Gomes set for Blackburn Rovers medical today

FORMER Portugal international Nuno Gomes is expected to sign for Blackburn Rovers within the next 48 hours.

The former Benfica striker agreed personal terms on a two year deal over the weekend, as exclusively revealed by the Lancashire Telegraph, and will arive at Brockhall this morning for a medical.

Gomes, who turns 36 this week, has opted to move to Ewood on a free transfer rather than taking up offers to move to America or the middle east.

"Has opted to move to Ewood on a free transfer rather than taking up offers to move to America or the middle east" - must be in high demand. Were any other English clubs interested. Would have been an amazing signing 15 years ago. No idea what he is like now!

Would all this "money" or wages money not be better spent on a competent football manager?

Bom dia. I hope Kean knows what he is doing. (That should get a response) Sadly as they get older, many players get slower (e.g. Michel Salgado), injury prone (e.g. Ryan Nelsen), lose enthusiasm (e.g. ..............) If we sign Mr Gomes, let's hope this does not apply. Obrigado e adeus.

I really am disappointed to see people overly excited about this signing, Murphy and Best. Mediocrity for our now very mediocre club.
We are losing all our quality, by mid August our backbone will have gone, to be replaced by Uncle Festers cronies and ill informed ageing journeymen looking for their pension.
Do not be fooled, they are not investing only using a proportion of current and future sales.
As as we all keep saying - what is the point with the Vile One in charge? Some people are actually thinking we could succeed. Have you not been watching for the last 18 months?! Get a grip. Continue the boycott.

36 years old and gets a good two year contract, God has he got the same agent as Myles Anderson!

This lad may be ok whilst the suns shining in August to October, I think he will struggle physically and mentally in the rain sleet and snow from November till April though.

Good luck to him getting one last big pay day, it's not coming from any money made from my pocket, I will check him out at away games.

Genuinely excited about Gomes joining rovers at this stage and really surprised by the negativity on here for his age recently. Plenty of life left in the not so old dog, and those who keep saying the championship is much more demanding, is it really more demanding than where he is coming from or just more than the Premiership?

Personally, injury arguments accepted, providing he doesn't get injured he will be one of the shining lights at Ewood this season. His ambition, style of play technical ability speak for themselves.

the "last pay day" is an easy to throw at insult. You will actually find the likes of Murphy and Gomes are quite wealthy to begin with and money, whilst not the last motivator, certainly won't be a priority to them.

The key words are "2 year contract" and "playing" for these players. As long as we are doing the medicals and fitness tests to ensure they are up to the job - and Kean actually lets them play than sit on the bench - We shouldnt be too quick to write them off as "last pay day" seekers.

Cant agree with your description or view of what is mediocre Dan....

Murphy is certainly not mediocre - he is a proven and experienced prem midfielder and Fulham wanted to keep him in the prem.

Best took a while to get going at Newcastle when he went there but actually scored some cracking goals once he got his chance and was really taken to heart by the Geordies who know and appreciate their center forwards. Best will wear the No 9 shirt at Rovers and I am sure he will do it and us proud.

They would both have been decent signings had we still been in the prem - so not sure where you are coming from on this?

Gomes looks to be a very good signing too - he will bring some top level European and international experience to the club which to be fair is really needed now.

We are 4-1 (fifth favourites) for promotion now and you can begin to see why when you see the team taking shape.

I know we will still lose some players like Hoilett (but he has been leaving for 12 months or more now in his own mind) but good luck to Junior wherever he goes. Robinson wont be that big a loss really (good bloke but worst saves to shots record in the prem) and we will probably also lose Olsson (good player but never really progressed as his performances for Sweden showed at the Euros) and maybe N'Zonzi. NZonzi would have been good playing alongside Murphy as he could give the young lad the confidence he so badly needs.

Just need a certain person to leave (now) and we could all be set to enjoy a decent season.

I agree with you with this signing, last seasons failures were a mixture of young inexperienced players and poor managerial skills taking on the experience of Premier league clubs. The situation is now different,we are in the Championship, maybe more physical, but less technical. The young players would have learned much from last season, and I believe they deserve credit for their efforts.I also believe they can learn a lot from the experience of Gomes and Murphy. So I don't feel the need to criticise these players regardless of age.The main problem will be Kean,he has lost all of his trust from the fans, his managerial and people skills have been shown to be appalling and naive.I am hoping that with the small financial backing he is getting from the owners, that his expectation levels from them has gone up and they now base their decisions on results. When he does finally go,which hopefully wont be long,we can get back to singing,"going down to Ewood to see the Blackburn aces". And get back to the Premier League.

