Rovers close in on two - with more new faces to follow

LEON Best and Fabio Nunes are expected to undergo medicals at Brockhall today as Blackburn Rovers look to make as many as four signings before Thursday’s start of pre-season training.

Newcastle United striker Best and Portuguese youth international Nunes are understood to have agreed personal terms, with Rovers expecting to seal their moves once the formalities have been completed.

Rovers are believed to have also agreed personal terms with former Portugal striker Nuno Gomes during talks over the weekend – with the player due back in England for a medical in midweek.

The club is also understood to be hopeful of securing the signature of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva, with the player keen on a switch to Ewood Park.

Agreement has yet to be reached with his employers but, despite interest from Porto and Marseille, Rovers are confident the £3million-rated midfielder will be at Ewood before the end of the week.

Former Southampton and Coventry City striker Best, 25, is set to complete his £3million move imminently after being persuaded to drop into the Championship, despite interest from Southampton and Norwich.

His arrival would go some way to replacing last season’s top scorer Yakubu, who quit for China last week, although Rovers know further fire power is still needed.

Portimonese’s 19-year-old left winger Nunes will join Rovers for a nominal fee, having spent last season on loan at Parma.

He was set to join Bulgarian outfit ZSKA Sofia earlier this summer but the move broke down allowing Rovers to step in.

Nunes should be joined at Ewood by his fellow countryman Nuno Gomes later this week after agreement was reached between the club and the player during talks on Saturday night.

The former Benfica and Fiorentina striker turns 36 later this week but Rovers believe his capture on a free transfer will add some more necessary experience to the squad.

Gomes’ goals fired Portugal to third place in the 2000 European Championships and the runners up spot in the same competition four years later.

He spent last season playing for Braga, of Portugal, and Rovers believe the wealth of experience he brings will prove beneficial to the young players in the squad.

Talks are ongoing between Rovers and Sporting Lisbon over the future of 23-year-old midfielder Silva but, with the player not wanted by the Portuguese outfit, he is understood to be close to a move to East Lancashire.

Rovers’ efforts to bring Newcastle United midfielder Dan Gosling to Ewood Park on a season-long loan are understand to have been frustrated, with the player wanting to remain at the Premier League outfit.

Even after the arrival of Best and Gomes, Rovers will bid to boost their fire power options with the addition of one more striker.

Junior Hoilett’s Rovers contract expired yesterday and, despite efforts from the club to sign him up again, the winger is expected to leave, with interest from Germany and the Premier League.

Left back Martin Olsson has reiterated his desire to quit the club, while Paul Robinson is still believed to be a target for Turkish outfit Besiktas.

Meanwhile, last season’s youth team skipper Ryan Edwards is expected to join Rochdale on loan.

Spot on edmy, will do nothing with Kean in charge. My next visit to Ewood will be to the game following Kean's sacking.

Adrien Silva is a very good player and should be an excellent signing if we can pull it off.

I can't see Nuno Gomes bringing much to the table apart from his 'experience' as it is a long time since he starred on the pitch.

Whoever comes in has to hit the ground running.

I hope that it has been spelled out to Kean that only points on the board are the means by which he can keep his job. Anything less than 14 out of the first 18 points and he must be sacked and a successor installed without delay. Talks should be taking place now to have a list of potential replacements in place.

The fans don't want Kean there but there he is and we will be starting the season with him as manager. I truly hope that the team gets the points that keep him there even accepting that he will never be respected by the fans.

It's all about results. It always has been which is why the fans can't understand and accept that Kean was not sacked last season.

It is nice to see Rovers active in the transfer market - but you still have to question Kean and his abilities in this area after the second rate signings of last season. In any event no matter who he signs he (KEAN) will still not be accepted by the fans at Ewood after the lies and contempt for the supporters - his standing in terms of professionalism/hone
sty is 'nil' and will continue to be so.
If he thinks a few signings and verb from Mr Singh will help his standing in respect of what the fans think of him then he is well off the mark.

Under normal circumstances this time of year is really exciting, but this influx of average championship overaged players has me worried,

Who is going out of the door, Olson has reiterated his desire to move and Robinson looks to be of to Turkey. We know Nzonzi does not like Kean and Rochina and Formica want out and they are being replaced by two 35 and 36 year olds and a reserve team forward who did not get into double figures last year, but at least we have Myles Anderson!!!! anyone seen him yet, he is on the payroll so he must be somewhere!

Lets face it Keans buys in the market last year left a lot to be desired, most of HIS signings where on the bench and a couple never even got that far which leaves me to say sorry no change for me.

No to season tickets or merchandise until this weak manager is dismissed.

Andy, you have been selling the fans the "fact" that there is a "budget in place" this week on Twitter. Yet, when the announcements are made, what do we find?

Murphy, 35 yrs old, FREE
Gomes, 36 years old, FREE
Gosling, possible 1 year loan (FREE)
Nunes, Nominal Fee (NEARLY FREE)
Adrien Silva, Rated £3M not yet signed
Leon Best, Possibly signed £3M

So, the Venkys have possibly spent £3M of the £12M Chris Samba money? That is the budget you are up-selling to the fans?

You may argue, that wages will have to be paid to these new players, but how many decent players were forced out because they needed wages last year? More are going this summer, and I suspect the transfer fees coming in will amount to well over the £3M budget we have seen so far. I believe they already have £1M from the Yakubu transfer.

Come on Andy. You are not supposed to be Paul Agnew you know!

Unfortunately that just doesn't hold for most Rovers fans. They have passed the point of no return already with Kean; 14 points from a possible 18, 18 points from 18, 48 points from 48, none of it matters, the time for setting targets for Kean has gone.

Why don't the Venkys understand this completely basic situation?

