Blackburn Rovers new boy Gomes has World Cup dream
3:21pm Tuesday 10th July 2012 in News
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
NUNO Gomes believes his shock Blackburn Rovers move could hand him an international lifeline – as he bids for a dream World Cup finale.
The 36-year-old signed a two-year deal at Ewood Park last week and revealed he turned down several other offers, including one from Premier League Everton.
The former Benfica, Fiorentina and Braga striker has played in World Cups and European Championships for Portugal and hopes his English switch could earn him an international recall.
He insists helping Rovers back into the Premier League at the first attempt is the priority but believes that could also earn him a place in Portugal’s squad for the World Cup in 2014.
He said: “The talks began two weeks ago. It was quite fast. I had other offers, even from Everton from the Premier League, but everyone here made me feel at home. That was very important for me.
“I’m going to live in Manchester. It’s an hour trip and my family will be with me there. I hope also that Black-burn can help me, perhaps I could even be at the 2014 World Cup with Portugal.
“I had offers from Braga and also Benfica, but wanted to play in England. I had some talks with guys from the MLS and from Everton, but the guys from Rovers convinced me.
“They want me to help the team reach the Premier League. That’s the main goal, the Premier League. I think I can become an idol to the fans. At every club I’ve played, I had the fans’ support and hope I can get it there as well.
“I always loved English football. In England everyone looks at what the player does on the pitch. They don’t look at how old we are. I think I can score many goals, and who knows, after two years maybe I can renew thecontract.”

Nothing wrong with confidence in his own ability. Hopefully it will rub off on some of the younger players.
Lets forget the real deluded one and let the players who want to play for our club play.
Those who dont want to play for us, let them go and get in as much as possible to rebuild with players like this who want to achieve success and get us back to the premier league.

This applies to every player, so no disrespect at all to Nuno.
However, as the saying goes: 'Talk is cheap', actions is what its all about.
I sincerely hope he does well and wish him the best.
I note that time and time again the same old criticism coming out over the hesitancy of us 'stay aways' toward the man and his declaration of putting it all in for BRFC. And by the same token the criticism of some stay aways toward the readily acceptance of absolutely anything at all coming out of BRFC as a real sign of 'turning the corner' and things on the up.
Both are equally pointless, as we will all only really know when we are some 10 weeks or so into the season.

As for Nunu, I think his last statement gives his delusional state away...another 2 year contract for a 38 year old striker!! Brockhall is where they all belong.

Then why are people giving their money to an ever expanding gravy train.
They dont "Splash the cash", they simply take your cash, and I for one do not want to keep people like we have at Ewood in full and plenty.
If our club is going to be stripped bare by our current regime, it might as well happen now not some time later when we are in Division 2.
So thats why it is so important they are starved of money.
To them its never been about the football and that wont change with a few more optimistic statements and indeed one or two supportive comments on here.

I take issue with your phrasing. If fans have made a decision not to buy a ticket just as you have made a decision to buy one, why do you describe those who havent as 'crawling'? You make it sound as thought they have something to beg forgiveness about and they clearly havent. It is a grown up decision just as yours is. Did you crawl down to the ticket office and sleasily buy a ticket? Of course not. Stop being so petty about other people.

What I can assure you all is that Nuno Gomes is a very intelligent player and very reasonable and likeable person.
I don't know why he chose BR over Everton, but I can understand why he chose them over a staff position in Benfica: because he still wants to play. And contrary to my fellow Benfica fan, I still believe he can. And he will score, if he plays. He did last year in Braga, and I think he was probably the player with the best goals/minutes played ratio in our league. And, yes, he definitely was the player missing in our national squad in Euro 2012. We would've won it, had he been there.
I don't think he will make it to the national squad in 2014, but I'm sure you guys will love him if he gets the chance to do what he does best. I, for one, surely will be following his and the team's career. I owe him some of the best moments of my 45+ years as a football fan and I hope you guys will be playing in the Premier League next season. I don't know about the rest of staff, but Nuno "Gomes" Ribeiro surely deserves such an opportunity.

Well, I can understand the club is going through some major crisis — or at least, judging from the supporters comments, through a lot disbelief in its future prospects.
You just signed a trully great player.