Ah well! Maybe the season after.

For those who feel that Venkys have had a change of heart, Leon Best is the only player costing a transfer fee. Once Yak, Hoilett, Nzonzi, Olsen, Robbo etc leave, they will make a net transfer profit yet again. And yes we are paying these new players decent wages, but again once the above players leave coupled with the huge wage savings following the departure of Samba, Nelsen, Roberts, Salgado, Emerton etc. I'd be amazed if Venkys weren't quids in again. Don't forget they still won't spend the money most needed, to pay off that clown of a manager.

you could just go? contentious i know, but if you really do want to support the team, just go to the games. from what some seem to think, the evidence agains the 'fit and proper' criteria seems to be nailed on, so the whole lot will be in jail at some point and we will have new ownership.

Get a grip. Continue the boycott.[/p]
Just need a certain person to leave (now) and we could all be set to enjoy a decent season.[/p]
Morning Frenchie. What's this about Hoilett leaving? He's signing a new contract in the next 24 hours isn't he? Billypieman

A cracking player, Silva ?? - how do you know ?? - how many times have you seen him play ?? (last season he played in Israel and the lower reaches of the Portugese league).
.
I confess I havent seen him (like 99.9% of people on here) but I'm not very excited about either of these portuguese players.
.
If you look at Silva's stats they are less than impressive - he obviously hasnt made the grade at Sporting Lisbon (33 appearances, 0 goals in 5 seasons ??) and the only clubs to really show an interest in him was Macabi Haiffa and some crappy small club in Portugal - hardly a signing to get the pulse racing !!
.
Nuno Gomes - very good player in his day but is 36 !!, is coming to play in a 46 game, physical, kick and rush league in a cold wet climate.
.
Non of which he'll have experienced before and non of which I think will suit him - also when you factor in that non of the 5 or 6 big teams in Portugal seem really interested in signing him, says it all. Way past his best (and they all know it) looking for one last decent payday - and he's found it at Ewood.
.
Murphy and Best - potentially very good signings, they know what to expect, both football and living/climate wise and can fit straight into the team - the 2 Portugueses lads - ?? (bear in mind that Vukevic, unlike Silva was a regular 1st teamer at Sporting Lisbon and has hardly lit Ewood up since his arrival).
.
I think these 2 Portuguese signings are simply because they can be made quickly (no one else really wants them) and it shows "real intent" and is aimed at getting the easily impressed and the guilible to renew their season tickets before the scale of the player exodus out of Ewood becomes obvious (Hoilett, Yak, Robinson, Olsson, Formica, Nzonzi, Dann, Rochina, Vukevic) with possibly Givet and Hanley also possibly departing - if they were to get better offers.

Here is the big problem, I have renewed. Never in doubt, but what happens when the first goal goes in for Hull at Ewood. I can already imagine the reaction and this is why the manager must be replaced before the season starts. The damage was done so long ago, there is no fresh start.

I first uttered the words "Kean Out" at Cardiff away, while our team was played off the park. The feeling will not leave me until he is removed. Judging from the comments on every story, its not just me that feels this way. Either the club wake up or we face another season of anger, protests and disappointing results on the field.

- Danny Murphy - A 35 year old who, despite what he says, is clearly there for the money and because Wovers are the only team that would give an ageing midfielder a 2 year deal. Too old for that role in this division, and I doubt he'll be too motivated.

- Leon Best - An average striker at best, just 29 goals in the last 134 appearances, mostly at this level. Newcastle will be extremely happy with 3 million for a player they would probably have considered releasing anyway.

- Nuno Gomes - A 36 year old last seen winding down his career at S..C Braga

Add to all this the fact that Steve Kean is still in charge and I think it's safe to say that there's nothing to worry about here.

Again, I question, if you've decided to give up attending the games because of Kean, who obviously isnt going anywhere on his own volition and even less likely to be sacked by Venkys if supporters dont attend but results are going our way, what are you doing constantly announcing to the world on LT about your intentions not to attend and your hatred for Kean??

