Blackburn Rovers aiming for Portuguese treble

PORTUGUESE star Nuno Gomes completed his move to Blackburn Rovers last night – with Steve Kean looking to make it an Iberian treble later this week.

Former Benfica and Portugal ace Gomes put pen to paper on a two-year-deal after turning down lucrative offers to move to America or the Middle East.

His compatriot and Portimonese’s 19-year-old winger Fabio Nunes will sign for Rovers on Thursday for a nominal fee, after completing his medical yesterday.

Boss Steve Kean remains hopeful he can make it a Portuguese hat-trick before the weekend with 23-year-old Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva keen on coming to Ewood.

The former Portugal under 21 skipper is understood to be in negotiations with Lisbon about the terms of his release but Rovers are hopeful it can be sorted imminently.

Silva has had interest from Porto and Marseilles but it is understood Blackburn Rovers are his preferred destination – as long as he can finalise matters with his current employers.

Rovers have already signed Danny Murphy and Leon Best this summer and remain on the look out for another striker ahead of the Championship campaign.

The Lancashire Telegraph understands that reports linking Cardiff City defender Anthony Gerrard to Ewood are wide of the mark.

Meanwhile new boy Best has pledged to repay Steve Kean’s faith in him with goals after signing from Newcastle for in the region of £3million earlier this week.

He told Roversplayer: “With that number nine shirt, I will be looking to score some goals.

“I said to my agent this is the third club I have been at that Shearer was at. A little bit of pressure.

“I will set myself targets. I will give 110 per cent and if I am not scoring I will try and help others to. I am delighted by the move, it is a new start to my career and hopefully we are going straight back up.

“I have been with Steve Kean before and I know what he is about. He showed me a lot of loyalty and I am showing some back.

“I have never really had a good solid run in any team. Either injuries have hit me or good strikers have come in, or the manager has not given me a chance.

“I have spoken with Steve and I feel he is going to stand by me and give me a chance. He has given me the number nine shirt and that means a lot, I just need to get my head down and look forward to playing a lot of games.

“We have a good manager, a good structure, we have kept a lot of the good players and now it is a case of going back up and signing a few more.”