No I have my own identity.
Whilst I seriously appreciate some of the comments on this forum, there are too many going over the same point, time and time again, such as "I will not set foot in Ewood until Kean goes, but will attend away matches"
If these people do attend away matches, will they support the team, or just spend time hurling abuse at Kean? At home matches, some supporters can be quiet, this is their choice, however, at away matches the great majority "sing their hearts out for the lads" This encourages the team.
If non season ticket holders, or those who do not have a track record of buying tickets for the 2012/13 season are allowed to purchase away tickets, this will nullify the potential good atmosphere.
Only my opinion your Honour !! (lol)

haters on here need to get a clue about whats really going on. Players arent saying anything bad about Kean because apart from one or two, Kean has a good relationship with all of them, trust me on this, my gf worked there last season.
The press, Flitcroft other managers all have nothing bad to say about Kean because clueless as a manager he might have been, its down to opinion, Kean bent over backwards giving encouragement to players and staff and is generally well liked. There might have been all sorts of dodgy going on in the boardroom but Kean didnt bring it to the team and shielded the players and people working there blame venkys for most of it.
and before any haters jump on the bandwagon, yeah I am new on here, but I am shocked to read some of the comments from so-called rovers supporters. I can only assume they are the same morons who chanted throughout each match win lose or draw.
Well here's a nugget for ya: Its commonly known behind the scenes that the Yak wanted out not just because he wanted top-flight football (proven by fact he didnt go to the EPL), he was sick and tired of all the negativity and didnt relish another season of the negative atmosphere created including from the fans.
Hes not the only one and who could blame them? its bad enough results not going your way, injuries, players not being played from decisions by absent owners, but who in their right mind would have wanted to put a Rovers shirt on and go out to fans chanting and boo-ing the manager?
Abuse me all you like, I'm a true blue and will be there rain or shine cheering on my team to turn it around and neither Venkys, Kean or so-so supporters can change that. Just hope the players take comfort that its only the away games they have to suffer.

That's what no-one can understand. That's why everyone thinks there is something seriously shady going on. There is no question in most fans' mind that there is something highly questionable going on at Rovers whilst Steve Kean is still there. The facts for that are self evident.
Only the owners can change that. The owners are deluded that it will change if we get some good results. It's past that point for most fans though, we have been shat on for too long. Football managers are sacked as easy as they are on the Apprentice, but ours keeps his job even when it means deliberately alienating huge swathes of out fans.
That's why there is the negativity, because none of this makes sense unless something suspicious is going on. Please stop blaming the fans therefore. They haven't created this crazy situation. They want to end this crazy situation. They know, like everyone, how this situation can be easily ended too. But our owners would much rather just continue to shat on their own fans instead.
And you expect us to cheer this?

Jack Straw is a man of honour and good intention. He has to follow up all allegations of wrong doing whether true, fabricated or embellished as could be the case with the BRAG report.
Jack lent his support to what appeared to be incriminating and damning evidence. Call it bandwagon jumping or whatever, its within his right to change his mind and lend his support if he thinks its right to do so.

Fully appreciate your frustrations, yes Kean should just go and there would be harmony again (bliss). Unfortunately, we as supporters have no say in the matter. Venkys have made a mess, we all know that. Over the past few weeks, things have changed a little, for the better, we will have to see, but at least there appears to be communication.
However, in view of the past, and maybe the future, conduct of business by Venkys, some supporters will try to pick fault with everything that comes out of the club.
Difficult, I know, but let's wait until the start of the season to see who has come and gone, and the frame of the squad of players. Protesting has gone on for months, we are only talking about weeks now, and if things are not better, then go for it!!

In a nutshell, from what I know, Kean talks a good talk to her highness and even they were being tight lipped about the decisions they made. Indian owners are like that I get told. Hes a monkey, but he no doubtedly is a clever one because he sucked up to organ grinder not the brothers. So whatever he said, she said, her brother said, it simply doesn't matter anymore. What matters now is that many, possibly most fans have crossed a point of no return now with Steve Kean - they see his presence as being proof positive of something completely rotten down at Ewood.
That's the first and foremost thing that needs to change to get the fans back on board therefore, and there is only one way to do that. Any plans which don't include sacking Kean are doomed to failure for the common fan. That's just being realistic of the modern world.
In the face of reason therefore, any plans which don't include sacking Kean will be seen as incompetence from the owners from most fans too. A blind man can see the most sensible option is sacking Kean. So why aren't the owners doing that? The owners will be rightly seen as stupid by fans because they are making stupid decisions. Either way it doesn't fill fans with confidence.