It's very very strange. Why are the Venkys willing to spend all this money only when it is in a flailing attempt to save Steve Kean? Sacking Steve Kean would turn the fans around quicker than if we signed Iniesta, but they just don't want to sack him under any circumstances, even though it makes sense from every perspective.

Why is Steve Kean so important to save? It doesn't make any sense without adding something untoward into the equation.

I'd like Rochina to be given a chance this season and he should be given a free role to cause havoc in the opposition defence. Just get him to practice with his right foot and learn a bit of tackling back...not too difficult...because the boy's got rare talent

If Andy Cryer's articles fail to establish a fair and proper response to the current situation at the club - as in this case - then I will comment.

I hope that by commenting, Mr Cryer might adjust his articles to include at least some measure of incredulity to the outpourings of Kean and Co. when they have clearly been less than truthful in the past.

Get it?

Murphy I think is a good signing - we saw what an older pro can bring in midfield with Gordon Cowans back in 91, he used to run the show.

Best has shown he knows where the onion bag is and should be excited by training with Gomes.

But fully agree that the manager has to be replaced by someone better for any of this to translate into enough points to mount a play-off challenge.

Yes, I agree. Why is Kean still in a job? There must be more to the politics then we are aware of.

I wonder is Singh has been brought in as a compromise within the Venky family. The brothers wanted kean out; the sister wanted to keep him so Singh is employed to watch progress and report back. Hence the comments about evaluation and giving time............

agree about bringing in a proper manager - that would be the best signing of all!

Don't know why everyone is slagging Murphy off as being too old and not fit? he played a stack of games last season in the Prem and 11 games in the Europa cup also. He doesn't have a history of injuries, he has a good motor on him and can control a game. Give the guy a chance!

A player may be free, but his wages aren't. A club has to be run within a budget. I don't know enough about these players, to judge whether they will fit a realistic promotion plan, but I don't feel the club has the resources to pay players who don't contribute to the squad. I wonder about Nuno Gomes at 36, though Graham Alexander kept it going to 40. It is all well and good having experienced players, but they either have to perform or by great advisors and mentors to young players who improve and perform. This relies on enthusiasm and language skills. Lets hope that Nuno has these.

Lets hope that Nuno has these. thresholdweller

I suspect there will be a lot of posturing, gesturing and a lot of hot air coming out of ewood until the window shuts, then and only then will we see the squad we took down has been diluted again with cheaper less effective components. Go on, prove me wrong, I would love it if you did, you haven't done yet. More relegation battles coming up.

Dont think that Best is going to be prolific in the Championship hes been there before and struggled for goals, third choice for me behind Rochina and Goodwille maybe even Slew. Hope we dont sign Nuno Gomes could turn out to be a very expensive mistake, is Kean offering him a 2 year deal as well. lol

Because of what we already know about about Kean's managerial ability and his inability to be realistic and truthful, fans cant be blamed for being sceptical before the season even starts. The players signed and those mentioned dont seem to be to add to a team capable of putting fear into other championship teams. I know people have said Kean needs to get off to a good start winning most points. We know it cant be about winning points or he wouldnt still be our manager. There is another dimension to this problem though. When things arent going well (which they wont at some stage), Kean does not have the capability to manage the situation. His response is to make deluded predictions, start blaming others including the fans, he falls out with players, manipulates the media for sympathy. This behaviour makes an already difficult situation, almost impossible. Add to that the majority of fans resent his every breath in Ewood, he is without doubt the wrong man and I dont feel anything will change that fact.

agree about bringing in a proper manager - that would be the best signing of all!

Don't know why everyone is slagging Murphy off as being too old and not fit? he played a stack of games last season in the Prem and 11 games in the Europa cup also. He doesn't have a history of injuries, he has a good motor on him and can control a game. Give the guy a chance!
could itnot be that hes another yes man just here for his last big pay day or have i missed something
it doesn't matter how much of a yes man he is - he will be a very good player for us this season. And he will still be a good player long after Kean has gone too...And yes you always miss something Benal13.....

Bit surprised Edwards has gone to Rochdale on a 6 month loan, I thought he could have been involved as a squad player, given his potential and issues about our defensive capabilities.

Perhaps we won't be short of defenders after all.

Spot on edmy, will do nothing with Kean in charge. My next visit to Ewood will be to the game following Kean's sacking.
I’ll be the next in the queue behind you at the ticket office; they will not get another penny of mine until he has gone.
For the Kean lovers that have posted on this site recently, it’s not personal it’s the way of the world. If you had an employee who by their actions had cost your company £60m what would you do, If that employee week in week out made decisions that meant that all the hard work the rest of your team put in was ruined by the actions of this one person what would you do, Venkeys gave him a pay rise and pat on the back. He has shown constantly how to grab a defeat from the jaws of victory, if the games had ended after eighty minuets the Rovers would still be in the prem, but his actions and tactical changes though away all the hard work. Just look at the facts and then comment.

me too as reports say he is a very promising young defender....but first team footie for Rochdale is better than playing for our reserves so this will just be part of his footballing education/experience
. Probably a good loan for the club and the player.

If, once again, the players that SK signs do not perform to (our)expectations then he must go. There is a slightly more optimistic air at the moment and with a new MD and a seemingly interested D of F (Shebby Singh) then surely the pressure will mount but if theses new players do succeed we must get behind the club in general. Venkys paying out money,be it in transfer value or wages, could even be the 1st nail in SK's coffin and that can't be a bad thing for any of us.

Well if you have look at as if Rovers were buying Robinson Hoilett and ollson I am sure you would feel that they were going in the correct direction so getting players we have no idea of performance wise instead of our current players is a bit hit and miss but Murphy should prove a good signing like Yakubu did. I am a bit dubious after the failure of Rochina and Petrovic because we may be buying into players based on their reputation from Kean's time in Portugal.
