Blackburn Rovers fight off QPR’s late Murphy bid

BLACKBURN Rovers fought off a last ditch hijack attempt from Premier League QPR to seal the signing of Danny Murphy at the weekend.

The Lancashire Telegraph understands Rangers upped their offer to the former England international at the 11th hour – but Rovers returned with counter terms to secure Murphy's services for the Championship campaign.

Murphy had already turned down offers from QPR and Premier League new boys West Ham United to travel to East Lancashire for talks and a medical on Friday.

And, when QPR’s Malaysian chairman Tony Fernandes sanctioned a last minute second offer to the 35-year-old, his fellow countryman and Rovers new supremo Shebby Singh responded in kind to complete the deal.

It is understood the 35-year-old midfielder put pen to paper on a pre contract deal on Saturday evening, having agreed a two-year contract. It is expected to be confirmed by Rovers today.

Rovers are also chasing Newcastle United duo Leon Best and Dan Gosling – although reports from Australia claiming Harry Kewell, 33, is close to a move to Ewood are understood to be wide of the mark.

The former Leeds and Liverpool midfielder is expected at Brockhall for ‘tests’ today, after quitting Melbourne Victory and returning to England for family reasons, but the Lancashire Telegraph understands any move to Rovers is highly unlikely.

The Lancashire Telegraph also understands Rovers will hold further talks with Newcastle United striker Leon Best later this week, after having a bid in the region of £3million accepted.

The 25-year-old former Southampton and Coventry man is currently mulling over his future having been told by the Magpies he is way down their striking pecking order.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is also believed to have given former Everton midfielder Dan Gosling permission to speak to Rovers about a potential loan deal.

Murphy's capture is the first sign that Rovers owners Venky’s are finally prepared to provide a ‘decent’ budget, with a lucrative package also understood to be on offer to Best.

Rovers have several other targets on their radar, in both midfield and up front, as they look to strengthen their squad to push for an instant Premier League return.

The club are hopeful former defender Colin Hendry will join the coaching staff this week, while further appointments could be made.

Meanwhile it is understood Rovers director Vineeth Rao, a close friend to owners Venky’s, will take a backward step in terms of influence at the club.

It is also believed youth charity ‘The Prince’s Trust’ will continue to have their name splashed on the front of the shirts next season.

If its one consolation im pleased to see The Princes Trust partnership continue. Less surprising is that any business wish to be associated with us at this moment in time.

So we are paying Danny Murphy more to play in the Championship than QPR were prepared to pay him to play in the Premierleague. FLEECED

Obviously no one wants to sponsor Rovers otherwise why else would they keep "The Princes Trust" on their shirts, nothing against the charity but Rovers would obviously prefer someone to be actually giving them some money rather than give it away for free.

However given all the bull Kean has told to the fans who can blame them, we shall see if we get more of the same from Shebby.

Looks like Danny Murphy is your typical money-grabbing scouser - prepared to drop down a division in order to secure the best wages and the longest deal.

I think Danny Murphy will be an excellent player for us, I see him very much like Tugay in his later years - just patrolling that centre circling, getting the ball down & passing it. Pair him up with a Savage type partner who can do more of the headless chicken stuff, and it could be good. All depends if he stay fit, obviously.

I JUST can't get my head round the fact that they let loads of our old experienced but high eaners leave last season (which I can understand the logic of, even if not agree with) to reduce costs. So then why sign someone who is exactly the same as what we let go?

Tell you what Venkys, why didnt you stump up the high salaries LAST year, then we might have stayed up! Clueless springs to mind, but it certainly isn't the first time.

Which is why it is so sad that the only possible decision to bring the majority of Rovers fans back on board under Venky's ownership doesn't seem to be being considered. Under normal circumstances universal praise would be lavished on the owners for a signing of a player like this in the Championship.

Two year contract for a 35 year old Danny Murphy, he will be 37. Alongside a player with legs he could be a real asset for our team. Unfortunately your views are probably correct due to the incompetence of the "manager" he will probably be played as a Left Back...

Murphy is surprisingly an pretty much injury free player....he played in 33 prem games and 11 Europa games last season and not may less the season before. He was team captain and well respected by Fulham fans and helped them into one of their best ever prem finish positions last season. Not sure how any Rovers fans can knock him based on facts. But then when have facts counted for anything on here. Murphy is a good signing. Fact.

I would have thought like this if i was Danny Murphy, that getting paid the same as a preimier league player and getting to play week in week out, compared with a lower salary to be bright on occassionally. any how i thought they were trying to cut the wage bill, even though they got him for free, 2 years is to long, usually player are offered a yearly contract at his age.....

So let me get this out in the open plain and clear, the logic is this, they sold phil jones, what did they get for him...? And who else did they sell last season and what did they get for them, draw a line and then add in the purchases, there is a deficit no? Ok so there is a deficit, so that goes on wages for new players, obviously that money ran out since they tried there best to prevent certain players playing as to cut down paying appearance bonuses, where is the rest of the money, show us the money, where is the money, where is r money (do you like my impression of the one and only Al Murray on the banks...!). Conclusion assets strippers, if at worst trying to squeeze as much money out of a club on a slender budget, which in the long run equals relegation.......

Desperate signing by a desperate club. A 35 year old looking for one last pay off! And he has found some mugs happy to give him a 2 year deal, will Rovers be able to afford to pay him in division 1?. Hope he enjoys kicking a ball in front of 5,000 people. At least by dropping out of the premier league at least the delusional Muppet who calls himself a manager is going to get a LOT less airtime.

After mainly spending your career in top flight football working under managers such as Gerard Houlier, Alan Curbishley, Martin Jol, Roy Hodgson & Mark Hughes. What on earth were you thinking of when you agreed to work under such a spectacular failure as Kean?
Good luck Danny boy, but prepare yourself for a massive culture shock.