Looks like Chorley FC is now out of bounds in view of Garry Flitcroft's comments, but then again, do other clubs want to put up with moaning fans.
It's purely a diversionary tactic, to hoodwink his puppeteers in India, into thinking he still has the support of the fans. Even some fans are being taken in, and are willing to give this evil regime a second chance.
What have they done to deserve any support at all? NOTHING! They have brought nothing but shame and humiliation to this once proud club. They have destroyed EVERYTHING that Jack Walker built. They are not here to develop the club, and to preserve the legacy of Jack Walker, like they PROMISED to do. They LIED, and have continued to do so ever since.
Don't be fooled by their ongoing propaganda. Their reasons for being here are less than honourable. They have absolutely NO INTENTIONS of fulfilling the PROMISES they made, when they bought the club. There is not ONE aspect of the club that has been improved. I can only see FAILURE; at EVERY LEVEL. I really can't understand why anyone can still keep giving money to these scoundrels.

Listen Lads, lets not fall out about negatives, we all love BRFC but we have difficult years ahead, yes we have a very poor manager and horrendous owner. It is easy to carry on and support our players and mangers. We all want to go next season but we have to make a sacrifice,, if we support this lot we will definatly get relegated again-it is a 100% certantanty. so dont go next season, hopefully it may get them all out.

Negatives are fine, where warranted, and everybody is entitled to their own opinion. All is not rosy at Ewood, but having to trawl through all the repetative dross about not buying a season ticket, hate this person and that, only going to away games etc is boring.

Get Real
haters on here need to get a clue about whats really going on.

This is quite right, because it has nothing to do with them and would surely harm their concentration onfield.
I would hope that any who were planning to can readily respect his concerns and wishes.
Any that ignore this and continue will certainly cause a hell of a lot of harm again to our image.

It is only natural for some of us to feel a little more positive given the apparent installation of a management structure and signings of new players.
Personally, I remain hugely sceptical of the new officers suitability, considering their dubious CVs - or simply a lack of one - and how some of them got their jobs in the first place.
As for the players; it is only natural players will leave when a club is relegated and is little or nothing to do with the manager. Any player (or manager) would want to leave a club if a better opportunity came along, irrespective of the club being in Europe or going down (or has already gone) - Bellamy, Santa Cruz, Jones, Bentley and Mark Hughes spring to mind.
Samba was one of the few who left on principle, partly at least. He had been promised the world by the owners, probably through Kean, and they did not deliver.
It has of course been convenient for all the criticism to be heaped on the manager - as useless as he is. They have been able to keep their heads down and not accept any responsibilty.
Players are temporary employees only - Robbie Savage said last season they don't really care who is in charge as long as they are getting a game (he was talking about Spurs and 'arry possibly taking the England job).
For all the players signed I am concerned at the probable net deficit come the end of the summer. We look like being desperately short, both positionally (no defenders signed and several wanting away) and, quite simply, numerically.
As for Jack Straw and Flits; you can't deny, Kean showed character staying in the job amidst all the flak he was taking, although I would question him being "dignified" as some claimed. The dignity bar is set pretty low in the management profession. They spend most of the time abusing just about everybody, especially match officials, and behaving like spoiled brats. So Kean didn't turn around and start giving it back - does that make him dignified? What was their opinion of the manner in which he got the job (Sam said he had been stabbed in the back, you may recall) or his behaviour in court or what he said about his predecessor? These are far greater indications of the levels of dignity. Moyes', Pullis@ et al; their silence was deafening.
And Flits? Well he isn't going to come out and say he is useless and should be sacked is he? It was probably in response to a throw away question which doesn't concern him anyway.
Technically, those going down to Ewood are supporters of the team whilst those who don't aren't. I won't be as I am a supporter of the club and have been beaten into submission by the way it has been dismantled by the incompetence of its owners.
I do not feel an affinity to the club any more, but go easy on those who express an opinion, one way or t'other.