I know a few deluded believe anyone of any clout actually reads LT's comments, but come on.. There are only two ways Kean will go. By force by sacking by Venky's if results are not going our way (doubtful), or if any wrong doings are proven, which could be a long long time in coming if the legal system in this country is anything to go by.

Either way, Kean is here for the medium term at least, so can we give it a rest with the Kean vitriol, because tbh, its getting boring. We come on here to read about latest Rovers signings and happenings, not endless rants about what has gone on which was frankly depressing enough at the time, and isnt made any better when its constantly repeated like a stuck record on here. No, we arent swayed by the new signings, but neither do we want to be negative nancy's about anything that happens at Rovers which doesnt involve Baldy's sacking - which would be like Christmas to any true blues ears.

whilst i have no idea whether these portugeezers will be any good in division 2 (let's not con ourselves with the word championship...kean probably told desai that the championship is better than the premiership and we got promoted last season and she had been looking at the league upside-down) they will only be worth their salt if our beloved leader actually plays them.
.
formica (25 starts) petrovic (10), vukevic (4), ribeiro (0), goodwillie (4), rochina (9), modeste (3) - these were lord haw haw players and like a vintage corgi toy collector - he preferred to keep them in the box....why would next season be any different?
.
to me (who admittedly knows little) division 2 is a tough environment to blood any veterans that have never played in england or rookie overseas players....best and murphy would seem like safer bets.
.
i have to believe that if goodwillie gets games and a bit of service that he may prove useful in a lower league as d2 is closer to SPL than our premiership. equally, i reckon that pedersen may have a good season in a lower league (dependent on the support he gets in midfield). think it will be a season too far for dunn - but that was a couple of seasons ago already....he huffs and puffs more than the big bad wolf (or maybe i "need to get real" eh dunny?)
.
hanley should look like a quality player in this league and i think lowe will shine. slew should be good enough in this league. hopefully some of the lads that did so well in the youth team will get a chance - but this league is a tough league for a debut real young 'uns.
.
clearly robinson, givet and n'zonzi hate kean as much as the supporters so can only see them staying if nobody comes in for them...dann will want away like he did at brum season before last and can't see olsson staying - he will probably go to a lower half prem team or one of the promoted sides.
.
but as others say all of our predictions are prblematic as the one immovable force seems to be our beloved leader - he is as honest as a city banker and as experienced as that junior minister that paxo mauled last week.
.
would anybody buy a second hand car from our stevie??

Here is the big problem, I have renewed. Never in doubt, but what happens when the first goal goes in for Hull at Ewood. I can already imagine the reaction and this is why the manager must be replaced before the season starts. The damage was done so long ago, there is no fresh start. I first uttered the words "Kean Out" at Cardiff away, while our team was played off the park. The feeling will not leave me until he is removed. Judging from the comments on every story, its not just me that feels this way. Either the club wake up or we face another season of anger, protests and disappointing results on the field.
You will hear Kean out chants at Pre season Friendlies, with some luck at Brockhall on Thursday when the players return..

Lets show shebby and kean that we have not forgot and will not forgive.

You are probably correct but the 100s of comments to each story that mention Steve Kean rather than the "exciting" new signings only highlight the strength of feeling in the area.

Yes no one is listening to Rovers fans, the LT are unlikely to follow up the "Kean Must Go" editorial. Steve Kean will probably stay as manager while we fall to new depths. The record will remain stuck until the man is removed. Expecting people to stay silent is an impossible task, something that Venky's and Kean are hoping for.

Hi Hugo
First of all I am not on a high horse I love my club, a couple if cheap signings and you have not seen who is about to leave and you think everything in the garden is rosy, have you forgotten what's happened to OUR club over the last eighteen months, relegation, lies, lies and more lies, you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that but don't try and get me back there whilst the shower are running the show, I have said previously this time of year should be great for all us fans but with the corruption about to be unfolded and Kean still manager, no thanks I will stay away a bit longer, may see you at away matches though, good luck, I hope it turns out well for both of us and we get a good manager who will be open and HONEST with us.

Hi JC,

the climate wont be a problem for Gomes as Braga is in the north west of Portugal and they get quite wet and windy winters and around 9.5C temps. A bit like Blackburn.

