aways or attendees, they all want to see the back of our manager. But he's still there.
How is that ever good advertising for the Venkys?

If Mrs Desai does step down from the Rovers board then that leaves Kean really out there on his own - and unless he wins every game then the Rao brothers will have him out of Ewood double-quick.
Then the 15k plus can get back to 20k plus and we can start to get our club back maybe?

The figure of 5k from these new posters is closer to the truth I feel. I thought Lancs Pensioner's 7.5k would be low, but I genuinely think now that the club already know the scale of the problem, and it's extremely serious and they now realise that it's not likely to change unless Kean goes.
We'll wait and see of course, but if a pro Venkys poster is saying 5k, then that could be the best indicator yet. That figure probably tallies with what everyone has been saying in the real world as well.
We can only see what happens a month tomorrow though. 5k or 15k?

Irrespective of whether Kean is retained or not, money is being pocketed from these 'turnovers', both in and out.
It matters not to the people involved where this leads us, because if, as, and when Kean is ditched the new man will then want to bring in his choice of players. Which means more ins and outs, and yet more money pocketed by individuals.
Its all about money.

I applaud hs actions. Whilst I love my club to bits, it is the owners who will suffer in the event of any guilty verdict :
- BAD PR for Venkys
- FINANCIAL PENALTY for Venkys
- FA INVESTIGATION as not fit to own the club..
Similarly go get KEAN for every penny you can Sam .. He's a convicted DRUNK DRIVER .. Bare faced LIAR .. SHAMEFUL ACUSER of you & the BRFC fans .. :
- I hope he loses his FA badges
- I hope he loses his job
- I hope he loses his house

First and foremost the club would have been expected to have acted, but as we all know Kean can do no wrong, whether it is drink driving, antagonising supporters, or relegating the club.
Maybe this is Sams way of 'challenging' this 'shield' that Kean has somehow constructed.
Roll on I say.
