A mass of foul striking and a failed penalty in what was otherwise a dominant Blackburn side still saw the home side lose 2-0 to visiting Newcastle.
With plenty of attempts on goal coming their way Rovers just couldn’t seem to hit the target and despite the Magpies gaining only a few of their own it was just enough to take the Toon home with the win.
First-half despite Rovers’ dominance in attack, the home side just couldn’t seem to keep their shots on target.
With Petrovic making a costly early mistake with a pass, Ryan Taylor’s shot was helped past Robinson with Dann’s attempted clearance deflecting to give Newcastle the opener.
Once again efforts from Hoilett and new boy Anthony Modeste looked to test Newcastle keeper Tim Krul but often sailed wide.
The scores looked to be equalled after Leon Best almost tipped a corner ball into his own net but luckily for him Danny Simpson cleared the header off the line However, fans were calling for a spot-kick after Hoilett was fouled by Coloccini on the edge of the box. With a tussle between the players breaking out referee Phil Dowd stood back before making any decisions.
With tempers calmed, Ryan Taylor earned himself a yellow for a shove on Hoilett whilst Phil Dowd opted to award Rovers a freekick on the edge of the box. The ensuing freekick by Pedersen was quickly deflected by the wall.
Despite their fair chances Rovers still couldn’t pull back the goal before the break.
Even with a late foul on Modeste by Simson earning them a penalty, David Dunn’s shot and Pedersen’s rebound were calmly saved by the concrete Krul.
With the scoreline against them though, Rovers looked to enter the second half with the same energy as the first.
Anthony Modeste once again met disappointment early on after the restart. Breaking down the right, he fired off a long-range effort to catch Krul well off his line. But with the ball slowing as it neared goal another clearance from Simpson once again denied Rovers the goal.
Despite them dominating play however, Blackburn were beginning to look like they were out of ideas as yet more chances fell foul of goal.
Even when Blackburn’s attempts were goal-bound, beating Tim Krul was proving difficult. Scott Dann looked to finally have the equaliser, winning a header from a Pedersen freekick. But even with the ball floating across goal, the Dutchman was there to make the save.
Things just weren’t going Rovers’ way tonight. With substitute Mauro Formica seemingly earning the overdue equaliser with ten minutes to go, the cheering fans swiftly faced disappointment again as the shot hit the side-netting. As play entered injury time Rovers dismal second-half was only made worse, after Gabriel Obertan beat Paul Robinson one-one-one to gain Newcastle a late second goal.
In a game with plenty of chances thrown their way, Rovers’ failure to find the net was their ultimate undoing.

I just hung myself but St Peter wouldn't let me in, he said God had ordered special dispensations for Rovers fans because they have been treated so badly and sent me back down to earth. While I was up there I had a vision and saw the seven horses of the apocolype running down Nuttall Street and there were huge crowds and trumpets were blowing and angels were singing on high and a great cheering went up from all around that could be heard from the four corners of the earth, and it was good, it was very very good. But I'm afraid that was all I saw, I don't know what year it was, or if Rovers had won the Premier League or the Champions League. But everyone was happy and looked well and I would guess that poverty, crime and unemployment had decreased in Blackburn because Rovers were successful again. So keep the faith, Venky's will go, Kean will go, but when, I don't know.

A pathetic display of mis- managed players coupled with bad decision making and team selection, this is now becoming embarassing to the faithfull who spend their hard earned cash each week home and away, I have never experienced anything this bad in all my years, I think it is all over we are not going to survive while we have the same management,It,s like watching school children in the school yard all chasing the same ball, no method. Done is not a proven penalty taker, This new player Modeste had five open chances and could not convert, Dan is a complete waste of time and money, Kean must go !!!!

Couldn't believe it to night had enough chances to win three games .Its the same old we don't have a quality goalscorer up front or a midfield player who can strike the ball from outside the area and hit the ball true. Now I don't want to blame anyone for tonight but for all the chickens in India we must have someone different taking freekicks and corners from time to time during a game other then Gamst

First half we played pretty well, but without the killer punch and second half Kean didn't change it to make us more offensive despite being a goal down. What a bl00dy clueless sap.
*
Dunn has 60 mins of footy in him tops. Hoilett continues to play a team game in solo mode.
*
Sure, Dunn missed the pen, but who else could take it and bear the burden of missing? One of the young lads? No. Petrovic and Nzonzi would have been booed if they had missed. Maybe Pedersen would have been an alternative. Having the balls to take a penalty is half the job.
*
Scott Dann isn't a bad player at all. Modeste couldn't finish today but he did show good touches and speed, but at home a centre-forward needs a partner.
*
You can either have the attitude we were pathetic and hang yourself in a whimper or
you can wait for the Yak's ban to end, play a proper right-back and kick-on.