As for none of the top five 'big' teams in Portugal wanting him well Nuno Gomes has actually played for three of them already so no shock that he wants to try elsewhere.

As for the 'ewood exodus' well that is well documented and everyone knows pretty much who has gone and who will be going...but players come and go at every club so its not exactly sensational news is it? Plus some of the players who are going spent most of the season on the bench - like Formica, Rochina and Vukevic.
Hoilett's heart has not been in it for some time and well as much as I love the Yak I am not sure he could repeat last seasons heroics again. BTW Hanley will stay for sure and will be a big player for us this season.

It is the team for next season that is most important now. And it is starting to look OK so you can see why the bookies have us as at 4-1 and fifth favourites for promotion.

We struggled for over two years now and it would be oh so good to see the team to start winning matches and doing well again.

The disgraceful off the field happenings of the last 18 months or so and the disgraceful arrogance of a certain bloke at Ewood prevents most of us getting the normal excitement at the coming seasons prospects.

But if it was not for all the off-field stuff (that hopefully BRSIT etc will bring out into the open) then most fans would be very pleased at these signings.

I get told this is ALL Shebby, which means yes, it is excellent news as far as the fans are concerned because it means Shebby has it in him to sack Kean if given reason to so this season, "Clean slate" and all.

Shebby, you have in your powers to become an instant Ewood legend, don't be falling on your own sword to save him when the time comes.

And where has all this money come from by the way?

Hello French Rover, I normally appreciate your considered opinions on this messageboard, but reall? Gomes isn't a 36 year has-been? Of course he is, and Championship defenders will kick lumps out of him, he will manage 15 matches a season at best. And talking of Best I have seen him play a few times including at Coventry. He is mediocre. His goal ratio is almost as bad as Roberts. He is a Championship player not someone who will take it by storm. And as for Murphy , well I hope I am proved wrong but let's see shall we. Your summation of the players we shall lose is way off track - Olsson and Nzonzi are class, how can anyone thrive under Fester's stewardship. When motivated Hoillet is excellent as is Robinson who is also an established figure.
The squad is taking shape indeed. For bottom half Championship or worse.

Oh and have to say that there will be no bottom half finish for us. The bookies are not often wrong (they had us to go down last season!) and they now have as fifth fav's to go back up.

Hi JC,

the climate wont be a problem for Gomes as Braga is in the north west of Portugal and they get quite wet and windy winters and around 9.5C temps.

Fifth favourites for promotion? Only three go up, so we miss out!
come on Darener you obviously didn't go to Darwen Tech - it is two up automatic and four in the play-offs so as we are fifth favorites that would (using your logic) put us at least into the play-offs....

(last season he played in Israel and the lower reaches of the Portugese league). . I confess I havent seen him (like 99.9% of people on here) but I'm not very excited about either of these portuguese players. . If you look at Silva's stats they are less than impressive - he obviously hasnt made the grade at Sporting Lisbon (33 appearances, 0 goals in 5 seasons ??) and the only clubs to really show an interest in him was Macabi Haiffa and some crappy small club in Portugal - hardly a signing to get the pulse racing !! .

Ok Dan guess we have to agree to differ on this one....Gomes is only a 35 has-been btw (until thursday)!

Oh and have to say that there will be no bottom half finish for us. The bookies are not often wrong (they had us to go down last season!) and they now have as fifth fav's to go back up.
Hmm - the bookies favourites to go up last season in the Championship were not Reading and Southampton, and the season before it certainly wasn't Norwich and Swansea?

I would say when it comes to the Championship the bookies get it wrong pretty much every season.

Leon "1 in 4" Best (take out his goals scored for Yeovil and Bournemouth in the 3rd Div and his record is even worse!) and Nuno Gomes - released by Benfica, released by Braga and hasn't played a serious international match since 2008 (unsurprisingly dropped from the international squad because he wasn't getting enough game time at his club. The reason some people are being negative about Rovers signings is simple. Venky's are still selling at top prices and buying in the bargain basement. And never for one moment forget that until Kean took over we had a decent Premiership side. That was thown away for short term gain.
The other reason for the gloom continuing is again simple. How on earth can we trust Kean after all the rubbish he has uttered and his complete inability to motivate a team. He is a dreadful manager - we cannot get away from that no matter what. If his past record is anyhing to go by he will probably never play half of the players he signs anyway. Look at Goodwillie, he could not get a full game last year and it looks like he will be the same this time as well. Also Kean should realise that it is the back that is weak and was for most of last season.

What 12 goals in the last three seasons!!! The last time he reached double figures was in 2005 though to be fair he did score 24 goals in 1998.
Was meaning the 222 in 583 games, statistics and all that. Oh and 29 in 79 for Portugal.
I'm sorry I didn't realise you were going back to......the last century!!!
.
Hes coming to Rovers aged 36 not 26 and I have just looked at his contribution over the last 4 years.
.
I will concede that, as a teenager and even into his twenties, he was a cracking player and could have well gone to one of the better premiership clubs. Its a pity you wil have to see him at the end of his career.

What the heck do darreners have to smile about! We're wet, cold, and have to put up with living next to Blackburn. And now can't even take our pleasures at the Rovers.

PS Hugo look at your score and how many people agree with you, it's only a guide line but take a look!!
P.P.S.lans pensioner hugo is a dingle!
Thanks for the update!!! Here's me thinking he was a true blue.

It's alright you saying were going to lose all these players but as we approach pre season training there's not been a great deal of interest in our better players, and these better players are hardly going to be highly sought after after some not so clever performances last season,

Also if rovers are top after 10 games will you all come back? you really could hurt yourself more than what you think you'll be hurting the venkys pocket

Let's face it the fact we're still managing to attract and sign players has to be a bonus, I was dreading this summer. Best will score in this League and has the right frame and bulk to take the knocks, Murphy maybe older, but still has high work rate and will split midfields and defences in half. Gomes, let's hope he can use his experience, not only to bring on Best but Goodwillie and Rochina, time will tell.

An extract about Silva if your interested!

Talented midfielder has been watched by Everton, West Ham and Sunderland over recent months. Blackburn were also in for him in January but thought their chance had gone with relegation. However, talks have resumed and there is a strong chance of him finalising terms this week for a bargain fee of around £1million. Silva is an all-rounder with the ability to go box-to-box and score goals. He impressed on loan at Academica last season and even helped them to win the Portuguese Cup against his club Sporting but his celebrations did not sit well with the club’s owners. Could prove a vital signing alongside Danny Murphy in midfield.

Dingles have gone very quiet though.
Only because we have so many things to laugh about we don't know where to start! . He hasnt played more than 20 games a season since 2008/9. . Having said all that Danny Murphy could be your Graham Alexander! . I can't see anyone chanting "Stevie Keans Blue and White Army" so perhaps just "Dads Army" will do.
Well of course.. he's no George Porter from the heady heights of the Orient.. :p
What an up and coming 20 year old who will hopefully improve and we will sell for a profit or a 36 year old released on a free by his last two clubs who will take a conservative £1,000,000 in wages before leaving for nothing.
.
Oh dear you lot are in for a rude awakening when the reality of Championship football kicks in!!!

Real intent will be if Robbo, Givet, Ollson and Nzonzi stay...my bet is 0 out of 4

Ollson=when he can be arsed
Nzonz=spit ya dummy out. Sh1te

Murphy could be a good signing if he stays fit but young portugese players and their grandads are not worth the gamble.

Hi JC,

the climate wont be a problem for Gomes as Braga is in the north west of Portugal and they get quite wet and windy winters and around 9.5C temps.

I think Best and Murphy are good signings and we will have a reasonable/good championship side at the start of the season (although you've gotta factor in we've the worst manager in the division - and thats a HUGE downer ) - I disagree with you about Gomes - he played for the big sides in Portugal in the past but that is history - he's way past his sell by date now and (in my opinion) will be a high wage flop who, no doubt will keep getting picked ahead of Goodwillie who could look a good player at this level, if he gets the chance.
.
As for Formica, Rochina and Vukevic - they are all class players (at this level) but unfortunately our great manager has isolated them all to the extent that I'm sure all 3 would walk over hot coals to leave the club.

Also, I don't know how you can write off Vukevic but say Gomes is a great signing.
.
Vukevic hasnt made it at Rovers yet he was a big player at Sporting Lisbon and is almost 10 years younger than Gomes, someone who I think has played very very little football over the last few years but is expected to play in a 46 game a season league ??

As for Rovers being 4th or 5th favs for promotion -don't put your mortgage on us - Leicester were joint favs last season and finished mid table. Also, we still have the Kean factor and there will be (in my opinion) alot of Kean out chanting, especially in the away games and quite possibly in the pre-seasons.

Who wrote that about Silva ? - His agent ?
.
A talent for scoring goals ? - He scored 0 in 33 appearances for Sporting.
.
As for being in demand - funny that it dosent actually mention the teams that did sign him - Macabi Haiffa and Academia.
.
He sounds like another Sergio Peters to me - looked great at 14-178 but once he's reached the seniors his carrer has gone backwards - 33 appearances for Sporting in the last 5 years ? - thats hardly the next Nani, is it !

Why waste our breath anymore shouting Kean out? The problem s that the club are buying into some aged quality and handing out large contracts so our team squad looks more than capable on paper of achieving success but we all know it wont because its not being managed by a proper football manager.
I personally prefer a young side of premiership loanees so we can afford to maintain the contractual obligaions if we fail and that will definately happen with Kean in charge.
Mrs Desai may start to realise that she needs to take action if we are bottom of the league after 5 games so heres hoping we lose all the opening games and start a winning run when we get a proper boss in charge.

at 4-1 no way am I backing Rovers at those odds JC (not with the mortgage money anyway) - but that could all change if other things can change, notably getting shut of the Kean factor that (like you say) cannot be ignored - though we all wish it could be.

It has never been as difficult to support our team as it is now...in normal times relegation might have lost us some fans, a bad manager might have cost us some more, but this goes way beyond all that and it needs sorting quick now, somehow. We have to get our club back so we can support it properly once again.

Till then I keep trying to pretend that the odious one is not present and that my football world (Rovers) is normal but I keep getting dragged back to reality every time he opens his mouth to speak. Only because we have so many things to laugh about we don't know where to start! . He hasnt played more than 20 games a season since 2008/9. . Having said all that Danny Murphy could be your Graham Alexander! . I can't see anyone chanting "Stevie Keans Blue and White Army" so perhaps just "Dads Army" will do.
Did you leave out Gomes' goal scoring record for effect?
I'm not saying he will do well,it's just the manipulation of the figures i was getting at.
You seem to be looking back far enough for your Best ammunition.

Hi Hugo First of all I am not on a high horse I love my club, a couple if cheap signings and you have not seen who is about to leave and you think everything in the garden is rosy, have you forgotten what's happened to OUR club over the last eighteen months, relegation, lies, lies and more lies, you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that but don't try and get me back there whilst the shower are running the show, I have said previously this time of year should be great for all us fans but with the corruption about to be unfolded and Kean still manager, no thanks I will stay away a bit longer, may see you at away matches though, good luck, I hope it turns out well for both of us and we get a good manager who will be open and HONEST with us.
PS Hugo look at your score and how many people agree with you, it's only a guide line but take a look!!
P.P.S.lans pensioner hugo is a dingle!
I'm no more a dingle than you.
Just 'cause you don't agree with me no need to revert to name-calling.

Dingles have gone very quiet though.
Only because we have so many things to laugh about we don't know where to start! .
I'm not saying he will do well,it's just the manipulation of the figures i was getting at. You seem to be looking back far enough for your Best ammunition.
Newcastle - 46 games 10 goals
Coventry - 104 games 23 goals
.
Thats the last five years 150 games 33 goals, not quite 1 in 4. I haven't bothered to include his teenage years in division 3!!
.
Its not manipulation, just comparing the last 5 years!!

Because we have made a couple of signings and optmism is starting to creep In,nothing wrong with that but we are still stuck with kean and as we know it's a hell of a job too get out of any division because you are only as good as the division your in,if we had some new dynamic manager coming in who knew what he was doing ie a Gordon Lee,Jim Smith,Howard Kendal type who were up for the task ahead and knew what was required I would be more confident, even Don Mackey did a decent job for us but with this clown I'm not happy at all,but I'm afraid time wil tell one way or the other.

A fool and his money!
I envisage the bad news will continue after the ST deadline date.

Do you work for Venky's PR team?

I suspect he does. There appears to be several 'plants' on here at the moment. All with the same agenda; to cause division between fans. A classic Kean tactic.
